I have been watching VFL / AFL for over 30 years; however, Matera's game against the Pies was the worst individual effort I've ever seen, and this comes after one of his best. He was more worried about big bodies crashing into him than keeping his eyes on the ball - a very cowardly performance IMO - others will think I'm being a bit harsh perhaps, but Atkins was dropped a couple of weeks ago after a similar performance. The same fate may await little Phil.
His performance was inexcusable as he is one of the few players in the team with some years experience. Cole spooked him proper.

I really don't think he was cowardly. He just didn't get a grip on the ball all night while his skills were terrible which is unusual for him.

One bad game and you crucify him. Have you forgotten the amount of times he won us a game from scoring opportunities that weren't there, or the amount of times he was the only Eagles forward actually winning the ball?

Matera shouldn't be our one and only hope up forward, and if you blame yesterdays loss on him than obviously you don't know the first thing about footy.

Hey Daddy-4-eyes, who said anything about blaming Matera for our loss. Read my post and get off your high horse fella. Matera was not too blame for our loss, it was the lack of experience and poor game plan, especially into our 50. And as for not knowing the first thing about football, as an ex-player and more than 30 years of VFL/AFL worship, I don't think you have any idea about what I know and what I don't know 4 eyes. I suggest you change your glasses and read people's posts properly.

as long as he plays fantastically for the rest of the season, i don't really mind. people are allowed to have off days. his was a shocker yesterday, but it was also very sudden and rare, so i'm not too concerned

Mate chill out...

D4E is a respected poster on this site as he has proved with time that his posts are of high quality.

You are new to these boards and at times people will mis-understand what you are saying as they are not really used to the way you say things. Your origianl post sounded very aggressive and hence D$E's response. Give people the benefit of doubt and try and establish your credibility.

The fact that you say that you played the game and spent 30 years of worshiping VFL/AFL does not impress either. Infact you may just end up being called Suzi...

You used the word "Cowardly" to describe Materas game. Nobody is a coward. He had a bad day. It happens.

Now lets see, you single out one player, call his performance cowardly, one of the worst you've ever seen, and suggested he might be dropped (after one bad game!).

How exactly did you not expect me to think you were blaming him?

Daddy-4-eyes at no stage in my post did I put any blame on Matera for our defeat - you were reading what was not there. A player puts in a very bad performance, he puts his hand up to be dropped, his saving grace may be that Sampi is way out of sorts.
BTW, I thought this was a forum for giving an honest opinion, and not for hurling insults.
I'm am not a fan of little Phil, never will be, but if you have a little fan club running for him, that's swell, but don't insult others for not being on the Ant brigade and giving their honest view.
As I'm fairly new on this board, I guess I will catch on.
Anyway, it's good to see a few have their bob's worth.
We are after all, all West Coast Eagle supporters through thick and thin.
Roll on the next game.

Congratulations....you have made one of the worst posts Ive ever read on BF and Ive been here since the very beginning!

Matera did not play very well.

Matera is certainly not a coward.

Matera will never ever be dropped after that performance.

His performance was excusable as every player plays a bad one from time to time and thats the first bad one Fido has played in a very very long time.

After been our main forward target and leading our goalkicking year after year, AA honours to boot and he finally plays one bad one and you crucify him. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Maybe next you can jump all over the captain if he plays a bad one.

Geeze, those of you who consider yourselves the "hierarchy" of this site are surely not backward in coming forward to put the boots into a person who dared to express an honest opinion.

So what if he didn`t agree with your thoughts, he`s entitled to express his own with impunity.

no1bankteller, you of the verbal diarrhoea, would do well to ponder on the impression your posts convey.......urrgh. To add insult to injury, verbal diarrhoea with incorrect spelling.

D4E, you are, for the most part, just plain nasty. Soooooo if I say it it must be so, and don`t you dare disagree with me! I`ll take a chance and guess that you`re a sufferer of "small (in every way) man`s syndrome". Get over yourself for God`s sake.

And then there`s Jod, he of the somewhat suspect devotion to Captain Benny. Feels good does it Jod? To me, you`re the worst of all, the type who will smile to your face as he slips the knife in. Yuk, Yuk, Yuk.

Your point being?

From day one I have always said I was a crap speller and I have no intent on doing anything about it. That is what a spell check is all about. Life is for living not checking spelling. You should try that sometimes, living that is.

The rest of your post...BLAH BLAH BLAH

BLAH BLAH BLAH

BLAH BLAH BLAH

ohh and BLAH...

He is free to express his opinion, and we are free to disagree with him.

As for the rest of your post, to quote no1, "blah blah blah".

Ease up Guys!

Boy that loss to Collingwood really did hurt. I've just glanced at some posts and we are all a little touchy.

For what its worth Phil did have a shocker but as correctly pointed out by Woosha it didn't cost us the game.
However the 4 clangers kicking out from our defensive last line straight to the oppo for at least 3 goals. Now that was costly!

Blah blah blah....his post was shocking and every WC supporter knows it. Matera is a champ and he played a bad game, big deal, move on. No need to crucify him.

The poor guy just had a nightmare of a game. He is the most consistant small forward in the game and rather than be angry with him I just felt compassion for the little guy. Like when you drop a couple of sitters in the slips and are just praying it doesn't come your way. There are few worse feelings.

Richard Cole did really well on him, great match-up.

Yep you guys should give him a payrise and extend his contract based on this performance alone. The next Andrew Williams of the Collingwood team.

If that is true I can only assume that you have been a very selective watcher.

You showed a lot of courage with your posting Nearly Blonde.
I dip my lid to you.
It seems my criticism of Matera for his game (and I'm not the only one - a similar thread was running on Eagles Flying High as well) ruffled a few feathers of the bully boys on this site - They need a name, something like the Three Musketeers, but that would only flatter them.
Criticism can be justified; however, bagging can not. And I would never bag a player. Maybe it is the same posters who incessantly bag Trent carrol. Coral may not be in the same league as Cousins or Judd, but he is courage personified and he always gives 120% effort, even though he makes a few errors or gives away a careless free. Iam happy enough to have him in the 22 as the 3rd tall - that's his role, not as a full-back.
Getting back to Matera, I'm sure he knows he put in a really bad one too. If he is selected for the Crows game, I hope he redeems himself. I would love to see him kick a bagful. I only hope he plays the role he is supposed to - crumb.
By the way AA players have been relegated before, captains and vice-captains as well.
Anyway, with the boys back on Subi, I'm hoping for a win in which all the boys can cover themselves in glory.
Cheers!

I'm certainly not selective in the games I watch Mick Ryan. I watch 4 / 5 games every weekend - have done for about 8 years - even watching the teams I dislike vehemently - like Collingwood and Essendon. So I know when someone puts in a bad one, don't worry. But let's hope that this Saturday, there won't be any bad performances from our boys. Zeroing in for a win.
