For a while now I have thought about how certain clubs butcher draft after draft and as a result there really are no consequences as they keep getting another crack which imo has to change. Clubs like Richmond and Melbourne over the last 10 years have failed to develop so many promising youngsters but there is no accontability because if your picks don't turn out well, it doesn't matter due to the fact that you can get more top picks in the next draft. All of our clubs have chosen high draft picks in the past that haven't turned out well so I am not having a go at any particular club. Anyway I propose that over a period of time (say 10 years), clubs can only have a ceration amount have Top 5 draft picks.... or something similar. If you do poorly in drafts, it should be on the club.

Thoughts?

(obviously I haven'y created a perfect blueprint but it is just an idea)

There are consequences like Saintsfreak said above as well as the Talent Identification staff being reviewed on their drafting choices.

Having people unable to draft good players with top picks also is a consequence for them since there are 'better' players picked up by the other clubs at later picks.

If you want to reach the pick of your draft then probably encourage all the members to do good on every activity you have for in this case you will likely be closed to your aim.

I think after the blunders of very high draft picks like Dowler, Thorp and Ellis, you should be supporting the system that allowed you to land Franklin and Roughead.

Isn't that how it is currently?

If a team drafts poorly, who else is it "on"?

I'd like to hear your explanation of why we have a draft system in the first place.

These kinds of whinges suggest it's like Wheel of Fortune, and for some players to get more spins than others is inherently unfair.

Again, I'd like to hear why you think we have a draft in the first place.

I just think the idea of punishing a club because they picked or developed a player poorly is like double jeopardy. It's like cutting off someone's arm then beating them to death with it.

BF is unreasonably harsh on clubs who have recruited high draft picks that have delivered disappointing results. Top 10 picks, a young player is expected to become a superstar, and when they fall short, as some will do, the recruiting department is labeled as a failure.

How often does a club select a player with a top 5 (or top 10) selection that isn't highly rated by the "recruiting fraternity"? Even amateur phantom drafts are a close match with the top 10 players actually selected.

My point is that the top players in the draft are well known, and agreed upon, as being the the best young players in the country. Sometimes they don't improve enough to be a gun AFL player and get overtaken by players selected later.

Good drafting requires a measure of luck and fortune telling , (and good recruiter skill to improve the odds ;) ). Judge the success or failure of a recruiting department by looking beyond the first 10 picks.
