I think it sounds like reasonable management; as a rookie, he won't play ones.

Allow him to become acclimatised in stages, with a visit home never more than two weeks away.

Do this for the first year, no harm done; second year, he should feel more comfortable, but without the helplessness and trauma of full-blown culture shock

While the news itself is worrying, the fact that we are willing to let him do this shows we are committed to getting him through it. As Eldo said, this will hopefully get him, and his family through the first couple of years and get him to a stage where he and his family move to Melbourne permanently.

I don't think he will, but he's the kind of player who could quite conceivably fit right in at VFL Level for our side right away, given his foot and evasive skills, and his mature age body. And from then, AFL selection is only a step away.

A lot of people here are pointing at Amos's half a reserve game as a reason he won't make the step up to AFL level.
That's a pretty strange assumption to make, especially considering the logistics of where he's come from and how even getting to play SANFL is such a long shot for a guy from the Pitjantjatjara lands.

The thing is, he's been watched by out recruiting people for sometime(and other clubs), because the belief is that he is a freak talent that would step into AFL level quite well if given the opportunity and also surrounded by the right mentoring and support systems.

To put it simply, he's only played a game of SANFL because of just how remote his homeland is, and the boundaries his people and those from such remote areas face, rather than it being any specific indication of his talent levels.

Watch him go in 2012.

This kind of news is not encouraging.
Are you doubting Hawthorn's ability to nurture new players? Have Hawthorn gone wrong in this category since the Kennett reign?

btw don't mention Peterson and Hooper as that was their own doing, not Hawthorn's.

The Hawthorn Football Club must have enormous faith in Amos, his ability, and his dedication, otherwise they would never have drafted him, and allowed the liberties they have. I think we have something very special to look forward. We have taken the gamble before with players who may not adopt to Melbourne, - Buddy and Cyril - when other clubs passed them by for that very reason. I would say they are pretty good players, and could very well play their entire careers with the Hawks.
Let's wait and see what magic Amos might have in store for us.

The idea of him going back every so often isn't that bad of an idea. He won't play for Hawthorn in 2012 and BHH have 4 byes in their 2012 season with there being no more than 7 games in a row before their next bye. So essentially Amos can go home regularly and essentially only miss 3-4 games for BHH which isn't unheard of anyways for the young players.

From the photo's and videos Hawker08 posted it looks like what he needs most is strength and conditioning training, and lots of it. He was dropping back very quickly during the running and he looks like he hasn't done much or any weight training. skinny legs, no muscle definition and plenty of belly fat.

Coming from that far back he won't be able to complete as much training as the other players. And from personal experience can say that he may get through the sessions but will hurt like hell the next day and a few more after. Taking time off will help with the DOMS and homesickness and allow him to get the most of himself.

I'm not convinced he'll have much impact, but how many rookies do. He seems like a natural footballer with plenty of skill and pace if he can get his endurance and strength to AFL levels he could make it. But at 23, speaking little English, a young family interstate, adjusting to city life and not having the training background that TAC players have it seems improbable. The Hawks must have seen something mighty impressive watching him play and interviewing him to believe he can do it.

This is a common misconception RE Cyril, he was boarding at Scotch college in Melbourne I think it was from around 14 years of age. So he had already handled moving from home. Whilst a cousin who moved with him returned home within a matter of weeks.

No doubt it will be a tough task for him to adapt to the busy lifestyle of melbourne, however i dont think this will effect his footy ability. some people seem to be forgetting that the great Isaac Smith only played a handful of VFL games before being drafted... So just because Amos hasn't played much SAFL doesn't really matter imo, footy is footy.

I think it may well have been mentioned before, but just to reiterate Amos is far from fit. Anyone who saw the SC photos would agree that he has major work ahead of him to be VFL standard let alone up to a standard for the big smoke. Seems as though he had the potential, but really it is dependent on his desire to reach these goals. My gut feel is that he is over the moon to have reached an AFL list and this may well be the be all and end all. I will hopefully be proven wrong but the family, and remoteness of his life for those first 22 years don't exactly hold you in good stead.
Will very much enjoy it if he remains on the HFC list for 2013. Good luck Amos

I have faith that the club is looking mid-long term with this chap & are not expecting him to be playing seniors this (next) year. I have absolutely no idea at all, but I hope the club is able to manage his expectations with regard to what lies ahead for him. I don't doubt the club can get him into peak fitness; I just hope he doesn't think a few laps of the park will see him in line for a game & to that end, the club is able to set realistic & achievable goals for him without he getting frustrated or losing interest.

Like I said, I have no info to the contrary, I just hope that he doesn't expect senior games in 2012.

Yeah, the issue was actually moving away from Melbourne, apparently his Sydney and Adelaide interviews were quite bad.
