hes still got plenty of time on his side

however i am baffled to see him playing all these AFL games when the last time he played VFL he got absolutely destroyed by big thommo

Rodney Eade was asked about Williams in an interview last night. He said that Williams suffers a bit from too high expectations and maybe the club made a mistake by pumping him up publically too much in recent years. Eade said that Williams is extremely hard on himself and sets a very high bar for his performances and as such his confidence can go down at times.

He was still extremely bullish about Williams though and like all of us are saying, said that he will improve with every extra game he plays.

He wasn't great yesterday, and the way he uses his body in marking contests needs some work, but he has only played 31 games so far. He has been on our list a fair while so people forget how few games he has played.

His upside is massive if we can develop him into a good player who can hold down the CHB position. Yes, he is learning on the job a bit and will make mistakes, but I am prepared to take that risk in the pursuit of developing KPP's. IMO he is a better long term option than continually playing undersized players in that key position.

if u believe this mate ur more deluded than scott clayton and tom williams
he's a hack always has been always will be..period.

I read somewhere that Nathan Thompson made some comments about Williams when he played on him in the VFL does anyone know what he said?

IMO i think we had hopes he would be the key position savior because of being taken at 6 in the draft, he will never be a gun, but he could develop into a good player, in any case it is very handy having another tall down back who can play on the power forwards, god knows we need any height that we can get!

You are one sad supporter:(

I don't think this qualifies as support. I think this type of person is a detractor. :thumbsd:

He has only played 31 games Booma. If he could hold down CHB for us for a number of years, he will be worth his weight in gold.

Each to their opinion. You think he is a hack, I think he will turn out to be a very good defender for us. I hope I am right :)

I hope you guys with all the optimism are right but just at the moment I'm struggling to see any real development in his game. His last game was inept; he's lost in a contest in the air and can't put body pressure on an opponent with any ability. Further, for all his so-called athleticism, he often appears very clumsy.
There are few alternatives so we may have to give him until season ends and hope for improvement. By then we should know if the constantly used word potential has any substance.

Get off the kids back, there are plenty of others you could criticise particulary those that have played 100+ games and are still failing us.
Of course he gets lost, as hes spent most of his time at the dogs in the medical room, rather than out on the park.
Hes yet to complete a preseason and/or h and a season so he hasnt had the consistency required to develop.
Dont forget hes played 31 games, look back at several players (lake, cooney, gilbee, hargrave etc) at the same time of their careers. Remember lake conceding bags of goals and looking stupid? Now hes our most important kpd.
At worst williams takes a tall, releasing lake, morris and hargrave, making them more effective. What other 6'6'', athletic defenders do we have? Would u prefer Cam Wight?
Physically he can match it with the best (Franklin, Reiwoldt) just giv him a full pre/h and a season to develop his game and build confidence.
It wouldnt hurt his development to throw him forward or as a mobile ruck either...

It wouldnt hurt his development to give him some games at Willi early next season to refine his game and get his confidence up, IMO.

His confidence might be helped by going back to Willi, but his development will be helped a lot more by playing in the AFL IMO. He will get to play on much better players in the seniors and under high intensity pressure and frenetic speed which wouldn't be the same as in the VFL.His learning curve would be steeper playing on AFL CHF's than CHF's in the VFL.

I guess it also depends on his pysche. I would prefer him to play in the seniors personally, but you wouldn't want to batter his confidence too much either. You would have to know his personality to be able to make a judgement call on that.

just a realist mate, not an optimist, but u can dream

But do you concede that if he could become a good CHB and hold down that key defender post for many years and allow us to not have to use undersized defenders, then it is worth the risk?

You have to give him a bit of time Booma. He has only played 31 games. It is unrealistic to expect players with such few games to not make mistakes and to have learnt everything. He is still learning.

mate i would love for u to be right and me wrong but i just cant see it happening. for a club with supposed "depth" and playing him because he is 6"6' is a blight on eade and the club. how do u get a game when all u can do is put one hand up to spoil? i'm not saying that wight should be there instead (god forbid) but to me he is inept with no brain or awareness for this game. he is a rugby player and that won't cut in in the AFL. good luck Karmichael Hunt, another clayton pathetic pick.
i dont blame tommy, i blame clayton. he is the biggest overated scout of all time. but i will stand to be corrected, and i'll have sore legs by the end of it........................................................................................

I disagree with you here Booma. We are playing him because

a)He has talent and potential
b)He is the prototype CHB
c)We are getting games into him so he can be a great defender
d)He isn't playing too badly all things considered
e)There is no one better who can play a tall half back.

I acknowledge that in some respects he is learning on the job, so to a degree I can understand frustration with some supporters.

But for me, it is important to be thinking long term. Premierships are built around great spine. We have Lake who is a gun FB. If we can get games into Williams and can turn into a good defender who can play on the gun CHF's then our spine is half complete. Then all we need is for 2 of Cordy, Grant, Jones and Boumann to turn into good KPP's and our the base for a premiership side is there.

There is nothing to stop Tommy being to us what Matthew Egan was to Geelong before he got injured. Tommy just needs games into him, experience and confidence and I have confidence he will become a great CHB.

He is so important to our structure going forward. If he was 5:10 in height then I wouldn't care so much about whether we play him or not. But being the size and shape he is, I am just really keen for him to develop, more than most players.

Hard to define realist.

Is an optimist's pessimist just a realist or is it a pessimist's optimist that is the realist.

The only true realist is looking back ward because when you look forward it is all a dream whether positive or negative and the only thing real has already occurred.

Philosophy - something worth thinking about.

Williams is obviously a shit defender. That has been shown against the Weagles and even against Fremantle while on Kepler Bradley. In my opinion, it's either Williams has a change of position to move up forward or we can use him to get a draft pick from Hawthorn or something.

Yeah, I know he still has potential due to injury concern but he's still played a good 31 games and struggles to keep youngsters like Kennedy or spuds like Bradley quiet. Look at Michael Hurley, he's barely played at all and he's doing quite a nifty job already. I'd expect better from Williams but it just isn't happening.

I'd love to see Tom move up forward, I've heard many players at the club say they would like to see him in attack, and that he shows good signs at training, why not try it?

Gee trepidation entering these parts nowdays. Fancy judging a player on what 20 odd games. He will be a good footballer, yes hed a stinker yesterday,as did everyone. If we listened to people on here lake would be playing at another club by now!

mate i think u are getting confused. lake never played at another club

Andrew MacDougall showed a bit of promise in defence in the last few games of 2006 or 2007? and it was a pity he wasn't given similar leeway at senior level to develop his skills at CHB. A couple of games and then back to Werribee.

Sorry, it seems to me he's playing AFL because of our needs, not his. He's starting behind the 8 ball with limited pre-draft footy experience. IMO he would have been better off developing in the VFL.
