"Three days before Saturday’s must-win clash with the Crows, they find themselves leaderless, with the preferred candidate unsure if he wants to take the position.

Both Connolly and CEO Cameron Schwab talked to assistant coach Mark Harvey on Tuesday night about taking the reins for the remainder of the season, but the long-time Essendon assistant and premiership hero has deferred a decision on the position".

:thumbsd: Not a good look Harvs. You either want a senior coaching position or you don't...

It's very difficult to understand Harvey's position. There's no way Connolly's resignation could have come as a surprise. At the very least he's had weeks to consider what he would do if Connolly did resign.

What else was he planning to do for the rest of the year apart from coaching? Go on an extended fishing trip?

This looks for all the world like someone who's too timid to grab an opportunity to strut his stuff. He doesn't have to commit himself to anything long term. I've heard stories about Harvey dithering about a senior position in the past.

NOt only that but he was the assistant and now the club has turned to him yet he's not sure whether he's prepared to help out!

This is rather pathetic on his part IMO.

Its all about the Bombers boys. Sheedy looks gone, Harvs was the right hand man for years. It very well looks like he may have to choose between you guys and us, if you were Harvey who would you choose?

It kind of looks that way. But would you really want him if he was reluctant to step up to the senior job with us? If he is scared to move from assistant to start calling the shots at a club with only a slim chance of finals would he be really any good at Essendon or anywhere else? I'm not saying he is scared, I think this is just a slip of the tongue from Schwab and we are reading too much into it. Well i'm hoping...

Hypothetically:

If Harvey steps in and wins say 5 out of 7 games, he becomes a really good senior coaching prospect for Freo, but also for Melbourne & Essendon (maybe Carlton & roos as well). His stocks would soar.

If Harvey wins say 2 out of 7 then his career at senior level will really hang in the balance. Maybe some people would say he can't cut it at the top level, so all the doors that may have opened for him would close.

But that is the risk. Life is full of risks. YOU HAVE TO STEP UP.

Surely the Essendon board are intelligent enough to consider the circumstances of Harvey's appointment. It is a huge risk but he should come away with a say 3 or so wins from 7 and still look OK. Not that bad really and basically on par with the Dockers so far in 07. He's not being asked to sign a three year deal, so I can't see how it would seriously jeapardise his chance at Essendon.

On a more general note. There is so much 'behind the scenes' that Harvey has to consider. Number one is the relationship he has with the players as a group and with key individuals. They are going to need to be able to play for him or, given the mood the team are going to be in, they aren't going to win a game from here on in. I for one am hoping he takes it with both hands. I'm just busting to see how he goes.

There is seven games left he could lose all of them and still look good.To me it's what he is doing with the team, how they are playing, who's in who's out etc...He can't just think seven weeks he has to look at next year too.I'm sure they will discuss the strategy from here on not just "here it's all yours"

It doesnt look good when the assistant coach takes 48 hours to decide if he wants to be head coach.

He would be getting assurances off the Board that He would have their backup to get the dog to wag the tail .

Both Bell and Pavlich, in their defence, have been consistently high performers under Connolly, but it is also fair to say that the Dockers' senior players generally wield a remarkable amount of political power for a group of such modest achievements. A former staffer at the club noted a couple of weeks ago that "the tail had started to wag the dog again".

Selection will be interesting the next few weeks.

Just a question on selection?

With a Harvey taking 48 hours to decide that still leaves him another 24 hours from when the team list is meant to be handed in for this weeks game against Adelaide.

Who will be picking the side if he hasnt made up his mind?

Thats a very good point, someone has to put the sheet in by tonight. Since it is a Saturday game they cant have an extended interchange. Lets hope Harvey states that he either wants the job or not by midday today. I am off the idea of him coaching us so i hope he comes out and says he doesnt want it.

Can't say I'm overly excited about Harvs either.

They were reporting on Sunrise that Harvs has accepted the caretaker position. Any confirmation of this elsewhere?

The Freo vacancy is the plum job at the moment but it does come with a lot of pressure and Harvey is aware of it. I think he'll take the caretakers role even reluctantly.

Why hasn't there been an announcement yet? We have a game to play in TWO DAYS.

If Harvey isn't interested, then stuff him. Start showing some enthusiasm for the job Harvey, or close the door on your way out.

If I'd been dating someone for the best part of two years, and then asked the lucky woman* to marry me and she said I need 48 hours, I'd be a worried man.

I think this shows Harvey to be as dumb as he sounds. He didn't have Plan B in place in case CC bit the dust. What the hell was he thinking?

* I know, I know. You buggers are all going to ask how many blind, deaf, patron saints of kindness and tolerance are out there.

I have said all along that Harvey would not put his hand up for any head coaching job.I do not think he has enough confidence in his own ability to do the job.He had the chance to take the Dockers job when it was up for grabs last time but withdrew his application. An assistant for life.
I for one am not convinced he is the man for the job.

Exactly. It's not like it's a hard decision to be the caretaker coach, is it? No one goes around saying 'Ben Allan is the worst coach in history. He has a 2-13 record' do they? Harvey can only improve his position by taking on the caretaker role.

I remember him saying when he first came to Freo like - 'just because I'm an assistant doesn't necessary mean I want to be a senior coach.' Well, maybe the pressure is too much for him. Maybe he prefers to shy away from the limelight, poor thing.

Bring on Chris Bond!:thumbsu:

Carlton seem pretty keen about Voss coaching?

How bout you lot. Would you take him?

BTW, for any mods, this is a ligit question, I just don't wanna start a thread about it.

I'm 50/50 on Vossy. If he had done the apprenteschip he would be my number one choice, but i think we need more of a safe bet kinda guy at the moment rather than take a huge gamble.

Can't really get much worse though?
