There are some shockers at the moment and I'd like to know who you think is the worst?

From Brian Blackmore calling the wrong winner in a race at Stawell two weeks ago to Brian Markovic's "these two will fight it out" only have a horse come over the top and roll the duo. The worrying thing is the older generation are being replaced by young blokes who have no character in the way they call a race. I like a bit of passion and excitement in a race call and we rarely get this anymore. Do other people think Matthew Jones and Mark Harrison are dull commentators?

I think Queensland has the best callers for capturing excitement, while a bloke in Victoria who can hardly get a gig due to an unfortunate incident a few years ago called Rick McIntosh should be used far more cos he's great as well. Terry McAuliffe is also very good in SA.

Who are the best and who are the worst racecallers at present?

Personally i like the guy from Wa in Darren MCCAULEY a good commentator who doesnt display predjuce to the horse he has backed unlike most.

On the Queensland commentators Wayne Wilson is my pick but not real strong in the tipping stakes.Alan Thomas the sky racing man you can always tell what he has backed but does make the race interesting.

cheers

i like the greyhound callers the best. Ron Hawkswell and Rob Testa are good. As for Gallops i would have to say Bryan Martyn and Wayne Wilson are the best, but most callers are really good.

I rate Terry McAuliffe and Greg Miles as the best two.

Ron Papps is useless. Whenever there are two or more horses in a photo you can always count on him stuffing it up. Thankfully he only gets a gig when there are a truckload of meetings on and he will be somewhere out bush.

Hilton Donaldson is also ordinary, I don't know how he made it to Hong Kong in 2002. He must have some photos of a Sky Channel exec.

BEST CALLERS:

1. Terry McAuliffe
2. Bryan Martin
3. Greg Miles
4. Darren McCauley
5. Dan Milecki
6. Wayne Wilson (poor Melbourne Cup Carnival a couple of years back though, for channel 7)

WORST CALLERS (There are a hell of a lot of them)

- Crettenden
- Blackmore (the worst)
- Markovic (not far off Blackmore)
- Shillington
- Papps
- Donaldson
- Fuller
- Testa
- Jacques
- Bailey
- Thomas
- Craig
- Jones
- Harrison

Right on the money there. Thank goodness Shillington only calls Horsham Dogs.

Bryan Martin's the worst. His completely biased call on Fields of Omagh in the Cox Plate this year was absolutely woeful. It single-handedly ruined what was probably the best race of the last decade.

Unless you backed FOO of course ;)

Oink !!!

Can`t stand Bryan Martin, find him very arrogant, collingwood fan as well. Do not like Milecki. Ian Craig is my favourite, good voice , nice turn of phrase. Paul Abresoli calls the Sydney dish lickers, great voice.
Also like Wayne Wilson, yes , he had a shocker when in Melbourne, but a very stylish caller, one of the best. Agree with others re , Macauley, top caller. Greg Miles would be Melbourne`s best i.m.o

To emphasise Lachlan McIntosh's incredible incompetence, I refer you to a call just a few minutes ago at the Victorian country trots.
The leader was well clear in the straight and he said Mardinova had ran past the tiring Long Row to get to second.
Then when they hit the line a second later, remarkably Long Row has run second.
One of my pet hates!
He is an absolute disgrace and his calls give you little idea of what is actually unfolding.

The older members on this board might remember a guy called Jack Styring used to call around the bush ,probably the Rex Hunt of racecallers .Some of his comments in the race were hilarious.
Rember one day when he said that a horse was so far back they would have to leave the lights on the track on so it could finish.

cheers

I can tell you Jack is still calling races - some 50 years after he started his career. I think he calls Balnarring Picnics, Avoca Non-Tab, Hanging Rock Non-Tab and Gunbower Non-Tab plus trails at Cranbourne.

Absolute entertainer with his calling...favourite quotes "you could keep up with these on a tricycle" and "races up on the outside of the leader quicker than you can say Bob's your uncle". Has the real racecallers voice as well. Not the most accurate caller sometimes, but at the right meetings (country non-tabs where atmosphere is a highlight) he is great.

I've been down to Balnarring a few times, and Jack was calling then, he's very entertaining.

Some of his other famous lines are: "Coming down at a hundred miles and hour" and "Baring his mollers to the breeze".

One of the times that I was down at Balnarring, he received the Balnarring Racing Club personality of the year. If you ever get a chance to go down there, make sure you do, because the bloke is sensational.
