you need to buy a wireless router.
ie

this will give you wireless support and a 4 port switch.
plug your desktop into one of the the wired ports
setup the laptop and router to talk to each other
(this isn't fantastically difficult really)
plug router into current broadband modem. (there will be a port for this usually labeled WAN)
there are any number of these things that range in price from $60 - $400. talk to a few of the surrounding computer shops, ask them what they use etc and tell them how big your place is and where the thing will be placed
