I am curious, as I have seen flags in 1990, 2010 and 2023. But what stops us from having a run of success, Geelong could win second flag in 2years, Brisbane could go back to back, have previously won 3 in a row, Hawks 3 in row plus 2008, Richmond won 3 over 4 year period, but we seem to need years before we will win another one. Not a bad year this year but curious as to why we aren't able to just be a really strong side for multiple years?

Pretty fine margins. We were close as anything in 02, 07 (we roll Port), 11 (kind of), 18.
Look back at the first round picks we’ve wasted over the past 10 years - Freeman Scharenberg Stephenson Kennedy Broomhead. Then also on other years we spent our 1st picks on Mclarty and Sier ect.

That’s all down to Hine,unfortunately.I know he has his fans here,but he’s had a lot more misses than hits in the last ten years or so.

2011 and onwards were ****ed due to the nonsensical Malthouse-Buckley ordeal. Bucks wasn’t ready to be head coach but the head honchos got caught up in the romance of it all (like Essendon and Brisbane). Lost key players due to injuries and problems behind the scenes. Dane Swan retiring due to injury minutes into the 2016 season really summed up that period.
2018 was pretty much derailed by injuries. 2024 was completely derailed by injuries. And turns out this year did too … with the whole Bobby ordeal sprinkled on top.

I’m going to say something that will annoy a lot of people but we were lucky to win each of those 3 flags we never had the best side in any of those seasons.
1990 we got lucky with the draw and the Hawks unexpectedly losing to Melbourne. We could never get close to them in that era.
2010 again not the best side and lucky with the draw again. We were a very good side but better in 2011 and we lost so the draw helped us.
2023: well with no key forwards and single digit wins maybe it was luck or a better game plan i think a lot of teams could have won 23.
Apart from 2011 we’ve never really been the dominant team and my opinion is that we’re screwed by three people. Eddie, Buckley and Hine. I personally put most of the blame on Hine. He’s flat out refusal to draft key position players unless they were f/s after Reid and Brown was disgraceful and the misses in top 20 picks were spectacular, as another poster has already stated. Basically he lucked out with Swan but he was almost gone after 2 years and the whole Beams mk2 fiasco has and is still killing us.
We all know the Eddie/Bucks fiasco so I’ll leave it at that.
I’m glad we’ve won 3 in my lifetime but 4 is going to be a long long long way down the road, I hope I’m around to see it.

Jason Cloke was in red hot early career form in 2002. And after Rocca got suspended I don’t think anyone at Collingwood was expecting a victory. We were so reliant on a few and Rocca was our second most important player after Bucks.
Also the BS that is all the advantages the AFL gave the Lions that allowed them to essentially field an all-Australian team.

I don’t know, but I know that winning a flag in itself is extremely difficult and requires so much to go right. It really is a lightning in a bottle sort of thing.
Only a few teams have won back to back in the last thirty years or so. The age of the list of our 2023 premiers was always going to make things difficult, but it can be turned around in no time.
As supporters, we just need to take it one year at a time.

We’ve had decent forwardlines but always lacked the fire power of dynasty teams that’s usually built around a couple of generational players and then filled out by some solid contributors.
Our forward lines always seem “makeshift” or “system focus” to make up for the lack of talent.

It is hard to win flags regularly in this year unless like the Lions you have inherent advantages but we made a prelim. What really stops us though is a lack of talent. We have to set ourselves up better through the draft.
Hope Naicos wins the brownlow for Nick, won't be consolation for us fans or the club though.
TBH I rate the players MVP higher than Charlie, coz it's the players who judge it, not the umpires.

I am not in the right head space to go into excessive detail in terms of answering your question in terms of a lot of depth. However as a supporter who has attended the 1966 GF & 1970 GF & 1973 Preliminary Final (when we were approximately 38 points up at half-time against Richmond but had a 16 year old Rene Kink in his first game as our full-forward) & 1977 (both GF's) & 1979 GF & 1980 GF & 1981 GF & 1990 GF & 2002 GF & 2003 GF & 2010 (both GF's)) & 2011 GF & 2023 GF, I believe have not had high quality or elite key forwards who could consistently kick goals & so exert total scoreboard pressure on our opponents. Apart from Peter McKenna in 1970 (who had kicked 5 goals until half-time but was suffering from concussion in the 2nd half & so ended up with 6 for the game) & Phil Carman in 1977 (but missed both Grand Finals due to suspension) & then Travis Cloke in 2010 & 2011, we have not gone into the finals with competent, if not elite, key forwards either at full-forward and/or centre-half forward. Fortunately in 1990 we had a guy who played with a roving commission across the forward line & kicked 90 odd goals in terms of Peter Daicos. However in 1990 we also had a very useful & promising young centre-half forward in Craig Starcevich (who left the club prematurely). Plus, even in 1988, 1989 & 1990, we could even rely upon an increasingly injured but still productive Brian Taylor to regularly kick goals at full forward. Unfortunately since Travis Cloke left Collingwood at the end of 2016 (en route to a very mediocre single year with the the Bulldogs in 2017), we have not had a reliable quality full-forward and/or centre-half forward. That is a 9 year period & I still yearn for a quality & proven key forward going forward into 2026 & beyond. For far too long over this period we have had to rely upon "journeyman" or makeshift key forwards going into a final series. Alternatively, as was the case in 2025, we have been overly reliant upon players such as Jamie Elliott who have to play well above their height & weight to achieve 30, 40 or 50 plus goals per year. Now maybe I am totally misguided & incorrect & outdated in my analysis in relation to this question. However I would suggest that if you put a Charlie Curnow or a Jeremy Cameron or a Tom Hawkins or a Sam Darcy or even a Jesse Hogan or an Aaron Cadman or a Riley Thilthorpe or an erratic Aaron Naughton or maybe even a Ben King or a Mitch Georgiades or an earlier version of Tom Lynch & or a perhaps a younger version of Josh Kennedy & quite a few others, into our teams since 2017, then I honestly believe that we would have won at least 2 more premierships. I could have provided a lot more to substantiate my claim but I will leave it there for now. Goodnight & good luck.
