Back of the Addy , has raised the name of whitnall as an option for the Cats. Interesting seeing we play them this week.Ive posted at the bottom for our out of Aus boarders. What do we think?

I have no doubt that he would have more footy smarts than KK but could he really return to his best form, would he really increase our ability to kick scores and how much would he cost short and long term?

I think a change may well return him to his best , just this year in the wiz fiz he made Moons look silly , hes got talent. Our game style is similar to how Carlton was playing when he was at his best

If he just kicked the goals that KK misses we would be better of by at least 1 a match. That this would have us in the top4

How much? , thats the kicker , Our first round plus Spriggs and Slade?Who knows? Anyway it would hurt , espp when we see the kid down the track picked with our swapped pick. eg the one used for Gerge given to Melb got them Miller , ouch. Maybe we got the guys already here that just need more time.Whitnall could give them those 3 years.

Overall , it might just depend how far we go and what pick our first round is? No doubt , a fit Whitnall would increse our sides ability and he would like to be on the end of Cool Shannon, Tenace, Ablett, Kelly, Mackie and his experence would be useful.

Big Blue option

Wednesday, July 21
DAVID DAVUTOVIC

IS Lance Whitnall the final piece of Geelong's jigsaw in the hunt for an elusive premiership?
The much-maligned Carlton centre half-forward could be on the market at season's end as Denis Pagan looks to further reinvigorate his list with early draft selections and/or trades.

Whitnall's credentials can't be questioned and neither can his footy smarts, his intelligence making up what he lacks in endurance. . . or does it?

His weight problem, which subsequently affects his fitness and aggravates injuries, remains the big mystery and the primary reason he is even being considered as trade bait.

The other factor is what the Blues would get in return while creating some salary cap relief.

Whitnall shone under the David Parkin regime to be one of the AFL's most feared forwards in 1999 and 2000.

At the height of his eight-year career, Whitnall kicked 70 goals (third in the AFL) and led the league in marks (208) in 2000 to earn All-Australian honours. That was on the back of a 55 goal and 191 mark haul the season prior.

But last year was by far the worst of his career, managing only 11 goals, 179 disposals and 73 marks in 12 games. This year he's improved slightly with 20 goals, 171 touches and 60 marks in 14 appearances.

Whitnall, who turns 25 next month, has attempted to keep his weight in check since '99 by visiting a Camp Eden `fat farm', on the Gold Coast yearly, an idea instigated by the coaching staff at the time.

So is he worth the risk for Geelong? Former teammate Glenn Manton said if there's a club that can transform Whitnall, it's the Cats.

``Whitnall's had difficulty along the way but he's far from a spent force and if (Geelong's fitness and conditioning coach) Loris Bertolacci got hold of him, I believe he could enhance his on-field ability and increase his longevity as a footballer,'' Manton said, who knows Bertolacci from their time at Essendon in the early `90s.

``You have to be very specific with the individual fitness and health maintenance programs and a lot of clubs in the AFL suffer from training people in the (James) Hird mentality and Lance isn't an aerobically based athlete, he's a power athlete and he could really benefit from Loris' increased knowledge and skills.

``Whitnall would benefit from a specified training regime or a program which emphasises his enormous power attribute.''

Parkin said Whitnall had only three or four years of AFL football left in him and would always struggle with his fitness, but would be surprised if Pagan elected to trade him.

``I think Lance is pretty crucial in terms of where Carlton's going and people,'' Parkin said.

``Lance is always going to struggle in terms of his absolute fitness or body shape, I don't think that's ever going to change but he would be a continuing asset and I would be very surprised if Carlton released him.''

Former Geelong defender Tim McGrath, who had numerous duels with Whitnall over six years, drew a parallel with Cameron Ling, who arrived at the Cattery as a `chunky' full-forward.

``You look at Ling when he came to Geelong; he was a chunky forward who was never destined to be a league onballer, but all he's done is transform his diet and work ethic and turned into a gun onballer with a fantastic endurance base who can run with anyone,'' McGrath said.

``Whitnall's obviously getting paid well . . . but whether you're a rookie or a star, you have a duty to put yourself out in the best possible shape you can and I don't thing he's ever done that.''

Flying Start's Ricky Nixon would neither confirm nor deny Geelong's interest in Whitnall, who's contracted to the Blues for another season, but said he has fielded a number of calls.

``A lot of other clubs have inquired about Lance. . . there's 15 other clubs that need a key forward, but Carlton's adamant he'll remain at Optus Oval,'' Nixon said.

The name Brett Sprinks keeps ringing in my ears. Then someone else in the background is yelling Mitchell White.

Forget it, lets keep working with what we have drafted, and see where it takes us.

There is speculation every year regarding Lance, and nothing ever comes of it.

Even at his best Spinks would not have kicked 50-60 goal in a year for WC , not in the same class

White without doubt was a class player and it fair to bring up his name. The difference may be structural ,Whites knee were shot. Has Lance any structural probs? The White thing was why I was so glad to not get Rawlings. Still you must admit KK out Lance pants in its look more dangerous on paper. We would to check him out because he wouldnt play for nicks he would want 400,000+. So on money he might have to be twice as good as KK
I just dont know but with the Cats history of getting names to club I doubt we will have to worry about it

Hoops my man , not stripes but yes it would be less flatering than the all Blue, maybe that would put him under the pump to work harder

he would be another Melbourne living player. Everytime I've been into the Las Vegas room at the casino Whitnall is there playing Blackjack. The guy has a seriuos problem. Wouldn't like him down at catland. His mind would be on other things like card counting.

No not fat Whitnall

He can stay at carlton i would rather have my dog out there he is past his best and he wont get any better.

If geelong trades anything good for him then there criedt as good drafters and bringing up great young talent will be down the thunder box...

Spriggs + 3rd round draft pick for Whitnall?

Ive always thaught highly of Whitnall and no doubt he could be a power forward and play good footy under the Cats reijeme.

I'm not a huge Lance Whitnall fan, but if we could get him for Spriggs and a 3rd rounder (which I highly doubt) it would be worth it.

Had a bit of a read of the 'Blue View's' take on all this. Of course there are the usual types who demand that anything less than a top 3 draft pick or priority pick (not that they can be traded). Fortunately for both Carlton and Geelong, club officials are a little bit more sensible (Hawthorn excepted). However there were those that point out that Lance has done little in four years and that really, there is no overwhelming reason to believe that he will do any better in the future and that in all likelihood, he'll be washed up in 2-4 years. To me that suggests that while he is worth a punt, a change may really do him a world of good, you wouldn't want to trade anything that you might actually miss. To me that spells 2nd round draft pick plus Spriggs, after all, Carlton have a fondness for Geelong rejects.

The way I see it, both players have been proven in the past to play well. No doubt Pagan would be able to ressurect Spriggs career to a extent and the same could be same for whitnall.

Carlton have no players with Spriggs endurance, his kicking might not be up to scratch but he is more useful to clubs than people from Geelong make out.

The only reason he cant a game is because our midfield is young, fit and can actually kick the balls.

Other clubs like Essendon and Carlton dont have that luxury.

I dont think the Blues would want draft picks they would want players from our best 25, so they could imediately get extra depth just like they have Scotland etc. Spriggs and Rooke, Spriggs and Enright , Spriggs and D.Johnson maybe even Wojo ,Spriggs and Slade and they throw in a R2 or R3 pick with Whitnall

How much would we pay him. He would be on heeps at the Blues
but his value would be down on his worth in 99, but any player of his stature gets more money by changing clubs.
I would prefer something like his per an. payment fitting in with what our top 10 get roughly 350-500 but I would give a sign on payment the first year, this would compensate any loss of Blues length of sevice awards that he might be due to get and would hopefully get him across the line to the Cats

Year 1 450,000 + 450,000
Year 2 475,000
Year 3 500,000

This being said , I woul be willing to offer the same or better to Kosinski at the Saints. Now theres a kid with upside.

Not to mention a kid who appears just as injury prone, if not more so, and is an even less chance of coming here.

Yeah hasnt had much luck in the sunburnt Zebra jumper but he also is a natural tall forward. He could play deep as Riewoldt has the last few weeks and be more protected from the bufferting of playing in the ruck and the middle.

Yes , I know very little chance of getting him but I think he is probably going to be 2nd fiddle to Blonde Nick at the Saints. Him coming to Geelong would just intensify the rivalry between the two clubs.

Fantasy recruit ,I guess. I just want to have a guy over 193 in our best 5

No way in hell would we pay that money. He is getting ridiculous money at Carlton, but unless he takes a substantial paydrop or switches to a contract which is heavily performanced base then he will be shown the door at the blues.

I wouldn't pay him more than 350,000, that is the absolute max of his worth. If he doesn't want to play for that sort of money then he doesn't want to resurrect his career and he doesn't want to be part of one the most exciting teams playing at the moment.

Lance's stats today

L.Whitnall 1 3 4 2 2 0 0 0 0 0

One thing you want from an experienced import is leadership qualities. Can't say they're too evident. I would still have him, but his trade value is rapidly dimishing, 3rd round pick at best. Salary would have to be no more than $100,000 and a bonus system that would see him earn maybe another $350,000, should he deliver the goods week in and week out and zilch if he plays like today or is sitting on his ample arse injured.
