He was the dirtiest coach and under him the Dogs were the dirtiest team. Even Libba the leech was more rabid under Wallace.

Stopping the opposition by whatever means was wallace's forte. I cant believe he didnt tell a couple of our players to walk over to hall and smack him in the head.

Sure it was disappointing to fall apart like that, but watching Hall rough up McGuane really left a bad taste in my mouth. Good luck to the kid for sticking to him, but I dont care how may weeks they get, I just wish Polak, Simmonds and even Richo walked over and collectively smacked Hall up.

Well one difference is that at the Dogs Wallace had players who had it in their nature to go the biff. ATM it would seem only some off the younger guys have that in them.

Which is one of the positives so far. I have observed our runts being roughed up for years, only to become more experienced runts. Would love these kids to maintain their spark.

i agree but the AFL is much more sanitised even from Wallace's period at the dogs. The line is even thinner these days. Plus you need a ringleader like Libba, which is someone who we just don't have atm.

The problem with the three players you mention there is that none of them have ever really had it in em to whack someone properly, so it's unlikely they will start now. Good to see some aggro in the young blokes though, and it is one of the primary reasons that I really like McGuane as a player in our side (and now Connors:D)

What are you talking about Ray Hall?

I think a slight southerly breeze could blow over ray hall.:o

Obviously both of you havnt really watched much of Ray Hall,
as crap as hes been recently he has always flew the flag for the yellow and black on the field.
He apparantly is also richmonds best in the ring according to many people.

Gee they must have some weak fighters down there.

only an idiot would judge someones strength by looking primarily at the size of his arms:rolleyes:

You are right, watch the games Rayzor has played and he is always one of the first in when it gets heated.

I also have heard that he can move around the boxing ring, bear in mind he is a tall lad so he would have a very long duke'ish reach.

Hall has been forced to avoid putting on extra bulk so he can keep up with power forwards on the lead and play on smaller players when necessary - otherwise he'd run like Simmonds and Pattison. But don't mistake a lack of huge biceps for a lack of strength, most forwards that play on him learn that pretty quickly. And yes, he's been far and away the best boxer at the club for half a decade...and personally, I wouldn't like to tangle with Greg Stafford once you'd landed a couple on his beak. ;)

If you look at the games he played last year, you'll see him dive into a pack and come out with a Docker under each arm pulling both of them off a young player, see him rough up Fevola to the point where he refused to shake hands after the match, and countless other examples of Hall's physicality stamped on every game. He's a club leader in hard ball gets and is way ahead of anyone else in his size range. Every time he plays he goes in to bat for his teammates and looks after the younger and smaller players.

Then there's the odd stray elbow and knee you always get from a 100% competitor like Hall...ask James Hird if he'd willingly stand in Hall's way again like he did in 2004 and was helped from the ground with a badly bruised kidney.

He's been limited in the level of 'hurt' he can apply in defense because of the risk of giving away free kicks, plus rule changes which mean that the hit he put on Camporeale in the 2001 semi and knocked him out of the match would now attract a 3-4 week suspension.

Get him out around the ground and he'll run taller opponents off their legs, and naturally impose a level of physical pressure we sadly lack ATM.

While people are hailing McGuane's game on Hall (and I think he did ok considering), they seem to forget 2004 when from more opportunities Barry Hall could only manage 3 goals on a fully fit Ray Hall - one of them from a very questionable free kick. Barry Hall tried to wrestle with him and learnt very quickly he couldn't push him around, while every time he led he wore one around the earhole for his trouble and ended up with with 96kg of knees and elbows landing on him at full pace.

Some forwards will accept that, most will be all too aware that every time they lead there will be a pain factor involved. You can't underestimate that (it causes plenty of missed marking attempts) or many other physical things which don't show up on the stat sheet at the end of a match.

We badly need a hard, physical big man either in defense or around the ground.

Gee you have nfi mate

regardless of what he is or lacks as a footballer (and personally ive always thought he was a dud) one thing he has is mongrel and wiry strength in bucketloads. Id back him in in an onfield fight against most.

I will 100% agree with all of this Razor. One thing Hall does have is hard at it 'all elbows' attack on the ball and will always be there for the young blokes. But you said it yourself...he is now 'hands tied' by the new rules. The powers that be have said to the Ray Halls...stay in the country leagues..we want 'no touch' football!
