If the news is true (broken pelvis 3 places = outta action next yr) he would still surely be worth the chance if he fell thru to pick 20 or maybe 36??

Thoughts...

Terrible news for that kid.

Doesn't really suit Carlton in that he's a Leading Full Forward type in the Fevola mode... and well, we have one of those. I read a few places that he's a Centre Half Forward, but I can't say I was as impressed with him in that position, as opposed to closer to goal.

I was all for getting him if we traded Fevola, but I don't really see the point now. Insurance maybe.

too risky for us to consider with our early picks..........if still available late in the draft, I'd be willing to take a punt on him then.

Just because he spent his junior football career playing as a forward, does that not mean he can't be trained to play as a defender. Most talented kpp footballers can play in either the forward line or the back line. Stephen Silvagni started his career as a forward and so did Glen Archer. I know they are freak players but a player who is touted to go top ten must have a fair bit of talent and if he is to slip through to later in the draft we would have to be ridiculously stupid to pass up an opportunity with him.

With Pick 36, I would take a punt due to the shallowness of this years draft but in my opinion, he could still go reasonably high if his injury is recoverable as most teams are recruiting for the future and not for next year

Luke Livingston played alll of his junior footy as a forward as well!!

Better off drafting KPP defenders and let them develop in those positions rather than asking a natural forward to learn how to play as a defender.

No, I would not pick him simply because of two reasons:

(a). He is one player that we don't need at Carlton, as in position wise. I cannot see him fitting in at all in the current forward line structure particularly with Setanta coming on board for next year as well.

(b). Too much of a risk

End result = why pick him?

would draft him only if he decides he will play on id say pick 36 would b worth it , i know its very bad news the crash and all but if he decides to play on then that is fantastic news for carlton if they can get him at pick 36 because a top 10 player gets injured and then no team will get him but he will get over his injury and play good

This is very much a Courtney Johns situation. The pelvis is one of the worst places a player can have a break as it affects every action in footy. It's not like I'm not high on this guy, before this injury I said we should take him at 4 if we traded Fevola.

If you're a top club, you can afford to have thses type of guys as 'project players', Carlton doesn't really have this option as every player on its list needs to have some level of certainty of playing senior football.

Pick 36 is somewhat a speculative pick, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable selecting Dowler even at that position.

He doesn't give any indication that he has any other skills beyond being a leading forward at this stage, either.

Well, the injury is 6 weeks to 3 months according to afl.com.au
well if its only a 6 week - 3 months then id say pick him with pick 36 but it all depends on how bad the injury is if he can recover from it and continue with football then yes i would pick him

Don't forget we picked up Walker off a knee operation which (if i remember correctly) meant he didn't do a proper pre-season.

Like it's been said. You draft players on what they'll be like in 3-4 years, not what their debut season will be like.

Do you think we were even looking at Dowler at four? I don't believe Macca69's rumour that we were chasing him since most predict he'd go in the bottom half of the top ten.I don't think we need another leading forward with with Waite, Fisher, Fev, Deluca and Lance on the list.

That's exactly what I said, and believe. He is one player that we do not NEED, we have much bigger holes to fill before the forward line and he is too similar to players we already have....I'd punt on Wayde Mills or Jessie White with pick 36 than Dowler

Crash sidelines top-10 draft prospect

Oakleigh Chargers forward Beau Dowler - one of the most sought after prospects in this year's NAB AFL Draft - has been involved in a car accident.

The 17-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed on Friday.

Dowler has suffered a stress fracture to his pelvis and is recovering in a Melbourne hospital.

so how did anyone come up with broken pelvis in 3 places ????

its obviously the first and fourth selections for each year. Anyway yeah i would take Dowler with Selection 20, but thats the highest i would wish Carlton to use. A top class side can afford a project player more then we can at the moment.

I read the local newspaper here in dandenong... Seems like a good kid with an excellent attitude... WE need good kids with this ....

Hes a team player too....

If hes still around at 36 id take him....

I think we need at least picks 1 and 4 to be used on potential superstars who are injury free ie

1) murphy
2) Hurn, kennedy, ryder

Mike

Dowler tested very well at draft camp and was the quickest of the top KPP prospects (Ryder, Kennedy and Clark).

Ran 3.04 for the 20m and 13.7 for the beep test. Grown 3cms and is 195cms now. Would have been in the top 10 easily and will drop a few spots but not many.

Anything can happen with this draft and we might get very lucky with our pick 20 and someone falls through to it.

I think he'll be well and truly gone by 36. A 6 to 12 week injury isn't that bad, and by the time the draft comes around, he'll already have had 5 weeks worth of recovery.

A surgeon said in the Age yesterday that he expects Beau to make a full recovery.

Having said all of that, if he somehow makes it to #36, i'd be more than happy to pick him up. Gives us some insurance should we decide down the track to of-load Fevola.
