In a few years time the back-line will look something like this:

B: Heath Shaw - Nathan Brown - Nick Maxwell
HB: Ben Johnson - ?????????? - Harry O'Brien

Now who in your mind will fill the important position of Centre-half-back?

Pick from the options below, and explain your reason why?

John Anthony, Ben Reid, Scott Reed, Tyson Goldsack, Tobias Thoolen and Chris Dawes.

For me its: Tyson Goldsack. I’m optimistic he will add on a few more kg’s, and that most clubs these days have only one “gorilla back-man” - and for us, that’s Nathan Brown.

Hence this is my Back-line:

B: Heath Shaw - Nathan Brown - Nick Maxwell
HB: Ben Johnson - Tyson Goldsack - Harry O'Brien

Ben Reid as he has the height and pace to pretty much shut anyone down. These days backs swap so I think it is more a case of who are our two 'big' backmen. Down forward we still have Travis, Rusling, Dawes, Rocca as tall targets and Reid gets the yips in front of goals.

I see Reid a bit like Ashely McIntosh from the Weagles era.

preferably someone with pace.

goldsack or reid looks good.
wont be dawes.
jack is a great footballer but i think he is great for our forward line.
has a beautiful kick and great attack on the ball so could play both really.

Wait to after the Draft;)

ben johnson won't be anywhere near the backline in a few years just really quickly.
i think benny reid is being groomed for it, and jack anthony is a backman make no mistake about it. if he ends up playing a full career in the forward it will be because we are blessed with young KPP's.

Shaw, Brown, Anthony
Goldsack, Reid, Harry O

throw in clarke and maybe even daisy for the quick forward lines, and maxwell first off the bench. backline looks great. and dave i'll be gutted if we draft trengrove above the best available mid. great backlines start as no name backlines, and dominate through midfield pressure, plenty of the "great" cats backline would be good average players in sides with terrible midfields.
we need swift, blease or maybe sidebottom.

Just a question. Do you think you'll regret trading pick 14 for Wood last year when that pick could've got you guys Alex Rance?

Considering Warnock went for a 2nd rounder, imo you guys over-payed massively.

Trengove you reckon Dave or Post.
Well I was thinking of Post here more then Trengrove, If we draft Trengrove I won't be surprised if would start in the VFL and That goes for whoever draft him.

Post(If we draft him) would be more what I was thinking about because he is 19 and would have a More Ready Body he could go straight into the AFL at CHF.

From our list at the Moment I would say Anthony but I would not be Suprised by Years end Thoolen could be the CHB:thumbsu:

Firstly, Warnock went for more than a second rounder and if he'd have agreed to join Melbourne, he would have gone for at least Pick 19.

Secondly, Wood can play. He had one shocker in his last game against the Bummers, but otherwise was at worst serviceable. Hopefully he is on the same off-season training regime as Thomas and Pendlebury, because if he gets really fit, then he will push to taking at least 50% ruck time this coming year, and he wins shitloads of taps relative to his game time.

He was always going to take time, and we definitely didn't overpay for him.

Comparing what we paid for Wood and what Carlton paid for Warnock isn't as clear cut as it seems.

Different year, different draft.

I still see Jack Anthony as our CHB in coming years.

He was just filling a hole this year on the forward line, and will play at CHB for most of his career, with the versatility to go forward of he isnt needed in the backline.

Don't think Reid will ever have the body to play back, reckon he is still a viable option as Trav's right hand man on the Half Forward line.

Very Well Put Before Wood we only had a Injured-Plague Fraser, Bryan and Richards. That would be just about the Worse Set of Ruckman in the League. So we had to get Wood in.

Wood is Mobile,Great Tap Work, Take Contested Marks and Use the Ball well. Has the Tools to be 1 of the Best Ruckman in the League in 3 Years Time.

Plus who said we would use Pick 14 on Rance if we kept it, Rance would of been a Good Pick for us and Would be the CHF for this year if we drafted him but We could of also picked Tarrant or Taylor of the Back Postion. Could of Gone Mid and Gotten Ward,Grimes,Maric or Selwood or We could of Gone Ruck and Picked Lobbe or Simpson.

Plus Wood was in Contract and Warnock was out of Contract

We would have taken Grimes.. no loss

We took the inside mid we wanted with our second round pick (McCarthy) and he is a gun at 18 who has already played finals.. got both the Ruckman and the midfielder we wanted

Thank you for your concern

I'm with Heritier on the drafting of Trengove or Post, as I would be disappointed if we overlooked the talented mids that would be available at #11 and instead went for a KPP.

I understand the merit in drafting best available, but this year I think we really need to take our current needs into account. Granted, we need to find another key position defender but not nearly as much as we need to improve our midfield. As Heritier said, depth and excellence in the midfield will result in our backline being a lot less exposed.

As for who will join Nathan Brown in being the other half of our KPP duo, at this stage I'd say we'll experiment with Reid and failing that Anthony may be the next in line. I'm not confident on Goldsack's ability to bulk up, but even then he is a tenacious and versatile player who might be wasted in a key position spot.

Regardless of whether we find a likely candidate this year or not, times have changed in football and it's no longer a necessity to have two big bodied KPP defenders if you can get your structure right. We have the likes of Maxwell, O'Brien, Goldsack and Anthony in the future who can all contribute to locking down the bigger forwards with a little assistance from our other defenders.

With that said, I'd be more comfortable if we did have a viable FB/CHB option emerge sooner rather than later -- but I just think our midfield should be the onus heading into this year's draft.

It's not Just Best Avaliable - KPB is a Need for us and Trengrove could fill that Whole

I believe I touched on that and explained why I still felt we should go for a midfielder with our first pick.

Depends where the club thinks we're at and how confident they are of Reid or Anthony filling this void. No doubt we'll look at drafting a potential KPB as an insurance policy; but whether they're comfortable doing this with our first pick only time will tell.

True with Hine anything can happen on Draft Day

The best CHB since Jakovic has been Chad Cornes IMHO. His role, if not his position, was re-done in 2008 by Luke Hodge, Norm Smith medallist in that role. Clarkson present in both scenarios.

Do we have anyone to play this role? Are we playing our defence in positions relevant to the late 20th century, or are we ready to switch to the modern version?

Pendlebury, maybe.

Well when it comes to overpaying..............................

It is a known fact that when Wood arrived he was horribly unfit, threw up at the first training session. Club knew he would need two preseasons to get to our required fitness base (Brisbane had a power focus, we have endurance).

Those who watch games would have seen a kid that when he got his hand to the ball directed it well and when forward could take a very strong pack mark, something not many can do these days. Plenty to work with, it is not like we gave him a 5 year deal or anything stupid like that.

Ben Johnson is no longer in our best 22 let alone starting.

Heath Shaw needs to play in the midfield as does Didak.

Reid is the one I would play at CHB, Anthony is far too good in the forward line to change him and he is not tall enough to be a key position back.

My back 6.

Goldsack N Brown M Clarke
H O'Brien B Reid N Maxwell

Pendles is far too soft. Has no defensive skills.
