Awesome News!

Didn't want to count our chickens before they hatched when I heard we had approached Vossy (and Bucks and Roo) but have to admit to a few silent prayers hoping it would be Voss. Now that its done I reckon this is going to be a fantastic appointment both on and off the field.

Vossy commands so much respect and is held in such high regard around AFL circles it is a real coup for us considering Carlton, Essendon and the GC franchise couldn't nab him. This gives our administration, which has copped a fair bit over the last 18 months a good win. It stops the rot and gets them off the canvas. The morale boost that this will have around the club can't be underestimated. This speaks volumes for our administration AND will speak volumes to the player group.

I reckon this appointment has just turned this season around for us. That might seem over the top, but its going to have a positive impact on our performance over the next eight rounds let alone the next couple of years (not sure what this will mean for our first draft choice position though). The boys will be falling over themselves trying to make a good impression and making sure they 'catch his eye' over the next few months and the pre-season.

Michale Voss... Welcome to the West Coast Eagles!

Well done guys - this is a real coup; I'm jealous you snagged him. He'll bring two things to the Eagles I wish Freo had - his experience on an alternative approach of setting up a midfield (not saying the Eagles midfeild setup was flawed - it wasn't, but the Bris Fab 4 were also a pretty good unit), and some inside info on the kids coming through AIS. Timing wise, this couldn't be better for you - the Eagles look likely to get a low first round pick (and potentially a second round PP) and there is really only the one solid draft available prior to the new teams grabbing the cream. The AIS knowledge will be invaluable here.

Kudos to ever headed this up for you - thought he was a shoe-in for GC or at Brissy.
Thanks for that.

I hadn't really thought about him bringing in some inside knowledge on the best kids to draft. But you are right, his knowledge may mean we snag a really good prospect later in the draft, to go with the really good prospect we get early in the draft!;)

Cheers Thebaxters, good post.

I honestly think that Voss will be taking over Sumich's job, going from what Woosha said on the news tonight. Curious as to whether Suma will take over the forward line now, or whether Voss will be eased in with a 'technical' coaching spot.

Can't imagine where Roo or Buckley would fit in now; just because they were champions players doesnt' mean they'd be great tactical coaches - although Buckley seems to have a lot of knowledge.(not saying we could secure either of them by the way)

Neale Daniher would be another plus to our rebuilding. But we honestly need specialist forward and backline coaches, not just big names.

Sumich is now our "Senior Assistant Coach".

Great news in getting Voss over here. A few weeks ago people in this forum were calling for Worsfold to be sacked and replaced with Voss  This outcome was a little more realistic and practical though. I didn't think he'd ever come over though, that GC job was his all the way, lucky for us he didn't get the contract he was hoping for.

I'm not expecting either Buckley or Roo to join him, but hopefully Neale Daniher will join our football department in some role.

:confused::confused:

I don't recall anyone suggesting that, unless it was anti. in yet another of his off-beat moods. ;)

Anyway, like everyone else, I think it's great that he's coming here, and I would have put money on it when the topic was discussed with him at half-time during some game a few weeks ago.

Maybe we can get Bluey Mac back as a defensive coach, pretty much anyone for a forward coach (anything would be better than the nothing we've had for ages now), and pension Suma off to concentrate on his blaah, mumbling, meaningless media bytes.

Funnily enough when I went to work last night, all the Freo supporters were telling me that Voss was Mark Harvey II!

They think Voss is after Worsfolds job and it is only a matter of time.

The one other person I think they should chase is Don Pyke.

Imagine, we would then have coaches who had worked under Malthouse, Matthews, Craig and Pagan. There has to be some prized knowledge in amongst that lot!

Worsfold instigated Voss coup

JUST 19 days after approaching Michael Voss with an offer to join the West Coast Eagles, coach John Worsfold expressed delight in announcing the major coaching coup.

Worsfold, flanked by club chairman Mark Barnaba and chief executive Trevor Nisbett, met with Voss after the club's 135-point loss to Geelong in round 13, which the triple-premiership player was calling for Channel 10.

It was the only formal meeting held regarding the position, and today the club announced Voss will join West Coast for the next two seasons, commencing with pre-season this November.

"I just went there prepared to talk openly about what I thought we could offer," Worsfold said when announcing the appointment on Wednesday.

"I've had some contact with Michael over the last couple of years and enjoyed just catching up with him and talking about football without a view of ever looking at him coaching at this club.

"All I knew is that he was keen to get involved coaching next year, but I was always confident that he had absolute belief in what our club could offer him, as well as what it can offer our playing group. It's going to be a good match."

The players set to benefit most from the Brownlow Medallist's appointment are the club's plethora of young midfielders. Worsfold suggested they would be Voss' main responsibility with current midfield coach Peter Sumich to have a more versatile senior role.

Worsfold said Chris Masten and Brad Ebert, who have trained under Voss at the AFL-AIS Academy, were very excited with the appointment, but the benefits would be far reaching.

"Those guys know him, so I'm sure they're excited about it," Worsfold said. "But some of the other young guys, like Jamie McNamara, I think there's going to be a huge upside in the experience they can gain from working with Michael Voss.

"[Peter Sumich] will work extremely closely with Michael and offer his experience regarding the midfield with the work he's done with them over the last seven years. I think that's just going to make that even stronger.

"He will sit over the top as senior assistant coach and work with Michael.

"As a rookie coach coming in, he’ll need some feedback and that'll be given to him regularly about how to implement his ideas and Summa's got the experience to assist him with all those areas."

Worsfold said the major attraction in getting Voss to the Eagles was his character and success as a player, but he was adamant the club's coaching staff needed a recently retired player onboard.

"That's part of it, that he's fresh out of the game. I've been out of the game now for 10 years, and Summa a couple of years longer.

"So that's certainly a benefit. He's played under a number of different coaches but a lot under Leigh Matthews, and he'll bring his own set of ideas to the football club.

"He was a player that, going back two or three weeks ago, became pretty clear to me that we need to add for something fresh at the football club.

"It wasn't just going to be anything. It was going to be the best we could possibly get.

"What we know that is a certainty is what Michael will bring to the football club immediately and over at least a two-year period. We're very excited about that."

I am most excited for Shannon Hurn. Hopefully he can have a huge preseason and get his fitness levels up and get a bit leaner to push into the midfield a lot more in 2009. Hurn was meant to be that Hodge/Voss type player and he really hasnt come along like we probably have thought. Now under the tutorage of Voss he can hopefully reach the potential we all know he has.

I think its a very positive step forward by the club and well done to the club and to Woosha on the appointment.
I hope now this is the start of a new era for the club where we can become a positive football side with an attacking inclination, it may take some time but here's hoping.

Well done Eagles and welcome Vossy, please John listen to these new guys.

Still think hes a arrogant knob, but hes our arrogant knob now. Welcome aboard Michael. :thumbsu:

Happy with the appointment. A nice positive in the middle of a tough year.

Does anyone know where Voss' legal issues are at? He was charged with assault and I assume the matter has been resolved but, if not, I can just imagine the headlines when Caro reports "Eagles assistant coach appears on assault charges.." etc etc

He was an absolute champion player, hardly surprising people had high hopes for him as an assistant.

Or perhaps it highlights ignorance of thinking a bloke with pretty well no coaching experience would be our saviour...

At least when you're talking about draftees, they have played juniors and state league footy as an indication.

Can't argue with the first part...... but really you sound like you are gloating and I think the bump is a little random and strange.

We don't know whether he would have been a passable assistant.

Has possibly made some big blues as head coach without the required experience, but not all of Brisbanes current issues can be layed squarely at his feet.

Also what if Brisbane finish higher than us on the ladder this year??? What does that say about Voss or our current coach/players/administration. Tough call to lay the blame on only one factor (the coach).

If Brisbane finish higher than us it will be on the back of 3 30yr+ olds with short life spans and 2 players in Rich and Clark who may not be there at the end of the season.

It was reported that the inquiry into Brisbane found that the board gave way too much power to a handfull of people, the coach mostly.

If they do manage to keep all of there players, still finish low and with there PP (from trading with GC) grab 4 early draft picks this year the future for them will start looking allot brighter though. Especially if it is a good draft year.

I don't recall being against Voss's appointment.

In fact, I was probably for it. But getting carried away with little supporting evidence is a wee bit silly.

See the highlighted. Shouldn't the board then shoulder much of the blame.

I am not defending Voss by any means, but being able to bump a thread and gloat about peoples poor foresight is hardly something to hang your hat on, especially when we don't know whether Vossy as an assistant may have worked out for us, or whether he may yet come good as a senior coach.

For them to win games it will also take more than just the players listed performing.
