Well c'mon you must admit windows sucks
I haven't had a crash in about 6 months when was your last one?

Ok...all OS's crash eventually...
what I use at work:
Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.8 Generic Patch October 2001

Unix is an old operating system that is very stable....but it has been known to go down maybe once in about every 2 years.

Win2k
Use that as well...and have never had a crash in the last 12 months.

What I use at home:
XP Professional

Even more stable than W2k....haven't had a crash and have been running it since Jan '02.

It has taken M$ a long time to get it right, but W2k and XP are extremely stable.

So....if you want to compare unix's, Linux is good but it's kid stuff in the unix world.

I'm always amazed at how the Linux script kiddies always have to barge their way into a M$ thread and tell you how great Linux is....you know,..."mine is bigger than yours".

Well quite honestly.....who cares?

I can turn around (as per my previous post) and say "my Unix is bigger than your Unix".....but quite honestly.....who cares?

Yes, i tried that without success and emailed each of the software companies who produced the game. They all said the same thing. The game was not written for XP which das a different files structure. Take your game back to the shop where you bought it and get a refund!!

Which game? Given XP can run both NTFS and FAT32 what they're telling you sounds a little like BS to me.

Not trying to convert the hordes just offered my opinion which i thought everyone was entitled to?

Thanks for the input all. I'm now running XP Pro (full) and it's a very stable little unit these days. Legacy software compatibility is a minor gripe - Easy CD Creator XP update is how much? - and I thought it would have handled DVD's out of the box. My Netcomm modem also plays silly buggers from time to time. But swings and roundabouts I guess.

PS: For the record, I'm running Red Hat 7.1 (w/- KDE & Win4Lin) on the old PC as a learning experience, so I'm not too scared of Linux. But I guess it's like Fords and Holdens - both do the job, but everyone's got a preference.

That you are, but do you want to know how many of these "Linux is better" posts I've seen over the last 3 - 4 years?

It gets tiresome.

As I said earlier, since W2k, M$ has started to finally get it's act together as far as stability goes.

Unix (and it's derivatives) will always be more stable....it should be, developers have had 20 years or more to get it that way, but when it can run M$ compatible software in native mode then I might "think" about switching over :) (compiling kernels is also boring).

xp is by far and away the best windows ever made. very stable.

The following is for informational purposes only :D
how to register without registering
-----------------------XP "BuG"----------------------

Using UltraEdit shareware software (HEX editor)
(or any other hex editor)
in winlogon.exe HEX edit

1. where: address 0x00039660h OR 0x00039662h (Home or PRO)
find 8B D1 57 33 C0 89 02 89 42 08
change to C7 06 01 00 00 00 83 EE 04 C3
(use search function in ultraedit)
2. save edited file as winlogon.tmp extension
3. loaded XP in safemode
4. rename winlogon.exe to winlogon.mmm
5. renamed the .tmp file to .exe
6. reboot

---------------------------------------------------------
This is illegal, dont you dare do it, go and pay
the richest man in the world ,who btw supports the
apartheid against the palestinians,200 dollars instead

but linux > win
insulting that guy wasnt nice, you no doubt did it becuase you know hes right and obviously dont like that fact :)
win is ok for begginers. but when linux can offer everything that windows can in terms of GUI's and ease of installation (which isnt far away) windows wont stand a chance. Linux is akward to learn atm but the rewards are definantly worth it. I study CS at uni and i know it would be sooooo annoying if we had to work with windows.

eg you have 10000 files you want to delete all files that have the pattern ekd-123 to ekd-777.
Not only that but almost every single application is more powerfull in linux. They offer greater flexibility and although
they are hard to learn to use once you learn you will never use
a lame windows clone again. eg gvim or notepad, ermm ummm
