2006- W-13 L-8

St. Kilda 10.12 (72) Melbourne 13.12 (90)Friday, 8 September2006

2006-2007 what happened? From there on why did we land in the shitter? At the end of 2006 we had 0 retirements look at the results in 2007. W-5 L 17 Why did we go from being arguably the best victorian side to rarely ever competitive? between these to years started our slippery slope to where we are now. At the end of 2007 we retired 3 players Byron Pickett, N.Brown and C.Bizzell I can see that could impact the side slightly coming into 2008. What happened to us in these 2 years? They were definitely the stepping stones to the position we are in now. Definitely a big difference between the two, I dont think i've seen any other team crash that hard.

Be interesting to see our win-loss record since that win.

1 finals loss in 2006 (Freo away)

2007: 5 - 17
2008: 3 - 19
2009: 0 - 3

For a grand total of: 8 - 40

Go us. If you include pre-season games, we go to 9-51 or so.

Basically the rate of decline of our stars at the time (Yze, Neitz, White, Carroll (well not a star but very important) was greater than the rate of improvement of our youngsters.

It's fair to say that we haven't had any real superstars in our team for quite a few years (except Neitz in his prime), but we did have a large core of talented senior players. The likes of Neitz, Robertson, White, Yze, Green, Bruce, McDonald, Brown, Whelan, and Bizzell meant that we were a competitive outfit from 2002-2006. Not to mention the likes of Rivers, Davey, McLean and Moloney who were a bit younger.

However, many of them senior players began to fade by 2007, which meant that we were really going to be found out. And we were. Chuck in some injuries to key players, a long-term coach whose message was becoming a bit stale, and a handful of losses by under a goal, and we could only manage 5 wins in 2007.

We all know what happened in 2008, but that's basically how we went from best Victorian team in 2006 to bottom four side in 2007.

That final against the saints was the best footy night of my life.

And to think in round 15 of that year after we beat the tigers i was actually getting a bit bored of us winning so easily all the time, (much like Geelong nowdays) but a week later we came crashing down to earth against Freo at Subi and after that loss i was bitterly dissapointed.

Not to mention loosing to Carlton twice in a year, boy that was a shocking feeling. Makes you think that winning is still what it's all about in footy.

In 2007 people easily expected us to cruise into the Top 4. The season started with a dissapointing loss to the Saints who we beat in the final the previous year, and we never recovered form there. :(
