I found this very interesting as to where we (and other clubs) picked up our young players in the draft. I've omitted players that never made it or are no longer on our list. You can find all this info and more at http://www.afl.com.au/hmd/hmdinfo_14.htm#wce. Anyway, here is a summary:

Drafted Player / Draft / Selection / Club of origin

1995

Chad Morrison / Pre-season / Compensatory selection / Southern U18
Ben Cousins / National / Father-son rule / East Fremantle
Trent Carroll / National / Zone selection / Claremont

1996

David Wirrpunda / Pre-season / Compensatory selection / Eastern U18
Michael Gardiner / National / One / Claremont
Josh Wooden / National / Twenty four / NSW-ACT U18
Michael Braun / National / Fifty three / Bendigo U18

1997

Callum Chambers / National / Thirteen / Gippsland U18
Rowan Jones / National / Twenty eight / Claremont
Andrew Williams / National / Thirty four / Dandenong U18
David Antonowicz / National / Fourty four / Western U18
Phil Read / National / Sixty / East Fremantle

1998

Michael Collica / National / Twenty / East Fremantle
Andrew Embley / National / Fifty seven / Swan Districts
Chad Fletcher / Rookie Elevated / Subiaco

1999

Darren Glass / National / Eleven / Perth
Travis Gaspar / National / Fourteen / South Fremantle
David Haynes / National / Sixteen / Geelong U18
Adam Hunter / National / Twenty nine / Swan Districts
Kane Munro / National / Fourty one / Bendigo U18

2000

Andrew McDougall / National / Five / Perth
Daniel Kerr / National / Eighteen / East Fremantle
Jeremy Humm / National / Thirty six / North Ballarat Rebels
Dean Cox / Rookie Elevated / East Perth
Kasey Green / Rookie Elevated / East Fremantle

Some surprising stuff there. Will comment on a couple of things in the morning.

Couple of steals in there with Braun at 53, Read at 60 and Embly at 57. Pity that Read and Braun have been injured but i still believe that Embly can be a real talent across half forward. I didnt know that Chambers had been around so long, drafted in the same year as Jones, Williams and Read but hasnt played half the games they have.

Thanks for the info Vis.

And he was also selected very high up, so yes, he has been a bit of a disappointment. He is however, starting to improve so maybe he can begin to show us why he was picked up so high.

99 looks a success so far as Glass has certainly shown a bit and Gaspar looks the goods. I think both of them will be regulars by next year with Glass almost a regular already. JUry is still out on Haynes, Hunter and Munro though.

Now have a look at this, it bloody well shocked the bejeezers out of me.

We picked up Brett Heady and Ashley McIntosh for picks number 92 and 112 respectively in the national draft. TALK ABOUT A BARGAIN!!!

Before McDougall, gardy was our only top 10 pick

Whoa!! Quite the bargain, a consistent and at times brilliant half forward in Heady at 92!! And one of the best fullbacks of the last decade at 112!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wish we could pull off a couple of coups like that again this year.

Symmons at 8 though

Fewster at #3 was a huge disappointment and so was Luke Trew (#14) and Craig Smoker (#30) in the 1995 draft. This was not a very good year drafting wise.

1996 was allright though Nick Stone (#39) got delisted last year, or maybe the year before was it?

1997, Jaxon Crabb at #12...deary deary me, what a stuff up that was. Todd Holmes at #37 was also a bit of a failure. Fairly average year.

1998, crap, crap, crap is all i can say. Brandon Hill at #10 never played a game for us. Michael O'Brian at #26, same fate. A lot of other no hopers that year as well. Embley was the only player we drafted who has survived.

1999 looks set to be a very good year. By trading Jason Ball we got draft picks #11 (Darren Glass) and #41 (Kane Munro) and so far that looks a bargain. We got Gaspar at #14 which surprised me a bit and Haynes at #16 because of Fewster going to Freo. Adam Hunter at #29 looks allright to me as well. First year of recruting by KJ.

2000 looks set to be a good one as well despite only taking 3 young players. Kerr is fantastic, Humm looks promising and McDougall is working his way back into form after an injury.

Hopefully, 2001 will also be a good year with plenty of good draft picks. Sydney gave us #11 and #41 for Ball, what would they give us for Banners ya reckon?

Those 3 bad years of trading 96-98 have hurt us badly. But give it 2-3 years our current crop of players who are coming through the ranks will be able to stand up and really shake the 8!
