Next term I have to do work experience. I have no idea what I should do and I need some ideas. I was thinking about going to a footy club (even if it is the Eagles or Dockers!) but I wouldn't know what area to work in. I like the media so perhaps a tele station or something?

Anyway, if you did work experience, where did you do it at?

Did mine at MMM and Inside Football Magazine.

Over there, for media I'd try all the TV stations, all the newspapers, all the footy/sports magazines, and just keep trying. If you are determined to get work experience in a field, you can do it.

Footy clubs, try the two WA clubs, and if desperate, maybe some of the WAFL clubs?

Good luck...

My son did work experience with The Sunday Times, evidently they are very open to having schools send students there, I think you will find it hard at TV stations, my son tried all of them & they are almost impossible to get a job at.
Maybe you could try Access 31 TV station, they are always willing to take on volunteers, so work experience shouldn't be a problem.

afl clubs r VERY reluctant to allow work experience people in, unless u have connections at the club. but yeah the newspapers are always letting people do work experience, and yeah the tv channels r good as well. Good luck

I did mine at the Hawthorn Football Club.

Very enjoyable experience and I suggest that anyone who does get the opportunity to do their work experience at a football club uses their chance, because it is a great place to learn.

What exactly did you do at the club Rob? Like what areas did you work in?

I went to the Herald Sun.
The key is get in early, cos all the good places are taken pretty much straight away. And keep ringing them to see if they got your application, because they like that.

A friend of mine tried some of the tv stations and most of the repsonses were that they'd only take people actually doing some sort of media course!!

Kate :)

My dad's mentioned working at the WACA, the local lesuire centre and woolworths, lol.

Working at the Eagles would be ideal as my mum works in Subi and would be able to give me a lift there every day so hopefully they'll help out.

So how did you get into that? Know someone? :p ;)

I worked in merchandise, volunteers, social club etc. and just helped them out generally in those areas.

But you get a chance to meet the players etc. throughout the week as well which is good.

I was thinking of doing work experience with the Gold Coast Bulletin up here. Its a program that is arranged through my school.

However, you lose a school day during the week, which is very costly in Year 12.

I was wondering what those who have done work experience at newspapers think of it. Like what type of things do they get you to do?

Thanks all. :)

Access 31 in Perth is pretty good for community TV, actually. You could do worse things.

My son was doing what they get the "Copy" cadets to do, mainly just reading all the copy before it went to print, checking for mistakes etc, plus all the menial jobs like running errands, photocpying etc, but he really enjoyed the proof reading side of it.

i did mine at a local council as a recreational officer. it was pretty fun. went to a few meetings and helped organise a few things and even wrote an article for the local newpaper
did have a lot of fun doing it:)

Inside Football Magazine was good. First day, was shown how they operate the magazine, how they organize it, from the writers, art guy, editor, etc.

Then went to an interview with Mal Brown and Craig O'Donaghue for Tony Woods at a South Yarra cafe. Mal Brown shouted me cappucino, and we had a good chat before Tony showed up. Watched them interview him, then fired a few questions off myself.

Went back, did a few shadow articles.

Can't remember what I did on the second day, except I did the quiz for the magazine. Then I got my media pass, went to the MCG that night and sat in the press box for the Collingwood vs. St. Kilda match. Watched Collingwood win after the awful display (this was 2000 when they were both really sh*t), then went into the Micky Malthouse press conference, shook hands with Eddie Mac, interviewed Rupert Betheras, and then got a cabcharge courtesy of Kerry Packer home to Dandenong from the 'G'.

Good experience, but the guy who took me everywhere, Craig O'Donaghue thought I was cocky because I told him Hawthorn would make the finals, and as he was a Bomber, and we were languishing at the time, he thought I was stupid and cocky. Never got to tell him how right I was... ;)

I was handed my work experience to me on a platter ,doing ti with my dad and getting $500 for the 2 weeks, not the crappy $5 a day standard.

I still have never done anything off my own bat and at 18 and about to start a commerce degree at uni, I've never had a part-time job.

In WA you don't get any pay, it is all slave labour.

A friend of mine did hers at the Dockers RF#1, and absolutely loved it. She spent a day in each area of the club, seeing all the differents facets involved. It might be worth contacting them if you get in early. Mind you, if you want to see how a real club operates..... ;) (not sure if we take on students, worth a try though :) )

Another option is one of the main radio stations.

Meanwhile, I did mine in a Physio, then a Pharmacy. It obviously worked. :)

Whatever you do, don't do it at an office. I did mine at my dads work and for 3/4 of the day I sat in front of the computer watching the time tick by on the bottom right corner of the screen. The other 1/4 was spent entering data into the new computers...not the most exciting thing to be doing!

Make sure you dont leave it too long, either, or youll find yourself slaving your @rse off at Coles and getting paid the default $5 p/day.

I did mine in a solicitor's office and it was sh*t boring.

But I ended up a lawyer, and it's not boring at all.

I think there's something in that for all of us:)

Sounds similar to me...I did work experience with my dad (he's a merchant banker) and got paid $200 each week for the 2 weeks. That was pretty good back in 1987 (and my friends got the standard $20 per week). I went on to complete an Economics degree at Monash, and I didn't have a part time job either (only worked during the summer holidays for the 3 years I was at Uni, at Goldmark).

Thought I'd post here, just to give you guys a laugh, and an example of how times change.

I started High School in 1971, when I got to 5th year High, the teachers were talking about work experience for students who applied for it.

That is, if we were keen, the High School would arrange for each student who applied, to have a week working at a local primary school.

There was no pay for this, just an opportunity to see if you would like to become a teacher.

It turned out to be one of the worst weeks of my life, it did convince me however that I'd never ever become a teacher, those Grade 4 little bastards left me for dead, lol

Perhaps Bob Dylan said it best "These times they are a changing"
