The sadist in me would love to see some footage of these. Anyone got some links of these, or other notable injuries?

* 2001, Jason Snell of Geelong, who suffered a broken ankle from which he was never able to play (or even run) again.

* 2002, James Hird (Essendon) suffered horrific facial injuries at Subiaco in a clash against Fremantle when teammate Mark McVeigh landed unsuccessfully from a marking contest onto James Hird's face.

* 2003, Collingwood star utility Tarkyn Lockyer was injured in the air during a tackle of a Cats player early in the Round 3 clash against Geelong. As his knee extended he suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament, sidelining him for 12 months and starting a wretched luck with injuries for a further two years.

* In a 2004 match between Adelaide and Essendon, James Hird suffered an eye injury when a Crow defender attempted to spoil the ball and hit him in the side of the face. It was another in the long list of Hird injuries.

* In a 2005 match between Richmond and Melbourne, Matthew Whelan of Melbourne lunged to smother a kick from Nathan G. Brown of Richmond. The foot became stuck in the turf, and Whelan's torso landed directly on Brown's shin, snapping both bones in the leg, in an incident whose replay has made fans shudder since.

* In the 2005 elimination final between Melbourne and Geelong, a stray boot in a ruck contest from Geelong's Steven King connected with Melbourne's Jeff White's face. The injuries were described as "similar to those of a car accident victim," requiring the insertion of several plates.

* In a 2006 match between Richmond and Collingwood, Chris Newman received a similar injury to his team mate Nathan G. Brown above.

* In a 2006 match between the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda, a hip-and-shoulder from the Bulldogs' Daniel Giansiracusa left St Kilda's notoriously unfortunate Justin Koschitzke with a fractured skull, sparking much of the debate about the safety of bumps in the game.

* In another 2006 match between Collingwood and Brisbane, Blake Caracella tried to dive on a loose ball at the same time as a Lions player, though Caracella was diving and the opponent slid in on his side. Caracella's head was pushed back by his opponent, play went on and Caracella was unable to move any lower than his neck. In the next few days, doctors said that he was lucky not to be a paraplegic after the incident. Caracella sadly retired later that year, citing medical reasons for his decision.

* In a 2006 match between St. Kilda and West Coast, Saints backman Matt Maguire had his left leg broken as a result of Tyson Stenglein sliding into his path.

Has to be Snell, his leg was completely ****ed, he had fractures all the way through it.

Can't exactly remember - been years since I've seen the footage, but I think it was Richard Osborne (for Fitzroy then) being tackled from side on and his knee giving way and his lower leg going out at a right angle laterally.

As far as the actual impact goes, Hentschel's injury in the showdown last year would be right up there. I'd never before heard about the possibility of knee replacement surgery following a knee injury sustained during a footy game. "In an amazing statement he said doctors had compared Hentschel's injury with that of a serious car-crash victim."

I remember Barnes breaking an arm for Geelong while taking a speccy some years ago, i think '96, that looked pretty gruesome. Brown's broken leg was probably the most gruesome thing i've seen. I remember hearing a player's achilles snap during a SANFL match ages ago. *shivers*

Now you mention the SANFL Ported... there was a bad injury in the state game against the WAFL last year, a Port defender who's name escapes me did his knee pretty badly and i think he might even be out for this year too.

Tom Lonergan hasn't got a mention yet? He almost died from the amount of blood he lost.

Neil Saches from Footscray would have to be the worst. He never walked again. What a waste.

This guy above was the worst, in recent times Browny's broken leg was not exactly dinner time tv. Yet they showed it over and over again, pretty sick stuff IMO.

Steven King / Jeff White happened right in front of me that day.
I dropped my bucket of chips. That horrible sound. Like wet cabbage a stainless steel benchtop.

Nathan Brown's injury has kept him out for a long time when he was meant to be in his prime.

Not only was he one of the most damaging players in the comp at the time and in career best form (averaging 4.2 goals a game or something crazy like that!) the break was horrific to watch. This was not only a "dirty" break but when he tried to return it kept him out for a 2nd consecutive year with pains forcing him to stop walking altogether. The psychological aspect of a player once so confident essentially sidelined a gun at his very peak for almost 2 years.

This pre season he has shown mercurial signs again, I'm sure he'll be back as good as ever this year!

But as it stands, he is still yet to get back to form in a real match.

Not VFL/AFL related, but here goes anyway;

Andrew 'Jock' Embry, East Perth vs Perth (I think) at the WACA ground in 1989.

Hardly anyone was at the ground so the place for some reason is like an echo chamber. Jock broke his leg on the other side of the ground to where I was sitting and you could hear the crack of his leg as though there were thunder in the air. He never played in the WAFL again unfortunately... but is still a great bloke ;)
