I see the CEO will be meeting to discuss amongst other things the proposed salary cap for 2017 or $12.5 mln. This represents an increase of $1.9 mln and I thought it was worth opening up discussions on how it should be spent.

Brackets of Players

1. Looking at close to end of life and not going anywhere
Examples - Petrie, Mitchell, Schofield, Mackenzie, Butler, Priddis, Lecras, etc
Outcome - you are staying on the current as a maximum so nothing needed for you

2. Nic Nat - a category to himself
Already our highest paid star and contracted longer term with a hope but no guarantee that he will return as good as he was pre ACL

3. Established guns to keep and share in the booty
Examples - McGovern, Shuey, Gaff and now add to that Yeo

4. Young Guns we want to extend
Examples: Nelson, Sheed, Barrass, etc
Make sure we use the kitty to retain them long term

Any other ideas?

Also thinking there are a few players that would happily take another $100k this year and forgo it next year so that we use it all this year.

I am sure the AFL will allow greater flexibility in 2017 given how late the CBA is being finalised so that clubs can carry forward some of $1.9 mln to 2018.

Surely every club isnt going to just get an extra 2 million to spend. Would not all players in all clubs just get a set % pay increase across the board.

Absolutely. The average pay per player has to increase (mathematically) but who knows if existing contracts have an adjustment clause. I'd be disappointed with my management team if they didn't have something
You might be able to get away with a bit of extra cap room but most/if not all clubs will have that so it's not necessarily an opportunity in itself.

Clubs would have also been expecting some sort of increase.
The good ones in theory they would have structured contracts in a way to either:
- take advantage and try and sign a marquee free agent or
- retain their own stars (gov is probably one that's currently underpaid on our list relative to his new contract) while giving bigger contracts/backended to others (maybe NN?)
I think Sydney have been banking on this increase to pay the non Buddy Franklin players.

Might see some FA B graders getting a decent pay rise

I damn well hope not. That would almost be called communism or at least socialism.
Nah.

Firstly the Players Association wouldn't allow it. A huge pay increase for some players and none for others? Yeah right.
Secondly Clubs wouldn't want it to happen. Imagine every club with 2mil to throw around at players. Poaching left right and centre.

Not going to happen.

I expect there will be new minimums for 1st and 2nd year players which will be AFL/Player Association/Club agreed.

Apart from that, you telling me Buddy will be getting a 17.9% increase along with everyone else?

Yeah why not.
Or are you saying Buddy should not get a pay rise because he is already getting paid enough, and that his share should go to someone else? Isnt THAT communism? :p

I guess we could use the 1.5 mil on players and the 500k on a FA.

Got some pretty big names coming out of contract next year:
* Jeremy McGovern
* Elliot Yeo
* Luke Shuey
* Andrew Gaff
* Dom Sneed
* Jackson Nelson
Any club that doesn't have a crack at Jeremy McGovern isn't doing it's job properly.

I expect Buddy will be getting his contracted amount and not a cent more. Sydney had already taken into account the likely increase and hence Buddy's premium will be seen as being less of a concern in the later years. This was explained by Lynch on a Fox Footy programme last year and he should know since he was on a similar long term and very high priced deal like Buddy's deal.

I recall the dialogue on on why Gaff was only a short contract extension was that he didn't want to commit without knowing the new CBA. Similar comment on Lever and why he delayed signing.

Given we couldn't afford both Ballantyne and Mitchell last year- I would probably think the increase has come just in time.

Guys like shuey, gaff, yeo & McGovern you would expect would command a larger contract this time around- I don't think anyone would begrudge that. They will certainly be targeted by other clubs.

Our younger Guys like Nelson, Duggan, Sheed, Barrass may also see a sizeable jump in their contracts as well.

Although I would expect a certain percentage to jump in all contracts, the impending retirements of Priddis, Mitchell, Butler (maybe even Lecras & Mackenzie) in the next year or two should see us with a bit of cash to play with. With no restrictions around trading any picks at the moment that could be quite useful if the right option presents.

Maybe not necessarily even WA players either- the recent recruitment of both redden & vardy I think shows we are better at presenting ourselves as a club anyone should look at.

Caroline Wilson wrote that us and Port are the only two clubs that have fixed contracts and will be the biggest beneficiaries to the increase in salary as they aren't fixed percentages.

I skimmed the thread so sorry if this has been said but I have heard that most of the old contracts at all clubs have a clause for the CBA negotiations, which allows the contracted player to get a percentage increase equal to the cap percentage increase.

Essentially all players just had a pay rise confirmed.
