Clear to most i would say that pyke and drex cant both play in the same side

So in the short team who gets the spot first? Drex holds or pyke is back now and takes over?

Derrickx for me at the moment. I think he's played pretty well since Pyke's been injured and Pyke must play his way back in. On the strength of tonight's performance Derrickx keeps his job, for now.

It is no coincidence that after being smashed in hit outs for 6 weeks we won 38 to 36 last night with Pyke back. Sure Pyke looked rusty with skills first run but we know he can deliver. I just dont understand the love for DRex. Ground level effort does not compensate for inability to win tap outs or make it to contests around the ground. Maric was off the chain in the first half last night. When Pyke spent more time on ball in second half Maric was nullified.

For me derickx. Yer he's not as good, but he's got a tremendous work ethic and does not stop trying. He tackles and busts packs.

Pyke doesn't seem capable of running a game out and he's not marking the ball like he used to. If pyke can lift his contested marking again, he then gets the spot as he can push forward and be a strong marking target. At the moment he doesn't seem capable to do that.

As spiffy as derickx can be, he has improved out of this world from his debut, he is our number 1 ruck at the MOMENT

Being at the ground it felt like we were monstered early. The stats didn't bear that out though. And I felt we owned them late in quarters and ended up drawing for the night.

I put it down to the strength of our backline putting doubts in the Richmond minds and they started going wide from bounces/stoppages looking for targets which saw massive uncontested numbers but ironically seemed to dry up Richmond's clean clearances.

We are a sharking midfield missing our two best mdfeilders right now. Pretty simple. We were always going to struggle a bit more without silver service from the ruckmen.

Pyke or drex? Meh. Happy to go with both until Tippett is back but then one must go. Let form over the next fortnight decide it.

I'm all for giving Pyke another week to get back into form. Whether that's alongside Derickzzzx or not probably depends on Tippetts fitness.

Pyke must play he is our best ruckman by a mile and one of the best marks in the competition. Has to be selected every week no exceptions in my opinion unless injured or being rested.

I believe we are a superior team when we only play one ruckman however Pyke needs more help than Reid and Tippett would provide to be in peak form come finals. For that reason Drex should play most weeks and and rested when we play running teams like Port Adelaide. If he can continue to improve he will win a finals spot alongside Pyke but fall away and we will go with just the one ruckman come finals IMO.

Pretty harsh but for me I thought Drex has started to fade a touch and may lose his spot the next few weeks if Pykey & Tippett can both get fit and rolling along. While I think we all looked a bit slow & sloppy out of the blocks yesterday, Drex looked completely gone against Maric early IMO. Not what you want from your uninjured currently first choice ruckman. Further, given Pykeys absence and the fact it was his first game back I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and back him in to get rolling by finals and again become our first choice ruckman.

At the moment DRex is still our first choice ruckman based on the fact Pykey is underdone more-so than Drex 'out rucking' Pykey. I think Pykey's ceiling is higher and come finals I don't want any potential liabilities or obvious weaknesses. Plus I'd like to give Pykey every chance to fight back the spot. So while he's given us some great service this year, and it would be a shame (ala Benny alst year) for him to make it through the year only to miss out on potentially playing finals, I think if push came to shove I'd have to back in the Canadian over Drex to lift and take back the role in the next week or two.

Borgan voted for neither - just thinking about Nankervis or Mitchell "competing" against Mumford gave me a chuckle

Agreed.

When he can get near that is. Both Ruckmen were led around the ground by Maric like sheepdogs. At the moment Drex should be in in front of Pyke based purely and simply on effort with either Tippett or Reid supporting.

I would vote neither for either as a first ruck, Pyke is a better second ruck than Derickx , neither are the ideal first ruck. I like the club playing two rucks but they aren't the right two. also the club has said they don't want to play Tippett in the ruck at all. Its not a simple decision as posters on here seem to think.

Hitouts Maric 17. 6% to advantage Hampson 17. 24% to advantage Derickx 20. 10% to advantage Pyke 18. 17% to advantage

But yes youre right around the ground Hampson doubled both their disposals and Maric doubled both their disposals combined.

Pyke will get better with game time, for now Derickx is doing his job. It's certainly not the perfect ruck set-up and I'm not sure how it'll work come finals time but this was always going to be the year we missed Mummy the most until the young rucks developed a bit more.

I keep hoping a journo would ask this question every week! but instead they ask ******ed questions at the post game conferences.

RW i share your concerns about finals but we have beaten every top 4 side and won 8 in a row with Derickx, Pyke improved as the game went on and some of his taps in the last quarter were very influential.

We know there is no way we can play Derickx/Pyke and Tippett in the same side so one of them will go out and we could find out as soon as this week, i also think we are overthinking the ruck situation at the moment.

We are awesome all over the ground and could possibly win a flag as we stand but the ruck situation is our weakest link so I don't think its over thinking at all.

Don't know what Horse was thinking bringing in 2 ruckman on the back of 2x 6 day breaks and missing one of our best midfielder.

I guess he was thinking pyke has shown he can play forward in a tippett spot

Then started him ruck... But i guess given injuries was hard to drop one and hard to expect pyke to ruck fully first game back

Pykes first half was borderline pathetic but he was crucial in the last

I think unless we only have 22 fit players then pick one and thats pyke

But drex has shown he is a handy back up

Having said all that pyke needs to do more, his mistakes are glaring at times, if we could upgrade on both of these guys in the offseason that would be good
