When will England regain the Ashes?

It has to happen sooner or later... when will England regain the Ashes?

I think Australia will win again this summer, and England will regain the trophy in the next English series.

I see nothing in the current England side that suggests they will re-claim the Ashes anytime soon.

yea i have no reason not be confident coming into any Ashes Tour for a long time to come.

Obvioubsly they'll get up eventually, but we have such a good junior developement and structure to cricket in Australia, that we are going to continue to improve on the competition until they can set it up the way we have.

I think the next england tour will be the danger one.

Look at the current team - how many do you expect will be on the next England tour?

Waughs - no way
Warne - probably not
McGrath - probably not
Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn - unlikely that they'll all be still there.
Gilchrist - probably, but no certainty
Gillespie - probably not
Lee - probably will be, but that's not necessarily a positive

of the current team, Ponting is the only one I'd be confident of seeing in England in 2005.

That doesn't mean we can't win of course, but it does give the Poms a chance to catch a younger team out on their home turf.

Ponting and Gillespie are 27 and will be 30 in 2005. No reason why they shouldn't be part of the next team to England (injury permitting in the case of the latter).

As for the 30-something Hayden, Langer and Martyn. They took a long time to cement a spot in the side and will probably be trying to hang around as long as they can (a la the Waughs), and form permitting there is every chance they will still be there.

As for McGrath and Warne, well they are probably the most likely to be gone. Hopefully we'll have adequate replacements* by then.

* Or something close to it, since I would rate these two as the best pace and spin bowlers ever to play for Australia

Injury is the reason I don't expect Gillespie to be there.

As far as the others go, the Ashes is still the biggest series for the players. If they play until near that time, there is a chance that they will stay on until the Ashes and retire at the end of the series.

But we'll still have to have some new faces - and with people suggesting another 30-something Lehmann to replace M.Waugh, I hope they start looking for some youngsters soon.

I know that this will sound un-patriotic, but I hope that the Poms win the Ashes sooner, rather than later, because I believe that the Ashes has lost its lustre over the past decade (Australia's won 7 Ashes series in a row), and an England victory would not only be a great result for Cricket development within the U.K, but will help the game internationally.

But, in all seriousness, England wont win this series (but they'll be competitive) but the next series in England should be the Poms best chance of securing the Ashes since 1986/87.

Well people talk about these things happening in cycles & that it will be England's turn soon but to be honest maybe that was the case once but not anymore.
You don't get a top class Test side by luck anymore & the way that Australia has developed it's cricketers over tha last 15 years has been very impressive.

We're just starting to do the same, the people in charge have set themeselves some pretty tough goals, they have a publis statement of being the best in the world in about 5-7 years.

Maybe we'll produce top quality Test cricketers maybe we won't, for me there's no reason why we shouldn't produce some really good fast bowlers, spin's always going to be a problem with the weather & pitch conditions over here.

I doubt we will ever be the no1 cricket nation again but maybe we'll win the Ashes in the next 3 series, our rugby people have put in a good structure & coaching network & it seems to be working & the cricket people seem to be trying a similar thing but I fear that cricket is along way down the road of becoming a minority sport as far as the playing of it is concerned.(I think less people can be ars*d spending a whole day trying to play cricket when there's every chance that it will p*ss down all day & it will be a complete waste of time)

Just remember that in 1989, the touring Australian side was greeted by the English press as the worst Australian side ever. Since then Australia have won 24 test matches to 6.

Just making the point that these things can turn around very unexpectedly and quickly.

Having said that I think Australia will win this summer and win well. The crunch comes for Australia when McGrath and Warne retire.

The England side of 86/87 were greeted in much the same way they were the 'can't bat, can't bowl, can't field side' (so there's hope for Scott Mulle anyway )

I just think now there's less chance of a side suddenly getting it together, it's seems like a lot more planning & hard work are required.

Would it be that sudden though? Hussain seems like a good leader and England were pretty good last northern summer from all accounts. I think they've been improving steadily.

The major worry is the number of players in the English squad who are less than fully fit.

I would have thought the biggest worry for England this summer is finding batsman capable of not only surviving for long periods against the high quality Australian attack but also being able to score quickly.

A close second behind that would be finding some good enough bowlers to bowl out the world class Australian batting line up twice. Surely you cant think a man with a bowling average around 33 (Caddick) is going to do that job???

Unfortunately it is going to happen but I can't see it happening this series. The next series is not until 2005 in England so a few of the current players will be gone and it might be more interesting but who knows that is a long way off.

The only thing about those stats is that Caddick has never played against Australia on Australian wickets so it will be interesting to see how he goes.
