Why the nickname "Buddy"?

Might be a dumb question but where did the nickname buddy come from?

It was done so jealous opposition supporters can think they're really clever and witty and call him 'Duddy'....

Yep, his dad is also named Lance Franklin.

Although "Sonny" or "Junior" may have been more appropriate.
