geez i feel for you blokes.
Even when you know your team isn't going to be particularly strong you can't help but get excited at the start of a new season. To have to cop that from your blokes first up must be tough. Good luck for the year, i hope you come good:thumbsu:

We'll be pushing up the bottom for the season I see, however, after Bails decides 'Stuff it, we are officially rebuilding', the kids after 12 games gelling together will go on to win the last 4 games of the season to take us to 5 wins and out of priority pick territory. (Our first win will come curtesy of our bitches on QB)

It needs to be said...
12 years ago your club voted to merge because it was unable to cope.
MFC has been struggling financially for all that time living off handouts from the AFL (successfully run clubs).
You get rid of the only positive the club has had in all that time, Neil Danaher.
I honestly hope Melbourne FC pulls itself out of the shit, but when does it start? What are the realities? What are the probabilities in Victoria?

Of course Melbourne will come good, but it won't be soon. Many clubs that find themselves in trouble at least have some positives to draw on. Those positives for Melbourne are hard to find currently.

But if you never find a way to force MCC members to take up MFC membership, things won't change quickly.

Perhaps we need to finish dead last for 3+ years, then tank to get good players and then we'll be a good team.

1st round, stranger things have happened.

Even though I don't want to discuss the merger, I will mention this. Our club was financially strong at the time, not "unable to cope" like you suggest. The head honchos thought it would be a terrific opportunity to take over a club and become even stronger. With Melbourne's money and assets, plus Hawthorn's list and facilities, plus AFL incentives, it would've been a super club.

Since then, things have gone down hill off-field, but at the time we were actually doing quite well.

Also, Daniher had 10 seasons at the club. How much longer do we give him without winning a flag? In his first three seasons, we made the PF and GF. But after that, the best we could manage was a couple of SF's and a couple of QF's. We needed a fresh start, and as much as we liked Daniher, it was time to move on. Name me a coach in the modern game that won his first flag after 10 years at the same club?

Nonsense!
Gutnick pored in millions to keep Melbourne afloat.
Just read through your reply and count how many times you made the finals, how many finals games you played and and a Grand final appearance, and excellent coaching record I would have thought considering the back room shennanegans that were going on and that any outsider might have thought was deliberate destabilisation.
Yet Daniher consistently got you to the finals even having to sell games interstate.
He became the marketing and membership face of Melbourne.
There are few clubs that owe so much to one person as Melbourne owes to Daniher.
I think he would have delivered a premiership to you if you had have put a united club behind him, given him modern training facilities and a management that made a profit so he didn't have to be the marketing manager as well.

Mate, they are facts (re: our financial position in 1996). Gutnick promised to pay the club $3m if we didn't merge, not because we were broke. It was from 1997 onwards that we started to lose money.

As far as Daniher goes, we hadn't made the top four since 2000. No use finishing 5-8th every year. As coach, he has to take some responsibility for that. I love him for the efforts he put into the club over 10 years, and I'm sure that he will be honoured by the club in due course, but it was definately time for a change of guard. We're going to have a lot of players retiring/moving on now and in the next couple of years. A whole new coaching department. A new CEO and administrative staff. A new home, new marketing strategies (hopefully), more money being pumped into the football department.

Basically, the club is entering a new era and heading into a new direction. Hanging on to a coach after 10 years would not have been the right move.

0-1-21.

We will have a draw in round 22 V Richmond where Neitz will kick a goal after the siren in his farewell game, and we'll all be in raptures because we didn't experience that losing feeling :D

Surely we can finish above carlton but i can't see us doing much better than that.
Premiers '08!:)
