I was thinking of all the Aussie players I've seen in the last 20 years & how a great many of them would have walked into the England side-Greg Chapple,Lillee,Thommo,Marsh,AB,Taylor, pretty much the whole of the current side bar Hayden-LOL.
And I just wondered (& I know I'm leaving myself way open to a bagging here)whether there were many(any?) England players that u blokes respected & thought would have been worth a place in the Aussie team.

Anyone who bagged you for saying that doesn't know what theyre on about.

I wouldn't of minded having Gooch, Botham and Gower during the 80's early 90's. Bob Willis during the early 80's would've been handy. Even now Darren Gough would be nice but i dont know who he would replace. If he replaced anyone it would be Gillespie, but then Gillespie probably just as good as Gough.

Botham definitely- the genuine all rounder which we don't really have in the Test team.

I'd take Gillespie over Gough anyday. Gough is a trier but for sheer speed and top order wicket-taking ability Gillespie wins hands down.

I also reckon Atherton might be a chance in our team at the moment, he's the perfect compliment to Slater and when he's not facing McGrath he's a very good player.

David Gower, Graeme Thorpe, Alec Stewart, Robert (Jack) Russell, Mike Atherton, Chris Broad, Ian Botham and Allan Lamb are/were all world class players. It'd be difficult to say who they'd replace out of the current line-up.
Broad was my favorite out of that lot. He could have been a superstar had he not had a very poor disciplinary record which led to frustration from the England selectors and subsequent omission at times. He then went to South Africa with one of the rebel teams which burned a huge hole in the middle of his Test career.

Best Aussie XI since 1985:
Taylor (vc)
Boon
Jones
S.Waugh
Border (c)
Gilchrist (playing solely as a batsman)
Healy (wk)
Warne
McDermott
McGrath
Reid
12 - M.Waugh

Best Pommy XI
Broad
Gooch (c)
Atherton
Gower
Lamb
Stewart (vc, wk)
Botham
Emburey
Gough
Fraser
Tufnell
12 - Thorpe
alternatively remove Broad and replace him with Russell (keeper at 7), moving all those above him up one spot and letting Stewart play solely as a batsman

Of the current crop of English players : Darren Gough is welcome to put on the baggy green anytime.

A great competitor, never gives up, always puts in 100% - and he has ability to match his determination.

cheers

I must say dipper, ive got great admiration for Athers, has copped a barrage over tge years fouyght off a debilitating back injury and still is one of the all time class openers, Botham and Gower from years gone by, and Alec Stewart for his love of the game and his country, always giving 100%

Ian Botham without any doubt. A sensational cricketer who could regularly turn a match by himself, always gave 100% and was willing to try different things. Gough would be the closest to him these days, but he still trails a long way behind in terms of class.

Cheers, ArdenSt
