It shits me to tears.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the win just like everyone else but it's a point i've been wanting to bring up. Whenever we have the momentum etc we seem to kinda relax and allow teams to get back in the game... Carlton couldn't hit a tree and we would have paid dearly in the 2nd half if they had the forward line/skills. Against North we also let them back when we could have reallllyyy demolished them.

Is it our lack of forward power? I know I was raging for a bit in the second qtr cause we could do no wrong instead we decide to kick it back and play safe footy.. we obviously have the talent but why can't we just play a consistent 4qtr effort?

We seem to have wins yes but I just think soo many of our losses could have been avoided if we didn't just try tackle the bullshit out of the opposition and keep the ball off them.

I don't know what you want, but when we beat a team who has beaten last year's premiers by quite a few, I really start to shake my head. You want more? Find a brothel, or a rub n tug shop? Other than that, enjoy the win or find another way home????? Demolition jobs happen in one-sided affairs. Cartlon are not that kind of side IMO....

Really. So you didn't get annoyed when Swans coughed up a 30 point lead to Richmond because they tried to play safe footy instead of attacking footy?!

So what if they beat last years premiers. They've also lost to shit sides. I'm not saying I want more I'm questioning why we can't keep surging forward instead of kicking back and relaxing.

You're beginning to sound like our PM

Smith and the McVeigh's injuries clearly took their toll in the fourth quarter. A few players were struggling to run out the game

Richmond game.

We have a game style that relies on intensity and a certain amount of physical recklessness. It's hard to do, and carries a significant risk of injury.

When we've clearly got the game in the bag, it's natural to back off a bit.

Even today, when we were moving the ball very efficiently, we're still not the Bulldogs or anything.

Vonn is on the money for mine. Today we are 52 points up and they start chipping it around and over using the ball. When we were hot we kicked it quickly and to a running forward and the Carlton backs crapped themselves. When we kicked the first 2 goals of the last quarter we seemed to shut up shop. By the way we were only 2 down for the last 15 minutes when Mcveigh went off and Carlton was one down in the second half.

I kno that but I can't help but feel the fact we tried to defend our lead rather then attack had something to do with it.

I agree with Von! We get complacent, like we're trying to start the warm down early or something!

Today I wanted to see us keep pushing! Stop the chipping around crap, it can very, very easily backfire, espcially against talented teams.

The Richmond game IMO is a terrible example. We were never the better team on the day, and deserved to lose the game. I was sitting next to another Swans fan at the game and when we hit 33 points up we both agreed that we were not the better side so far, and would not be surprised if we lost.

... We were 33 points up you don't just fluke 5 goals... Maybe they were better towards the end but it was anyones game....

yeah! screw the team for not beating them by 60+!!! with a forward line plucked out of a brown paper bag, injuries to two key players in the 2nd half and 3 or 4 of our best 22 still injured.

outrageous!

We do demolish teams albeit teams in the bottom 4 and usually at the SCG, keep in mind tho this Carlton side at the same point last year beat us by 11 goals so today to win was pretty massive.

Without taking too much away from your performance today (and you were excellent by the way), the reason you initially had such great control was because Carlton did nothing about your run across half back. This was only rectified from the second half onwards when our forwards became much more accountable and our midfield chose to support their defence (instead of blindly running forward), which in turn generated some run and culminated in the occasional attack.

Your defence simply paid no respect to our forward line at the beginning (and personally I don't blame it either given the quality we have in this area) and were also given too much freedom which allowed players to be hit lace out.

Add to the fact that Goodes had no opponent in the first quarter while playing in the centre and the game was over after 30 minutes.

Unfortunately what should have been a close encounter turned out to be a walkover courtesy of some poor pre-match tactics from the Carlton box.

Good luck for the rest of the season; you will smash Melbourne this weekend I am sure of it.

Exactly. indieswans commented in the gameday thread something along the lines of 'We've won. Every time they kick a goal we reply so we're fine.' In fact Carlton had kicked the last three, and only 2 goals in a row (I believe) from Meredith steadied the ship for us. A few times players were running forward, marking the ball, and then put on the brakes and let their opponent catch up and man the mark - why not keep running and bang it into the 50?

Mattner did it on one occasion; he marked, stopped, turned, kicked it side ways and turned it over. I mean WTF?

Bloody right.

This is a team cobbled together due to injuries. Shaw stepped up today after a few ordinary weeks. LRT has been tremendous recently - then he's out.

We're in Melbourne with Victorian umpires against a desperate Carlton team with Gouger Judd and a pretty good list.

But a 39 point win is not good enough.

Sadly I agree slightly with Vonn, we do try to play this "safe" footy from time to time and are no friggen good at it, it always gets turned over... I didnt see the Swans game on TV (Watching from Bigpong as we speak) but come on some of you it must annoy when we are 30pts in front then we do kick to kick and then one player sprays it and the opposition player spoils it and then run onto an easy goal.

It was how I was shown to play footy, wasnt even how I was shown in the Vic Country Juniors...

But saying that Carlton are a strong side but at the moment they're just not blending together well, but still when you have Judd in your side there is not much chance of a big thrashing... Hell I dont even think the big sides have thrashed Carlton this year.

I'm not just talking about this game.

We did it against North to. We've been guilt of it a few times.

Oh stop exaggerating. We were one man down in smith and they were too. Mcveigh went off during the last qtr with ten to go.

I said nothing about injuries? We were on top and got lazy. We have done it so Many times. And clearly our team was playing great and on top. Does no one else realize that if Carlton had a decent forward line and could kick properly, they had all the momentum and god knows what could have happened.

This isn't necessarily about winning by a shitload, it's about not letting our opponent back into the game.
