I'm a huge fan of those bands you have listed, and I digress. There's no doubt Wolfmother have been influenced by the 70s metal scene, but they still have their own sound and they sound pretty damn awesome to me. How many bands these days haven't been influenced by other artists?

And Wolfmother sounds very little like Dio BTW, even if they have used the same themes. I think they sound more like Zeppelin than any other band, and I think Zeppelin is a pretty damn good band to sound a bit like!!

Of course all musos/bands have influences, but there's a stark difference between gathering inspiration from listening to certain artists, and being almost totally derivative.

To me they generally sound very similar to early Sabbath, with a hint of Deep Purple from the John Lord-like keys in some songs. And then there's one song (Apple Tree I think) that sounds exactly like the White Stripes. The Dio comparison was in reference to the absurdity of their lyrical themes. I've got pretty much everything Led Zep put out and I don't think there's much similarity to be honest. Zep were essentially a heavy blues/folk band, and had far more of an emphasis on groove and swagger than anything I've heard from Wolfmother.

Still hypocritical for Patton to whinge"what year are we in"then isn't it?

No. How much 60s Italian music have you heard? How much of it do you know? That's the difference. Making that style of music for a modern English speaking audience would being doing something different. Wolfmother making songs that sound _exactly the same_ as many many British and American bands of the past 40 years is just incredibly lame.

However, being that you said Patton "Has done SFA for 15 years and has become irrelevent", I don't expect you to understand, because you're obviously utterly clueless. I mean really, you don't know of _any_ of the groups/projects that he's been involved in since Faith No More? Unbelievable.

As for buying Zeppelin albums at half price, where?
You can buy the first 4 or 5 albums from any JB for less than $10 each. You wont pay more than $15 for the rest except for the How the West Was Won compliation which is still a bit pricey.

While you're there, you should also buy the 2 DVD live set.

If you dont own them, you should. It will certainly put Wolfmother in a different light.

Have most of them on record or tape(bought a long time ago)looking to update my collection to CD
Which live set "The Song Remains The Same"if so I already have that on tape, unfortunately no longer have tape player in car.No JB in Geraldton and music bars in town seem to charge the same for most everything. No Led Zeppelin in the bargan bin either.
Wolfmother are not in the same league as Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath,Deep Purple etc,but so far they sound a lot better than most of the excrement being released atm

clone the classics, repackage and sell to the youth....and don't they love it.
Got to learn about the classics somewhere
Have to think that talk of WM sounding a bit like Zeppelin,Sabbath and Deep Purple just might get youngsters asking about and listening to them.
As a kid I used to raid my Dads record collection, maybe my kids will do the same

That's the only point I will concede. I would much rather Wolfmother be popular than the countless amounts of 'artists' being successful on the back of completely contrived, completely disposable pap. But that in iteslf doesn't give them credibility or change my opinion on them at all. Best of a bad bunch is still bad. Just not as bad won't cut it.

I hate fake things in the music industry. Pete Murray puts me to sleep, but I am under no illusions as to what he is and neither is he IMO. But for Wolfmother to be held up there with some of the bands mentioned in this thread and to smash their instruments at the ARIA's and to be labelled rock god's just winds me up. It's rubbish.

Australian rock music is in pretty good shape ATM. And it's got SFA to do with Wolfmother.
