It's bound to happen eventually, so which band do you think will be first?

My vote goes to Powderfinger. It just seems inevitable for them, where as Daniel Johns' weirdness might prevent a Silverchair comeback.

edit: I should point out that I don't want either to come back.

Powderfinger, after fanning realises his solo stuff doesn't sell and he needs to put on a scarf and impress the masses.

Johns couldn't give two shits about the adoration, fanning could. Thus, blanderfinger will be haunting us for years to come.

Yeh but Powderfinger are bland, generic and I actually find Bernard Fanning much more pretentious than Daniel Johns..

Ambition far outweighs ability when it comes to Johns, and he makes himself look like a tosser because of it. Even if they were a bit bland and samey, at least Powderfinger never seemed to try and be something they're not.

"Wish You Well" was the most popular and played song in the country in 2005, and the album it came from sold over 350,000 copies (5x Platinum in Australia). If Fanning can reproduce something like that (not saying I liked any of it), his solo career will probably be a pretty big success.

true, but his next album is the clincher for his solo career as it is a true "solo career" album, his follow up and really his most important album.

will be interesting if he does powdyfingy covers as part of his solo career or tries to distance completely from them.

I guess that's probably where we differ.

I don't have a lot of respect for Powderfinger because of their inability to create something substantial. They've got a few decent tunes but nothing that really captures the imagination and therefore I find them impossible to rate.

I'm not a huge Silverchair fan by any stretch but they had many more moments of brilliance (IMO). Emotion Sickness, Israel's Son, Across The Night etc were all completely different songs that showcased Daniel Johns as a songwriter.

His biggest problem as you mentioned was that he wanted to be bigger than his capabilities and their songwriting never quite matured to the extent that he would have liked. As a result they've always been inconsistent and their albums were never really complete bodies of work.

powderfinger.

get the impression the silverchair guys aren't all that interested in the limelight. that tends to happen with people who get in from their mid teens.

whereas the finger boys... when they realise without each other they are nothing, they'll come on back.

both bands have their moments. not lots of them. but a few. despite being depressing as all **** these days is a cracker tune.

Rarely do my musical prayers get answered but please god don't let either of these bands ever reunite.

I'll be a good boy I promise.

Yea true, this next solo album is probably make-or-break for him, but I'd imagine he'd still have a fair few carryover bandwagoners from his Powderfinger days and those who bought his last solo album as well. It'd have to be supremely dire for it not to be at least a modest success.

All fair points. I think maybe Powderfinger's lack of musical ambition or difference just made them the less annoying of the two bands to me. I get what you mean though about not respecting them because they've never tried to make anything substantial.

I suppose Daniel Johns does deserve some credit for at least having the ambition to try and go above and beyond what his band was initially, even if the execution was poor. There was a point though where Silverchair's music just began sounding embarassingly overblown (hints of it came on Neon Ballroom, it was in full swing by Diorama, and continued on Young Modern), and their songwriting simply couldn't keep up. The way the music media in this country unquestionably lapped it up for so long and radio championed it so strongly sickened me. All that being said though, I don't think Neon Ballroom is too bad an album, as it strikes the balance well between the harder edge of their earlier work and the more grandiose pomposity that followed.

There's a pretty diverse bunch of people here on BigFooty, but seemingly everyone here is unanimous in their dislike for both Powderfinger and Silverchair. It really makes me wonder who it is out there that actually does like them wholeheartedly, to get them to the extent where they've become two of the biggest bands in the country in the last 15 years or so?

Was a fan of Silverchair back in the day...Neon Ballroom was the last album i enjoyed, just lost me after that.

Also didnt mind Powderfinger (wasnt going to rush out and buy their albums...but much more tolerable then alot of music)

Can see Powderfinger making a come back, can see daniel johns doing heaps of other things, but probably not Silverchair

Yeh good post Damon.

I think you'll find when bands put an album out, there is generally a thread on that particular album.

The last Silverchair album had one I think and you generally get a fair few responses. I'd say the majority are older Silverchair (And Powderfinger) fans who want to critique the album, plus a few admonishing them.

Was surprised that at this point I am the only one that thinks Silverchair will be the one to reform. I just think the hiatus statement sounded like 'shits not working so we are off to do our own thing' so there is far more chance of them getting back together for an album/tour in the foreseeable future than Powderfinger.

I think Silverchair will release another album over the next 5 years or at least try to.

Note take none of this as an admission that I want a Silverchair comeback
