I now work on the boats that ply up and down the Yarra and in the bay here in Melbourne. I do menial stuff. It's kinda hard to explain to people there that I was doing a postdoc in Florence a few months ago. But the weird thing is, despite the woeful pay, long hours, and unglamorous nature of the work, I quite like it. The people are nice, I get to talk to others for a change, and there's an honesty about it.

Which got me thinking... why do people do what they do? How much does money play a part? What other things influence what you do?

I work in child care because its what ive always wanted to do (dont ask me why) , moneys not that great, but i guess as long as you love what you do then thats the main thing.

my boyfriend has a good job and gets the big bucks, but he likes the pressure and likes meeting new people. he can also set his own schedule so if we want 2 meet up during the day we can :)

I now work in a bottle shop, which I absolutely love because a/ my old job really sucked when all the people I stayed there for had left, the workplace got more and more dangerous, and the hours longer, b/The people are awesome and totally laid back, very helpful, very friendly, all of that c/ The money is nearly twice what I was earning in my previous job, d/ I don't work as many hours, which means more time to myself, which is a good thing to an extent, e/ There's nowhere near the ammount of pressure there was at my previous job.

I guess it's all relative for me.

Work is definately over rated:D
I dont mind it and have never been shy of it so to speak but the weekends read "play" are not damn long enough.

Im a Project Officer, read "gopher" but it has a certain amount of autonomy about it which I like despite going for this and that at the whim of my manager from time to time.

My main role is as a "change agent" which is a big challenge in a 120 odd year old workplace but the moneys very good and I can take hols anytime without too much fuss.

Mechanic...I have always been into cars. Finished year 12 and walked straight into an apprenticeship. The money is shyte...i knew it wasnt a huge paying job, but if i knew then what i knew now i would have taken the Maintenance fitter apprenticeship 6 years ago.

I have had to get another job on many occasions because the money was so crap. Especially as an apprentice. Worked as a Brickies laborour and done some Bouncing at a few of geelongs nightclubs. Given them away now as my current job pays a lot better but still isn't enough.

i part own a photography/camera business.... pays well, its getting me a house and got me a $46,000 car.... just very stressful :)

need more holidays!

I work part-time during uni and full-time in holidays at a Lingerie store, because I have a compulsive underwear-spending habit and may as well get staff discounts :D

I work in a K-MART store. I hate the job, the customers all seem to be ******ed, and managers are absolutely stupid. The stories i could tell you about my job would make you realise how lucky you are not to be working there.

Only reason I still work there is cause I haven't finished my Uni degree yet.

Disagree. As I said before, I work in a Lingerie Store, and trust me, NO-ONE wants to hear 80 year old grannies looking for cotton briefs so they can 'breathe'

I love my job, great boss, a few perks, but **** pay, :( , so all up I guess I am lucky, if I got an extra $100 a week & we relocated to Melbourne, it would be the perfect job. :D

I work in a Gloria Jeans and we got a new manager about 2 months ago and she SUCKS! I used to have a regular 5 hour shift on fridays, which fitted in with my uni schedule perfectly, but since she took over the rostering I have worked a grand total of 3.5hrs in a month because I had uni exams and the availabilities I gave in (my normal friday hours and then some) weren't good enough and now i'm getting penalised for it. I also have not been properly trained at anything except registers since I started over a year ago, while the cute 15y.o guy who started on the same shift as me has been trained in everything. Hopefully next week I should be telling them to bugger off and then be switching stores!

I work at the Super Cheap Auto distribution centre. Pay is average, but I have the option of working lots of overtime if I want to. The job itself is pretty cruisy. Managers aren't ********s, and most of the people there are pretty good.

I'm happy with the job at the moment, because it is only a 10 minute bike ride from my house, and I get more than enough money that I need. When I go back to uni next semester I'll be able to work 4 days and go to uni 1 day a week. So it will be good to be earning around $400/week while still at uni.

I've always said that I work in child care for the love of the job, not the pay. :p Fortunately I care very little about money......

The centre I'm at is awesome, I'm employed via an agency (it's not your standard centre it's run by corporates for their employees, in this case it's the oil companies) so I can transfer interstate after 12 months with them if I want, there are some great perks and I'm doing something I really love. :) I'm only working 25 hours a week, but the pay isn't too bad, and really with all the extras I can have it's worth taking less hours for now.

I am lucky and unlucky. Lucky because I work from home, no boss looking over my shoulder, no travelling time (save 2 hours a day on average) and can work my own hours, to some extent. The money is great, but 7 days a week, no holidays, no sick leave, and looking at a 17 inch screen all bloody day. I average around 60 hours a week, but without the travel it is equivalent to around 48 hours. But with no break in nearly 2 years, Im starting to struggle.

I work offshore in the Oil and Gas industry. I either work on the Rigs themselves, or on the exploration and offshore support vessels. I work a 12 hour day, 7 days a week for a miniumum of 84 hours per week. I normally put in an extra 3-4 hours per week in unpaid overtime. During my other 12 hours im required to stay at work, and normally have no access to TV, Radio, Newspapers, Telephone, Email, internet, pretty much isolated for the time i am away. Also it is pretty dangerous work, as i know of 2 guys killed recently up North, and 2 others badily injured. Pays excellent so that keeps me interested, plus the travel overseas i do at company expense.

You are in the same situation as me, the only thing different, the current crop of managers we have aren't too bad.

No im not, im a Bosun onboard, run all the seamen ship, crane and cargo work. But i know what you mean about seismic precessing, went out with a chick who worked for Veritas Digicon, and have worked with them on various Geco and Western Vessels, and yes it looks like a boring job. Spending 12 hours a day picking velocities is not my idea of fun.

I work at the Anthill Wood Production Centre in Geelong. We go there for a few hours every day and work with wood on the production line. Every Friday we get our pay and I go straight to the milkbar and spend it on lollies and chocolate milk, sometimes I get a dim sim too.

I like work, all my friends are there.
