Why would they give one of the SMT towns the grand final? They’ve played in the last 3 grand finals so obviously a strong chance to make another

I agree more so just a point that half the teams don’t get to host a grand final and the best ground out of the lot has hosted 2 in 25 years. I don’t even think SMT hosted a final last year at all.

What’s the update on Delahunty and Dewar? I’ve heard they’re gone, can anyone confirm

The last 4 have been what Warrack,Dim,Dim,City oval. all central to the league. Dimboola's ground is one of the best to watch a grand final of football at if the rain doesn't turn up

Weekly advertiser an interesting read

back on the pionts thing, what happins if delahunty and dewar come back to thunder? do they just go back to there old pionts or does the pionts thing start agen?

A little known rule, but players are meant to return to a club on the same points they left on, if lower than other calculations. Even if there have been years between. We clarified this with AFL Vic a while back, but even the leagues didn't necessarily know this was the case.

So they will be on the same pionts as wen they left?

Ben Taylor left as a 4 & returned as a 1 so not sure about the one

2023- Ararat 4 pointer
2024 - 4 games for Wilson Grange
Returned to Ararat as a 1 pointer
Bit more credibility on here wouldn’t go a stray

A couple of different things here.

This is the flow chart clubs/players are meant to use to assess their points:

1775633555167.webp

My understanding is this is only meant to consider the last three years of a player's history; therefore, if someone played AFL four years ago, then on the fourth year that should not factor in to their points (even if they remain at the same country club for the next three years). It sounds like with Ben Taylor they effectively forced a reset, but I don't think that should have been required.

A couple of years ago AFL Vic asked for feedback on the system. We made a lengthy submission, which to their credit they followed up.

One point I made was that we had players that were not ex-juniors but had played a number of years at the club. One year they did not return; the next year, the league assessed them at higher points than when they left. We said in our submission that this was pretty silly really, given they were as much local as anyone else playing. When I met with the AFL Vic rep at the end of the year we spoke on this point and he told me they should not have been assessed higher than when they left. I do wonder though if that was because of the Home Player criteria not being correctly applied:

5.2. Each player expected to play in the Senior Team of a Community Club will be allocated a Category and a Player Points Allocation as follows:

5.2.1. Category 1 – Home Player – 1 Point

a) Player who has played 40 or more games over a minimum of 3 seasons * at the aligned junior club up to and including U17 Competition: or

b) Where the player pathway from junior to senior clubs’ football in an area is otherwise restrictive, a Metropolitan League or Regions in country areas have adopted By Law clauses which align specific junior and senior clubs to create a player pathway. All By Laws clauses must be approved by AFL Victoria following endorsement by the CCSP Advisory Group .

c) Player who has played a minimum of 5 games in each of any 5 consecutive seasons for the club or the aligned junior club up to and including Under 19’s or

d) A player who has played only at that Community Club or an aligned junior club, and for no other Community Club; or

e) A player who has not played Competitive Football in the previous 36 months.

Either way, I told them the system is too complicated if it cannot be easily followed. And that all of this should be handled automatically by PlayHQ - all of the data and playing history are there, so the points assignment should be automatic.

Coming back to those SMT boys - it may give them a point reassessment if they return; but based on the flow chart it also should not be necessary. What it won't do is add a one point loading, because they are returning to the same club. They aren't going to cross the three clubs in three years threshold.

The full documents regarding the CCSP can be found here: https://play.afl/victoria/resources/player-points-system

The only problem is this league makes up their own rules. The bloke that chaired the leagues best player suspension hearing last year couldn’t believe it when they went to deliberate, two ladies (you might be able to guess who) said “we can’t suspend him, he’s the best player in the league”

thank u jwshrive. Im knew to all of this and preciate you taking the time to explain not telling me to figger it out myself. i find it very interesting how it all works.

Coming from a club in the same league bumps it up as well as winning b and fs recently if I remember correctly

So based off this jwshrive “Coming back to those SMT boys - it may give them a point reassessment if they return; but based on the flow chart it also should not be necessary.”

Does that mean he should’ve been reassessed at the start of the 2024 season when the state league points from 2020 dropped off?

That's how I would read it, yes. And that's how I was told it should work. But it seems to still be a grey area for some reason.
