I hate to break up all the wonderful Fred vs Mary threads and polls with a football strategy question but can anyone explain to me why the **** TW flooded for 2 quarters against Brisbane? I had been very pleased with our development in an open football style and seen considerable improvement and whammo we come out and super flood all of a sudden! In the second half when the crisis response sent us back to man to man we win the half? Obviously I am missing something here....please help

Too scared to lose. Like playing for a draw in cricket. TW knew that we probably only have about three games for the rest of the year where we are a 40-60 chance of winning. This was one of them.
Didn't want to get blown away by Brown and Lions midfield early. Wanted to be in touch at half time or at least not out of the contest and then was prepared to take a smaller risk in trying to win the game when he needed to.

And this is how we want to grow and develop going forward? We need to get some balls and back ourselves and our strategy, not shrink into trying to win a game tol get the monkey off. Play like losers ...you can only lose.

Don't take my word for it TT. It's just my answer to your question. My answer is just one scenario as to why we played that way. It might be way off the mark.
Just a question though. What would have happened had we been 10 goals down at half time? I'm tipping Geelong revisited, although nowhere near the same scale. But I wouldn't have discounted an 80-point loss.
In my opinion, that would have done more to retart the development of our list than a half of flooding.

wallace need to do whatever it takes to win, thats what all teams do. it is rubbish to think that anyone gets anything out of the open game.

lost a bit of confidence in master terry have we?

plan was simple, dont get smashed by charman in the middle and choke up brown at all costs

keep it tight until the end and then break it open when the young brisbane players start to choke up

took until wednesday to realise this lol

Yes I have lost a lill confidence in him as a result. I dont see WTF we had to lose that isnt already lost and therefore what was to gain by that crap. No it didnt take until Wednesday but somedays you just kinda lose faith in the point of creating threads here these days.

He outcoached a premiership coach. Isnt that good enough for you?

Also points out TW has no confidence or faith in his defenders actually holding or beating their direct opponent.

haha you still think that?

it was basically a copy book of what sheeds did 3 weeks ago to brisbane, "very innovative" that terry!

chuck a fit chris johnson and luke power in that game and im telling you the lead would not of just been 15 points to brisbane but much much more and i doubt we would of got the draw

Same reason we employ 'tempo football' - a shortage of hardened players fit enough to run out an entire match at full steam.

Even Foley (clearly our leading possession winner) is not fully senior football match fit. He's averaging 25 a game and gets 16-17 of them (sometimes more) in a half, then can't quite sustain the same level of effort. A year or two from now he'll be over 30 every game and may well push 40 some days.

Our senior running players have never quite got there either. We don't have a West/Harvey type who can run all day and pick up possessions through sheer hard running.

Wallace has little choice but to either flood or play 'keepings off' for 1/2-1/3rd of a game, or we'll get massacred in the last third of a match. It would take the youngsters a fortnight to fully recover from a full-on attacking gameplan, soft tissue injuries are entirely likely, and they're going to be well below being able to put in their best at training.

Like it or not, our current 22 requires a strategy where we sit on the ropes for part of a match and try to avoid getting hurt on the scoreboard. The sooner we get games into kids without flogging them too hard, and get another couple of pre-seasons under their belts, the sooner we'll be able to employ a fast, hard running gameplan for far more of a match.

yeh but flooding the brisbane backline and then trying to play run and carry all game isnt what your talking about right?

we are fit enough, just not good enough!

Hey people step back and smell the roses, no one could fault our endeavour except for the pussies game.

Our skill level is shite, untill our players can hit a target with both hand and foot the flood will reapear.

brisbane were slightly better at hitting targets, but we were fitter, soory about thedraw but everything else is irrelevant untill our BASIC football skills improve.

how else can you explain tha gaspar (cant kick, cant handball cant mark) was an automatic selection.

our hand and footskill have ben crap for years, and so have we.

get some people that know how to kick , handball and we will again rise

:):thumbsu:

Our flooding isn't a full on hard running style where we attack hard and then run the length of the ground quickly on fastbreaks PLSC, it's a keeping players permanently behind the ball then chip slowly forward style - big difference in fitness required.

I understand why we did it, just not why we chose last week as the first time all bloody year to do it.

It's not the first time TT, I actually thought the Essendon game was worse - because Sheedy matched us every step of the way - and other games this year we've often done it for periods.

The skill levels from both sides on the weekend just made it just all the more obvious...it was an ugly game by anyone's definition...even when it became man on man 'attempt to attack' football.
