I think i'm too old for trickatreating. Besides it's a pointless american tradition and i don't conform to american standards (in fact i don't conform at all)
Still if people want to do it's fine by me but if anyone eggs my house i'll be one grumpy LOZ

We've had a few lots of kids round here this evening, and really weren't expecting any. There was a group of six who were all dressed up quite imaginately. I like the fact that they dressed up, and put some effort into it, rather than just coming around expecting lollies. Every kid who came round had a parent or someone waiting at the driveway, which I think is good.

When I was little I always wanted to go trick or treating and wasn't allowed to cos my mother thought it too dangerous. Then the one time she let me, I got turned away because I was an Aussie kid, not an American.

But I'm not bitter about it, not at all.

*grumble grumble*
 
Is it just me, or are Aussie kids getting into Halloween and dressing up more imaginatively than ever this year? We've never had more than one group of kids around before, this year, we've had 5 groups. The last one was three boys about 9 or 10, dressed as witches, but they'd put a lot of work into their costumes and were cackling like witches. Heh, no kid has ever come here dressed up before. It must be fun.

They don't come to my place either, I wonder if having Kenny loose in the front yard on Halloween has anything to do with it.:D

I hadn't thought of that. You're totally right mantis, if I had kids there is no way in hell I'd let them wander the streets at night (especially yung'uns).

I came here to bitch about American traditions overtaking ours. Why can't we have our own culture without following the Americans on everything?

It's bad enough when people wanna have Maccas instead of Fish and Chips or kids dressing like South Central LA gangsta's.

BTW: When the did the lolly shop at the cinema become known as a 'candy bar'. Ugh. :(
 
It could be a bit terrifying for old people to have a gang of youngsters banging on the door at night, demanding stuff. I don't think there is a place for Halloween in this country, and in these times when crimes against the elderly and against unprotected children is so much more prevalent. It sends out the wrong messages.

NEW TRADITION

Interesting that some people report a rise in Halloween activity here in Australia this year when after the events of last month Halloween in America is expected to be a rather muted affair.

I agree we need our own tradition. Why don't we take a leaf from Sydney's book, get all the wee kiddies dressed up in heels, giant glittering frocks and headpieces and call it the Mini Gras!!

Just as scary as ghosts and goblins, no? :D

When I lived in Canada for a year (I was 11 years old), I went trick or treating with my younger sister and my cousins. It was a huge event over there - the streets were "abuzz". I dressed up as a skeleton, my sister went as a ghost (we had to do the traditional thing, as we'd never done it before), and my cousins went as ET and Strawberry Shortcake, respectively. We got so much stuff - it was great! Even our mothers dressed up (as babies). I've never done it here though, and I've never had anyone come to my place trick or treating. I actually quite like the tradition - it promotes 'neighbourliness' (I've probably just made up a word! :D )
 
Never gone trick or treating and I doubt that I'll be starting from next year. It's not even our tradition - we're just trying to cash in on America's idea. Although in 10-20 years time I wouldn't be suprised if it is a lot bigger. I don't think it's a very safe thing to do - I heard that angry residents threw flour/baking soda over little kids and screamed 'ANTHRAX!' when they trick or treated at their homes.
