With Sydney the 2012 Premiers, all other clubs will now be looking to deconstruct their success in one way or another, particularly given that they have won the big one against a club that for all intents and purposes had a stronger list and more A graders. To the degree that "clubs win premierships" what can we learn from Sydney as a club in terms of their list management, game plan and culture?

Listen to Lethal talk to the team that won 01-03.

When your ready as a team then be ruthless to win.
Swans had that stomping thing going and the hawks cracked.
Watch at 21 seconds ---> He explains it "pressure the other team into submission" <----

And this one "we think they can bleed"

So boys when your ready bleed maroon.

No secret or new game style. They are simply an honest hard working team that demand a certain level from their players that is non negotiable. They are able to trade in middle of the road type players to come in and perform a certain role in their team and structure to help keep them propped up without needing to do a fully rebuild via the draft.

Whilst people keep talking about going after big name players, i think the success comes from using your top draft picks well, and using the later ones to get in talent from other teams that you identify can help out your own team. None of the players the Swans have traded in are world beaters, they all just do their job.

Sydney played excellent on the weekend, because they were willing to take their chances, and take the game on. I think we need to be patient, like they have, and let a few players like Zorko or Golby develop before we can actually push for the finals again. Also, when we do play, we need to take our chances, and not waste time and chances when we have the football. We need to actually take the game on more often.

Play finals at all costs. No bottom out, drop down for draft pick crap. Finals experience is crucial, you can never say you've had enough.

I always wonder how well we did our trades during premiership days, as we could have ended up with a more consistent elite talent pipe line than what we had in the end. Sydney have a steady flow of talent, but they never rest during draft or trade. It is always about improving the list one way or the other, either pinch fringe players who are lacking opportunity, line up some gaelic talent and on top of all that have a coaching structure to mould them to role players. (Everitt, McGlynn, Morton even, Tommy Walsh last trade period, list goes on)

I am not sure of details around our trades (say a Jude Bolton, Gram etc ) during our premiership days.

I agree and think Richmond are probably the closest team at present in replicating the current Sydney model in terms of list building and identifying and targeting certain players that fill those certain needs. Now in terms of whether or not that works for Richmond is another thing, but I agree, the manner in which Sydney build's and regenerates its list should be followed, which I think we have done in the past. Success in list building is not simply done with just the draft, but a combination of all facets; be it trading, developing international players, drafting and now free agency...Sydney have probably done it better than us in recent times, but it is not something we are completely devoid of either, be it Hanley, Raines, Maguire etc.

We can learn how to use the trade period to pick up players on the outer at other teams, we can learn how to have a strong club culture where players will bleed for the team....... oh wait a minute maybe will can just follow what we did back in the late 90's early 2000's lol.

Sydney's club culture really is something to admire all players seem to buy in to the club ethos and it shows.

Won't be learning much from Sydney if they do indeed offer Tippett close to a million bucks to play for them.

Would that be the extra million they have over and above everyone else. Those were the days.

I can't believe he earns more than half a million myself one of the most overrated players going around. Good on him if he can get it why not.

While in a different code Melbourne Storm have done similar. Put in place a solid structure of play, have a few stars and have recruited cast offs from other clubs to come in and play a role. Has been very successful with a very similar plan.

Voss treats our current team as a rebuilding period, hell he doesn't expect us to make the finals till 2014+... seriously, as a coach you should aim to be the very best every year

What makes you say that? I remember quotes of a different variety regarding this year, and also new standards for next year.

That being the best at hard contested footy is finals footy as we were early 2000's and late 2000's for Geelong and I would imagine most premiership teams. Their model for drafting and trading has already been pointed out but remember Roos stating that first round picks were used on mids and later ones on talls. Culture it must be said is driven by the players not anyone else, it's time for someone else to take the reigns off Brownie and Black and instill that drive and not openly talk about it but just an across the board expectation.

Actually Roos' mantra is 'draft best available, trade for needs'.

I'd also say that culture is instilled mainly by the players, but also by strong leadership by the coaching group. In saying that it feels like the younger group of players has started to take ownership out on the field at least.

What we can learn from Sydney?

A Mardi Gras is a great tourist attraction.
A nice harbour beats a brown river.
Traffic and infrastructure planning is a "nice to have" (hahahahah).

- that you can win a Grand Final without a marquee KPF
- but you do need a winning midfield and an attacking backline

Sydney remind me a lot of the Melbourne Storm .A few stars but the rest being bits and pieces who are brought into a system , given a role and an expectation and thereafter rigidly follow the system and play the role..The team as a whole is greater than the individual parts.Going against the best available theory both teams seem to draft for a specific need.

I'd much rather their harbour to the Brisbane River. :P
