Brownlow Medallist
This season has been a hard slog. We've been decimated by injuries. We've had heaps of fresh and enthusiastic faces in the team but their young bodies are tiring. We've lost four games in the last couple of months - three of them to likely finals opponents.
Things aren't looking too good at Pieland.
But we're still in it. We still have a chance. Anything is possible.
If we're going to succeed, we really need to turn it around - who is going to drive that? Who is going to rev our team to get the best out of themselves? Who is going to unite us? Who is going to put the fire in the belly?
Swanny? God knows I love Swanny, but he's not an inspirational leader of men.
Harry? He can try and make people see the stars - but not sure that others can relate to him though.
Pendles? Mr Mecurial, sure. Leads by example? Yes. But fire in the belly? No.
Buckley, N? He's probably been in the player's ears all season. Not sure he can take it to another level to rev the players up for the finals.
Daisy? He's a follower (and a good one), not a leader.
Shaw? He could give it a crack, but not sure how seriously others would take him.
Ball? Yeah, he could do it, but it doesn't help that he's on the sidelines.
Maxwell? Bingo! He is the only one who is capable of revving this team up at the moment. He knows what it takes to win a Premiership. He's a straight talker, no nonsence, fire in the belly kind of a bloke. He knows how to inspire. He knows how to wield a stick and when to use it. He knows how to communicate with the players. He knows how to get in their heads. He can manage upward (to the coaches) and downward (to the players). That's what the team needs right now. Sure, that's expected of the Captain. But he really is the right man for the job at the moment.
Given where the team is sitting right now, Nick Maxwell is the most important person at the club.
