Stawell Mitre 10 Warriors will begin their charge to the Wimmera Football League finals when they host Nhill at Central Park tomorrow.
Warriors have had time to freshen up from their surprise loss to Warrack Eagles two weeks ago with the bye but will play the first of its seven straight games tomorrow as it heads towards finals.
Coach Dale Power said his team had a couple of light weeks on the track since its loss to the Eagles and were treated to a visit from former Carlton player Glenn Manton during their team meeting on Tuesday night (see photo page 55).
``It went well... they gave each other feedback and identified a few areas to work on in the second half of the year,'' Power said.
``We have got seven rounds then finals so it's not ideal to have the bye so early.
``We have got to see where we are at after the last loss, hopefully we're ready.''
Power expected Justin Thomas (ankle), Travis Nicholson (foot) and Shane Field (reserves) to be up for selection for tomorrow's match, but rated Julian Carr as `doubtful' after the forward dislocated a kneecap during Stawell's clash at Warracknabeal.
The absence of Carr, who tops the Warriors goalkicking with 24 goals in 2008, would place an added responsibility on 2007 Toohey Medal winner Brent Tuckey and Sam Anyon as well as Scott Nicholson up forward.
Power said Damien McDonald remained a few weeks away from playing his first match of the season, but expected ruckman Bryce Homden (knee) to make his return through the reserves tomorrow.
He expected Nhill to be a much more polished outfit than the one Stawell thumped by 69 points in round three, largely due to the addition of key player Jarryd Graham.
Power expected Graham or Big W representative Sean Bayzand to line up on Tuckey, who has had an extra week on the sidelines to get over a niggling groin injury.
Classy Nhill coach Joel Price will be another of the danger men for the Warriors around the middle and up forward, while Graeme Cole poses a threat in front of the sticks with 25 goals this season.
Warrack Eagles will be able to test out their form when they host Horsham Demons tomorrow.
The Eagles, now third, have won their last three matches against Horsham United, Stawell and Nhill but face a massive task in the Demons.
However, their running style of play will surely test the Demons who are yet to drop a game in 2008.
Horsham United gets the chance to score its second win of the season when it meets the struggling Horsham Saints.
United has won just one game this season but won't be able to leapfrog Minyip-Murtoa off the bottom because they have the bye.
Ararat looks a strong chance of regaining third position on the ladder with a victory over the out of sorts Dimboola.

Likely Stawell line-up
B:I Rathgeber, B Williamson, J Davis
HB: N Thomas, J Delahunty, D Thomas
C: J Duke, B Scott, S Jenkins
HF: S Nicholson, B Tuckey, J Thomas
F: D Power, S Field, S Anyon
R: J Margetson, T Newton, P Hanns
Int (from): A Dunn, S Jones, O Adam, M Batsiua, T Nicholson

"I would warn the HDFL we are still handy on the field. If you disagree, I would remind everyone about our preseason game againist Laharum. They had a full side and we were missing a number of players. We lost but have been underfeated this season while Laharum is third. It just goes to show you can't spend your way to a flag."

You dont even make sense you clown. The HDFL could put a side together from this seasons players and could nearly beat the WFL.

Backs rentsch m leeming cadzow

hforward tucker sproule m ward plus butsch and jye smith aroud the hf

You could then pick at least 5 or so blokes to start on the pine.
That side would just about pip the WFL rep side..

Stawell Warriors were a class above Nhill on Saturday, especially after half time. They booted 10 goals straight in the third term to end the match as a contest.

Otto Adam looks like a couple of weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury and Daniel Thomas was suffering a backside injury and played only about half of the match.

Stawell Mitre 10 Warriors got their Wimmera Football League season back on track on Saturday with an easy 78 point win over Nhill.
Warriors, fresh from a week off with the bye, powered away from the Tigers after half time with a 10 goal straight third term to end the match as a contest.
Senior coach Dale Power said his team had responded well since its surprise defeat at the hands of Warrack Eagles.
``We have copped a bit of flak because of the loss to Warrack Eagles, but it shows a lot of character to turn around and go forward,'' Power said.
``We have turned it into a positive I hope.''
Power was also impressed with the way his charges played to instructions.
``To carry out instructions is really pleasing, there is nothing more frustrating than when you give instructions and they are not carried out,'' Power said.
``To go out and win enough of the ball to play a style of game that we wanted to play was much better today.''
However, the victory has come at some cost with Nauruan livewire Otto Adam injuring a hamstring shortly before kicking his second goal of the game in the third term. Power expected Adam to be out for a couple of weeks, therefore missing this Saturday's grand final rematch with Horsham at City Oval.
Stawell's day wasn't all smooth sailing with the visitors banging on three of the first four goals to take an early lead. Their lead didn't last long, however, as goals from Sam Anyon, Steve Jenkins, Julian Carr (two) and Brent Tuckey helped Stawell out to a 22 point quarter time lead.
Despite a struggle, the home side was then able to extend its lead out to 28 points by half time before the pedal was pushed flat to the floor.
In a brilliant third term performance, Warriors piled on 10 goals straight to Nhill's 2.1 in one of their best single-quarter efforts for the season.
The two teams then kicked four goals each in the final term, but it was the Warriors who proved to be the more classy outfit on the day.
After dislocating his kneecap in the clash with Warrack Eagles two weeks before, forward Julian Carr was at his brilliant best for Warriors with six goals. Scott Nicholson was also impressive, James Delahunty and Isaac Rathgeber were important across half back and ruckman Jorah Margetson again turned in a great display of tap work. Simon Jones played his best game of the season and appears to be finding some welcomed form and Steve Jenkins was handy on a wing. Adam Clayton was an opportunist with three goals in the second half.
Warriors will now prepare themselves for their second crack at Horsham this season on Saturday, looking to reverse a 27 point loss when the teams last met at Central Park in round four.
Justin Thomas and Bryce Homden both played in the reserves on the comeback from respective ankle and knee injuries, while Travis Nicholson sat out his third straight match with a foot problem.
STAWELL TIMES-NEWS BEST: Julian Carr, Scott Nicholson, Steve Jenkins, Ben Scott, James Delahunty, Jorah Margetson.
Other results on the weekend saw Ararat thump Dimboola by 105 points, with coach Scott Turner booting six goals, Horsham Saints easily accounted for rivals Horsham United by 55 points and Warrack Eagles could only get within 65 points of premiership favourites Horsham at ANZAC Park. Luke Carr was at his brilliant best with nine goals for the winners.

Anyone have a prediction of the top 5 players to win the toohey medal this year

Karl Lohde to win by a mile in a team without any other consistent performers. Horsham and Stawell share around their talent too much this year for a Toohey, Al Batchelor from Ararat is an eye catcher but no one will get close to Lohde, pencil him in.

Great to see the new Wimmera League Commissioner Johns turning into the Wimmera's own Sam Newman offering his opinon on everything. Not real smart considering he owns a business in the town. Wouldn't think it'd be great for business slagging off at other clubs (Wimmera and District). Pretty easy to throw mud when things are going well.

I like johns comments because he tells his opinion bluntly and doesnt beat around the bush, i'd rather listen to someone who has a footy CV like his then one of those dheads that write for the MT who have no idea.

Im not pointing any club or league or anything out in particular but there a few clubs in the Wimmera and district that need to wake up to themselves and consider if they continue to jus go through the motions as they have for a long time now and not change anything up then they wont see there way into 2010 there are a few clubs going around in crisis mode and they dont even know it.

Nhill to Horsham and District league Animal??

Nhill to Horsham and District league Animal??

Just one prime example...........
there is still a few others but i'd say that one stands out.
Dimboola were in a similar situation a few yrs ago but somehow got out of it say what u want about them throwing heaps of money around but they still went out and got it then did the work and got the players and there supporter and sponser base grew significantly and people in dimboola became more interested, nhill are happy to talk to the same players they have talked to for the last 10yrs get a new coach every now then and continue to sit in the bottom 3 all yr every yr yet they have always had good junior exports usually having 1 or 2 on the rebels list every year. sure its hard keep juniors in the town due to little to NO employment but thats something the club cant control what they can control is sucking in there pride dropping a level and giving there supporters and players somethin to play for rather then getting up nearly every saturday morning knowing you have little to no chance of winning.
Thats how i see it anyway i havent had much to do with the club for a few yrs now but i have seen how other clubs go about it.
Football is about enjoying the game and no one enjoys losing week in week out year in year out.
Thats my opinion anyway.

Is there any truth to the rumour that in yesterdays mail times there was a letter to the editor bagging out horsham. I didnt get the paper yesterday but would just like to know wat the letter was about

Yeah it was a pretty good letter with a few home truths (not all) but he is right when talking about the Juniors at Horsham. They have offered new footy boots and other apparel as incentives to young kids to get them to play for the Demons which is a disgrace and they do seem to want to have as many on their list as possible even if half of them dont get regualr games, and it is true that some of them get a bit sooky when other clubs apporach Horsham juniors offering them opportunities to play Wimmera League at another club rather than getting farmed out to Natimuk to play below average district league standard because they have 35-40 players trying to get in the 22 each week. Not much point playing for Horsham in Wimmera league if you are actually playing for Natimuk in district league is there?!!
There needs to be a cap on numbers at junior level and why dont Horsham (and even Nhill) provide left overs to other WFL clubs who have struggled for numbers like Dimboola, Minyip Murtoa or United. No different to giving them to the district league and then we keep them in WFL footy. Horsham Demons do not offer this especially to the other Horsham WFL based clubs because they are scared those players may want to stay and leave the Demons but they know none of them will stay at clubs like Natimuk so it is a safe bet especially if any of them end up being future stars.
it is about giving kids games of footy and ideally keeping them in Wimmera League not about how many you have on your club list.

That needs to be the motto for junior football.

I think that u will find that Nhill gives a handful of players to pimpinio each weekend to help them as well as topping up the nhill reserves side many weeks due to struggling numbers

I think Al Batchelor will poll well, but agree Lohde is way out in front at the moment..
thoughts on the coming weekends games?

just wondering if stawell have much depth or have any standout players in there seconds side even though they,re undefeated that can really stand up in the seniors and maybe cement a spot in the ones?
