Reading Mr Q's fabulous website...and I encourage people to visit as its a real shrine to West Coast.. I noticed Jasons Ball's name and it occured to me, and maybe I am wrong, that it has not been often that we lost when we traded a player.

However we may have lost on a Jason Ball trade, does anyone remember what we got in return, and what ever we gave up for Michael Prior was way too much.

Can anybody remember a trade that we ended up getting shafted on?

Eagles have not been burnt to date.

Traded Jason Ball in 1999 to Syd for Draft picks #11 ( Darren Glass) & #41(Kane Munro)
2000 traded Draft Pick 27 Fof Prior to Essendon ,who drafted Ted Richards with.

So while not all trades have been winners we have not had a tonsil tickler yet.

Correct.

2000 Fraser Gehrig traded to Saint Kilda for Draft Pick 18 ( Daniel Kerr) and Sierakowski.

lost out on Sira , however won big time with Kerr. Therefore total trade a break even or a long term win.

dale kickett traded to Fitzroy in 1990 for pick 78 which was used to select some fella by the name of dean harding
-tim watson selection 13 1992
-shane sikora selection 12 1994
-brendon fewster selection 3 1995
-jaxon crabb selection 12 1997
-brandon hill selection 10 1998

The Eagles sent Dale Kickett to St. Kilda in 1992.

He was an Eagle in 1991.

Not that I think we really lost out losing Dale Kickett regardless, but that's just me.

You make a valid point about the draft picks we used, however the post is acutually referring to trades we made. I agree that at times we had not drafted as well as we could have.

Cheers

Agree. Infact we traded for a need and we won a Grada Final. Trades cannot be more successful then that. From my recollection we needed a a second more mobile ruckman hence the trade and Greg Harding wanted to come home.

Schofield is a tough case.

He was definately tradeable at the time and we definately needed Scott Cummings . Scotty did win the Coleman in 1999 and I don't think we really need Schoey right now - that said, he would have been nice in the dark days (2000-2001) when he was playing good football for Port.

Not many players have left the Eagles and gone on to strong careers elsewhere.

Dean Laidley is one that jumps to mind - but he was no better than McKenna, Hart, Waterman or Worsfold in our defense so that was no great loss.

Jason Ball has done well at Sydney but has also been plagued by injury. We knew Jase was a good player when letting him go - but he was in bad need of a change of venue.

Matt Clape played good football in the at the Blues but didn't last for too long.

We perhaps lost out on trading away Shane Bond and Brayden Lyle for a 4th round draft selection (Trent "Sue The Eagles" Cummings) - but I don't doubt that the deal played a role in securing the picks for Gardiner along with Downsborough.

Craig Smoker (!) and Andrew Williams (likely) jump to mind as short term success at new clubs.

I'm confident we have won out on the deals trading away Watters, Turley, Hynes, Godden etc

While broken even on White, Metropolis and a few others.

Theres probably a few obvious ones I'm forgetting in there though.

Hope that covers it.

Oh yeah and Gehrig is doing well at the Saints now but he too really needed a new club.

We were VERY lucky to get Kerr in that deal, had we drafted poorly we would have been badly burnt instead of breaking even.

Knee injuries or not, I never rated Seirakowski, he was a average player who struggled for a game the majority of a time in an average team.

I don't think we've really even been badly r*ped in a trade, although a few of the Judge trades we're quite ordinary.

100% AGREE!

I also remember at the time being very pi@@ed at the return that we gor for Gehrig.

Siera was really good the year before he came to the Eagles I thought. I was hoping we would draft him. He took so many tough marks, I really liked the look of him.

These were draft picks not trades, but yes they were very poor ones. Fortunately the recruiting manager responsible for these no longer works at the Eagles.
