Need a bit of help setting up a wireless network.

At the moment we have about 5 computers all linked up via cables. That is fine, however i want to have wireless setup also for the few laptops we have.

Simple question. Do i just need a wireless router ? That connects to the current connection ?

Thanks

You should purchase a router that allows you to use "AP Mode", this means you can add it to your current network and all it will do is accept wireless clients onto your existing network. Alot easier to setup compared to bridged mode

No.

What you need is an access point. Plug that into your existing switch and you should be fine. A router is a completely different bit of hardware that may have an access point built into it but is specifically designed to separate networks (ie local lan and internet) and route traffice between them. Nowadays the terms have become quite vague - however, a router in it's true form is most definately not suitable for what you want.

This is an example of what you require. This is an example of what you don't want because it has an internet connection as well built in which you already have. It also has a DHCP server that will cause havoc with your existing setup.

You do know going complete wireless put's you and your family in a bigger risk of developing things like cancer/leukemia. Wireless has advantages but I'm not sure how safe it is especially if we go all the way making everything in the house that way.

You got to be joking? Do you have a cordless phone at home, baby monitor or a microwave oven? They are at 2.4Ghz as well, same with Blue Tooth.

The range of these devices is limited, Bluetooth is about 10 metres, wireless internet about 100 metres and cordless phones about the same.

Now do you own a mobile phone? If so and you're worried about low power devices like wireless internet then you should stay well away from mobile phone signals. I suggest some deserted island as the range of a mobile phone signal is about 40Kms from the cell tower.
