He better know something we don't. Ray seems to me to be a pointless pickup. He's shown very little and at the present moment you wouldn't believe he would add much to the side. Having finished top four, why would Ross think that Farren Ray will improve the list. As I said, hopefully he's right and knows something that the general observer doesn't.

someone with a name like Farren Ray should not be allowed on a football field.

Farren Ray will complement Fiona very nicely. Perhaps we can call them the two FiE FiE's.................

Unhappy supporter........:thumbsd:

Farren Ray is the next Aaron Fiora. High draft pick from another club, outside ball carrier, very little contested possession, average skills. We could've got something decent with pick 31 considering how deep this draft goes. Disgrace

Read my post on the Farren Ray thread (in fact, why did you start another thread for this?). You can't compare the "wasted potential" of a 27 year old with the (admittedly somewhat) luke-warm career of a 22 year old. Farren Ray still has 8 years to prove his potential. Fiora has one year and contract, and were he to pick up 80 possessions a game, he would still have failed to live up to his potential.

Here we go again, I'm so sick of bandwagonning saints supporters, bagging the crap out of whipping boys (Apparently Farren Ray has taken over from Fiora). How about we at least see the bloke play a few games for our club, before making rash judgements. If you look at someone like Raph Clarke, who played an AWESOME finals series, its easy to forget that they do have talent.

Signed Sealed Saint, the only thing that is a disgrace is your attitude to our footy club

I am very very confident that in 12 months time this trade will be looking very nicely.

And i'll be sure to bump this comment at such a time ;)

We're probs not the best people to ask, I really don't know too much about him.

I imagine he'll play on the wing, or running off half back, which is Ross Lyon's words himself. He's an outside player with a bit of pace, which is what we need to be honest, so hopefully we can see him sprinting down the wing and hitting Roo on the chest a few (or a lot) of times in 09!

Ray is a midfielder/ back flanker. It's what we need...more depth and pace in the middle, and can be put on half back to release Goddard, Gram, Fisher etc...
Good depth player in an area we need a bit more depth in. He's no superstar but a handy pickup for structure and our gameplan.

I'm pretty dissapointed in the attitude of some of our supporters. Ray has pace and we don't need another inside mid. If Dal is copping the hard tag, Ray has the speed to clear the ball from stoppages. For what it cost us it's a brilliant deal.

On AFL.com, Rossco says he'll be used off the half-back flank to free up Goddard, Gram and the like. I'm going to wait to see him in the Saints jumper and play a few games before I jump to conclusions. Maybe a change in scenery could make his potential into reality, instead of becoming another Fiona.

i 100% agree with that.... why bag a player who hasnt had a real chance to shine?? nor a chance at our club yet? he brings everything forward to our club that we need and have asked for... a pacey midfielder, a fill in hbf and a load of depth where we need it

if dal gets the heavy tag he can run off and if he gets the heavy tag dal can shine

I agree with most of that, except him getting a heavy tag. Unless he has a stellar season, he won't get the number one tagger.

All good points. Lets play nicely BUT HE'S STILL CRAP!@!!!!!!

Can't imagine him getting a hard tag???!!! What's that about?

if we use him to expose the opposition and dals looking flat from heavy tags you can almost garentee he will get a heavy tag... just needs to average 20+ possesions for the first 3-4 games

not a hard task if hes playing through the midfield...

Guys you're bagging me because i doubt the ability of Ray.. The bloke's an outside receiver who can't kick for shit, that's like having a slow, ball butchering Montagna. What is the point of recruiting this bloke?

I can understand why some posters are disappointed in the Ray recruitment.
As an U18 player he showed a lot of pace and fitted very much into the recruiting purview of the Dogs. Whem he was recruited at #4 I was surprised and made comment that he was a bit of a "downhill skier".

To compare him to Aaron Fiora is fair, but he is better than Fiora (2008comparison)

To be honest - I was mightily disappointed about the recruitment of Clinton Jones - who when he was first recruited seemed to be a speedy sqib with no skills. Now I have to admit he is one of my more favoured players. He shows courage, determination and a dogged need to prove himself one of our elite tacklers. I wish we had more players like him.

Just maybe I am getting my wish. In a team not known for its tackling pressure, Farren has twice the average number of tackles as Fiora. In fact if you look at the stats - Ray's show a remarkable resemblance to Jones

(Comparison with Jones)

I have decided to wait and see, but I am hopeful that with two Clinton Jones's in our team we will only get better :)

Give him a chance at least, he's only 22. How are his skills? We need some players with excellent foot passing. If we can pick up Cousins as well we'll have improved our mid-field & half-back depth significantly. I hope draft pick 13 is a KPP though.

If we can end up with 2 mids (Ray and Cousins) a KPP at pick 13 (rough, mckernan, trengove) and maybe young mids with picks 47 and 48. It's alot easier to get gun mids from the high picks, than gun KPP's. Apart from Sammy Fish I can't think of a KPP we've got from a high pick. Maybe Goose, but that was still a pick in the 30's... And Chips could essentially be a mid anyway. :p

Look at Steven, young mid, looks like he has quite a career ahead of him, all from pick 42 or something.

And try a KPP at our round 5 or 6 pick, just for the sake of it.

My problem with the trade was not so much that we got Ray (who I don't really rate, but am confident he's got a lot of improvement left in him) but with the fact we now have just one pick in the top 40. I would have liked to see us be the ones trading fringe players for second and third round picks, rather than trading for them, because we don't seem to have a lot of real quality youngsters coming through.

But anyway, too early to make a defnitive call about the trade at this stage, let's at least wait until he's played a game for us.

I hope these draft picks occur for us.
13: KPP.
47 & 48: Young flankers or wings
63: Cousins!
The others: Depth

Max - pick 15 (next 5 picks Steinfort, Warfe, Bennett, Tuckey, Dent)
Goose - pick 21 (next 5 picks Seaby, Chucky, Steve Johnson, Rogers, Davidson).
Gilbo - pick 33 (next 5 picks Spangher, Owen, J Edwards, J Anthony, Casserley).
Blake - pick 24 (next 5 picks B Johnson - not Brad!, Ackland, Guerra, Hunter & Chapman - handy last two!).

And Sam F and Raph who were both forwards when he came to the club.
