Graphically a modern PC kicks the rump of any console, mainly because monitors are able to generate far higher resolutions than standard TVs. HDTV will mean improvements in the future, but in the present your standard TV usually produces 640x480. In comparison, the standard PC gaming resolution is 1024x768, and this can be raised on high-end PCs to even double that.

Yes. PCs whip consoles. Only problem is the constant need for upgrading since games are made for a standard speed machine like on consoles.

1. Play over the net.
2. Play against more than 4 players!
3. Use voice comms.
4. Play music when playing games.
5. Get game mods.
Etc, etc, etc...

All consoles are toys. Computers are real machines!

That post is a beautiful example of the ignorance of the general public when it comes to videogames.

1. Xbox has an ethernet port built in. PS2 and Gamecube are releasing add-on broadband and 56k modems soon over here. (PS2 and Xbox are already online in the US.) Mind you, you could play online 3 years ago with the Dreamcast, and to a lesser extent, the Saturn about 5 years before that as well.

2. MotoGP on Xbox Live supports 16 players. Along with a plethora of other games. You really have no idea.

3. The Xbox Live Starter Kit comes with a voice communicator. Depending on the game, you can shut out other users, mask your voice, etc...

4. "Play music when playing games." What exactly does that mean? If you're saying you like to play music other than the music that is in the game, then you're an idiot imo. And besides, certain Xbox games allow you to do that anyway. (it's really only useful with certain racing games)

5. The fact that you can't get mods for console games is one of the beautiful features of them. No bullsh|t. No extra patches to worry about, only to find your PC crashes when you install them. Everyone's on a level playing field. Everybody has the same hardware. No advantages online for those who have $8000 machines playing against those with $500 machines. etc etc etc

Perhaps you'd like to post your thoughts again now that I've fed you a clue or 5.

Of course, I'm not even convinced you were serious with that post as it is so completely inaccurate that I wonder if you haven't been living inside your PC for the past 10 years.

The fact that people can't find new and different ways to breathe life into older console games is good?

The absence of the ability to customise thing with new skins, levels, maps, scenarios etc is good?

The fact that the makers of a game cannot respond to feedback to improve a game after its release is good?

CAN YOU DO ANY OF THIS IN AUSTRALIA???????????? F*CK NO!! AND IT WON'T HAPPEN FOR A LONG TIME!!!!! MORON! Computers you've been able to do that for the last EIGHT or so years!

It's an option you can't do on consoles. Playing music while playing games is a great option. Why wouldn't it be? Thousands of people do it. I always do it. It's not as if you can't hear the games sounds.

ROFL!!! Everyone on the same palying field????? You know why they are on the same playing field?? Because four people are playing on the one console, and on the one TV!! What a joke. Mods don't crash your computer. If they crash on your computer, learn how to use a computer first!! Mods are great. It lets real gamers to design games. Make improvements and fix games. No chance of that on consoles.

Like I said, consoles are toys, computers are machines.

tisk tisk gPhonque,
Calling pc owners ignorant when you so blatantly show your ignorance.

Pot, Kettle, Black.

BTW, I don't believe there are many console games that have the longevity of PC games, such as most action RPG's, but in particular some strategy games like Europa Universalis I & II. PC games rock and the problems you have with PC's (ie. crashes) do not apply to everyone.
Go and learn something about PC's and you might just find that they are great machines...

You really don't know anything about consoles.

Dreamcast has been online for 2 years. (not for much longer though) And around this time next year, Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube will be online.

Oh, and Xbox Live comes with a voice communicator.

Of course us Aussies get these things last, but to say these things can not be done on consoles is just plain incorrect.

It's an option you can't do on consoles. Playing music while playing games is a great option. Why wouldn't it be? Thousands of people do it. I always do it. It's not as if you can't hear the games sounds.

Xbox. Rip tracks off cd's into the hard drive. And if the game supports it (generally racing games, which imo are the only games that really need a custom soundtrack), you simply select your soundtrack.

So again, to say "it's an option you can't do on consoles" is just plain incorrect.

Why are you wasting my time when you don't have any idea what you're talking about?

ROFL!!! Everyone on the same palying field?????

Yes.

You know why they are on the same playing field??

Yes.

Because four people are playing on the one console, and on the one TV!! What a joke.

Online you d|ckhead. No advantages for those with expensive machines. Everybody is on the same playing field.

Of course, a game like MotoGP supports up to 4 player split screen ONLINE against up to another 12 people.

Certainly beats sitting alone at a computer desk with a mouse and keyboard.

Mods don't crash your computer. If they crash on your computer, learn how to use a computer first!! Mods are great. It lets real gamers to design games. Make improvements and fix games. No chance of that on consoles.

Good! I'd much rather play a game the way the devs intended us to play it. I'll admit that this is just a matter of opinion though, and neither you or I are wrong.

Like I said, consoles are toys, computers are machines.

There are some beautiful looking console games these days (ever since the DC....and I doubt you've ever seen a DC running through a VGA monitor....) that stand up to nearly anything a PC can handle, and when you consider the prices of PCs ($2000 for something half decent) VS consoles ($350 for top of the line), PC's really do look like overpriced pieces of sh|t.

i believe his point was that PC's are about 10 years in front of consoles. he never said that these things couldn't be done. seems to me in order to salvage your own bit of credibility you are shoving words down his throat.

and to stick by the delusion that the ability to upgrade games is not an advantage for the PC is plain stubborness.

mods crashing your computer??? well that was the bomb. clearly you are not in a position to evaluate the downfalls of PC's if you dont even know how to operate them.

i believe the true reason you prefer consoles is the ease of operation. PC's sound way out of your league.

Think about it logically ps2, gamecube, x-box wateva they are the 3 most talked about they all have good grapics and a good, and if u can tell grapics apart in any of these then ill be dammed, i got a ps2 an x-box an i cant, imo it all comes down to how u like the controller and what games is on what system you like, about there be ing no good games on x-box thats crap halo, sega gt, nba 2k3, thats just to name a couple, theres hundreds, and with the online gameing everyone is wrong about that, just because live aint out yet you think theres not an online gameing for x-box? offcorse there is www.xbconnect.com all you need is cable an its the exact same as live, so all of use should stop wingen about which is better

This thread should of died along time ago but I think (no offense) you all need to learn some facts. The point of the thread was to figure what the best system was, PC wasn't even included in the poll and it is without doubt the best gaming platform but as far as consoles go Xbox is the best spec wise. PS2 has a larger list of games but the specs don't hold a candle to Xbox's. GC is pretty much worth a **** in a bucket.
PS2 currently leads the market as far as game sales go but Xbox is shipping the most units. GC is a kiddie console with a lousy 3% of the games market braving it.
All you need to do is look at a few websites (offical) check the stats on each system and you'll soon see the Xbox is the leader of the 'next gen' consoles, once again spec wise. It's really clear PS2 sells the most games and there's a simple reason for this; it has more than double the games of Xbox but with some big titles coming in 2003 I think this will change.

Now as far as DC goes, I never owned one but my Jod does and it was well ahead of it's time and a damn fine console.

Now go ahead and flame me all you want but the facts are PC is and always will be the best gaming platform spec, choice and sales wise. Xbox is the best console spec wise, PS2 dominates the console market and I don't even care about GC.
For those who are wondering I own a PC, PS1, Xbox and there's a N64 in a box under a few bricks somewhere.

I currently own a Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube and Playstation 2 (rather regretfully)
Playstation 2 is the most pathetic system for the past 10 or so years. I would rather have a Nintendo 64..

Graphics - Pathetic
Games - Pathetic
Loading - Pathetic
Everything else - Pathetic

I have yet to play 1 game on it which I would give over 3/10. FIfa 2003 is good.. apart from the fact that the best view is the players being little ants.

Nintendo Gamecube might not have a high number of games, but all the games are quality. They put time in there games.. unlike Playstation who release games at will (All of them are stupid, crap, amatuer).

XBox is also cheap aswell. The games are crap, the console is a brick (so is the controller). Goto ur local shop and see the range of XBox games.. its very similar to the Nintendo shelves.

And dont give me this Halo crap.. play Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness or Time Splitters on Gamecube.... they are real games.

And ohh my god Metroid is going to be sick!! (If its 1/2 as good as the SNES one, it will be the best new game)

Rubbish! What exactly makes the PC the best gaming machine?

GC is pretty much worth a **** in a bucket.

That must be why I've been playing Mario and Monkey Ball the past few days and have been having a ball (no pun intended) with them.

And if you're talking about "specs" (which you were), then it should be the PS2 that is worth a **** in a bucket, and not the GC.

PS2 currently leads the market as far as game sales go but Xbox is shipping the most units.

Xbox shipping (I'm assuming you mean "selling") the most units? Where did you pull this from? And which planet are you refering to?

GC is a kiddie console with a lousy 3% of the games market braving it.

Nintendo haven't changed their style since their early arcade games. (in other words, ever.) Most (not all) of their games (I'm talking 1st party Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario, DK etc) have always been set in fantasy worlds, with a "cute" edge. That is Miyamoto's, and Nintendo's, style.

C o l o r does not = KIDDY.

For your information too, Super Mario Sunshine is anything but an easy game. (it's f*cking extremely hard at times actually) You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover when you've got no idea what's hidden within.

All you need to do is look at a few websites (offical) check the stats on each system and you'll soon see the Xbox is the leader of the 'next gen' consoles, once again spec wise.

Thanks for that. Did it take you long to find that out? :p

It's really clear PS2 sells the most games and there's a simple reason for this; it has more than double the games of Xbox

The simple reason is actually the fact that Sony have more than double the amount of consoles in peoples homes than Microsoft and Nintendo do.

Now as far as DC goes, I never owned one but my Jod does and it was well ahead of it's time and a damn fine console.

Ah yes.....the DC that Jod was ready to throw onto the "scrapheap" until I persuaded him not to and pointed him towards the good games....

Now go ahead and flame me all you want but the facts are PC is and always will be the best gaming platform spec, choice and sales wise.

Again, what do you base that on?

For a start, your PC will only be the best if you continually upgrade it. Leave it for two years and you're screwed.

Secondly, you say "choice." Are you saying PCs have the best "choice" of games? Because that is crap. Sure, you get the largest choice of unoriginal first person shooters, RPGs & RTS games, and that's about it.

I bought my Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube for less money than it would cost me to buy a good gaming PC. I'd say I have a far bigger choice of games than any PC owner.

And thirdly, you mention sales. Since PCs are used for countless things other than gaming, then it makes sense that they would sell more, so PC sales numbers are irrelevant when talking about the best gaming machine. As are sales numbers full stop.

Xbox is the best console spec wise, PS2 dominates the console market and I don't even care about GC.

You don't care about Gamecube because you know nothing about it.

For those who are wondering I own a PC, PS1, Xbox and there's a N64 in a box under a few bricks somewhere.

And I own everything ever made apart from a NeoGeo (which I wish I had), an N64 (which I never liked) and a Gameboy Advance (which I haven't got yet.)

For the record, I still say (surprise surprise) that the Dreamcast is the best gaming machine. (that is if we're talking about the quality of games, which is really what we should be discussing.) The 3 current consoles are all fairly even at the moment. Each have their great games. I'm excited about Xbox Live, although at the moment, the Xbox is getting the least amount of my playing time.

Listen gPhonque, Games make up only a small portion of my computer time. The possibilities are almost limitless with PC's. Lately I have been making DVD rips (collection of 20-30 700MB-1200MB movies so far and rising every day) and using guitar programs. Another of my computers is used for digital imaging. There are so many things you can't do on consoles its making my head hurt just thinking about it. PC's are upgradeable and they don't need to be tossed away when they are obsolete.

Back to the topic, gamecube would be the best...;) :)

PC's are a multi-purpose machine. Consoles are made specifically for gaming. If you want the works go with a PC, but if youre after a gaming machine go with a console. That's all you need to know really.

Consoles come alive in multi-player mode when youre up against 2 or 3 of your mates. It isnt the same when youre sitting behind a desk and keyboard.

Back to the topic. Xbox is the best because I own one. I used to be a Nintendo follower but made a heel turn and I'm now on the Microsoft bandwagon. I still have an Atari lieing around somewhere along with the original Nintendo and Nintendo64. I still play Aussie Rules on the original Nintendo which is still the best Aussie Rules game ever released. WWE Attitude,NBA Hangtime and Turok Rage Wars on N64 still get the occasional run.

Not true. If you have a Playstation 1 and I have a Pentium 2, both of which are now outdated, who has a better gaming machine?

Can't I still play all those old games on my PC just like I used to? Can't I go on the Internet and pick up freeware and shareware games without having to pay $20 for a second-hand scratched CD? I don't have to upgrade my PC unless I want to play the absolute latest games, and you can't do that on outdated consoles anyway.

There are two ways to define "best choice". You can define it by total number of games available, or number of decently represented genres. Right?

Both ways, PC wins. Name me a genre, I'll name you at least five decent PC games in that genre.

Well, you'd be wrong. Sorry. PCs have far more games than all of those consoles combined. I'll give you that as a gaming machine, a console is much better value for money, though.

True. There's a general weak correlation between sales numbers and quality, but in this case, they're pretty irrelevant.

Seriously - consoles are good value for money, but they're out of their class when compared to the PC.
It's more powerful, more flexible and much more expensive.

Do you PC users use a control pad thingo, or just the keyboard when playing games?

I had the most fun on my original Sega. I have a PS1, which is cool, but I usually just play football (soccer) games. Never liked N64, because none of their games seemed serious enough. The "kiddy" thing, I guess. Can't comment on the GC or any of the others though. I think it's a shame that the DC didn't succeed.
