will be an interesting choice once the curtain is drawn on this seasons horror show. Surely Johno will hand the baton (No.17) on to one of the up and comers.

My early nominations are

Foley (2007 B&F) Captain
Newman VC
Bowden DVC

Young Foley has really shown the way with the improvement in his game. In fact if more of his young mates had improved at the same rate, Im damn certain we wouldnt be singing the blues right now anchored to the bottom of the table. Lets see if he runs out the full season..If so then throw him No 17

I think a captain needs to have played at least close to 100 games.
Foley with not even thirty will need a couple of more years under his belt.
Cogs if he can get back to fitness would be the best case scenario.

That is the problem with our playing list- the lack of players between 25-30

If it were for next season - Chris Newman or Troy Simmonds
If it were for the future (2009 - 2011) Maybe Coughlan (depending..), Newman, Simmonds.

Deledio, Foley etc are too young.

I completly agree.

Chris Newman is a fantastic player, he has heart, puts his body on the line every week and he actually wants to play for Richmond, not for his pay check, he would make the perfect captain.

I don't think sugar will give it up at the end of this yr because realistically I don't think anyone else is ready, I would have said cogs if he didn't do his knee. However Newman, if anyone would have to be the one looking into the future.

Looking at it based on players that will be here when the club is a success again I would go with:
Captain - Newman 25 years old 100 gamer someone that would lead by example respected by the group and has shown that he bleeds for the club

Vice Captains(2) - Coughlan again 25 respected by all the players and again a guy that would lead by example as well as being inspirational.
Polak this may shock some of you but I reckon he would thrive if given the resposibilty of being a leader at the club.

Deputy Vice Captains (2) - Deledio get him in the leadership group and again give the kid some responsibilty perhaps this is what he needs to bring out the best in him.
Foley another kid who at just 22 is still learning but has shown he is there when it matters and gives nothing less than 100% every week.

If I was to replace Johnson this year I'd go with Simmonds. On field he has prescence, and the captaincy might give him that extra spring in his step.

Personally I think Johnson will keep the job. Let Coughlan have a pressure-free year to get back to playing. Let Foley consolidate. Let Deledio and Raines gain some more experience.

If Coughlan can get back to his best (doubtful) then he could captain in 2009 with Foley, Deledio and Raines as deputies.

I just hope we avoid the 6-headed captaincy. I suppose it would have removed most of this debate if we'd have had Bowden, Johnson, Richardson and Brown as co-captains. No one would have zeroed in on Johnson.

We would still have the same lack of leadership - but somehow some would think things were different
