Does anybody else do this. I have been trying for about two months on my computer, but after picking up a pen and writing on paper for about two weeks, i really couldn't help but notice i am improving. I've probably written up 10 decent songs, 2 very good ones, and 10 rubbish ones. Of course using them in a band would be interesting.

i guess it's natural to get better as you continue along. i've always loved the idea of writing myself, but gave up all too easily. perhaps because i would get drunk at night whilst writing then the following morning wonder what the hell i was thinking :p

in any case, good luck with future writing/performing

It was crazy a few nights ago i woke up at about 2am and just wrote a song in under 20 minutes then went back to bed. It was just different because iv been trying to write for a while and done nothing then all of a sudden it just came out.

I've never been able to write lyrics (or poetry) on a computer.

Paper and pen is a must have, if only for the fact that I sometimes have about 10 versions of the one line and I need to have them all there to see which one fits the best.

That, and I draw little pictures to go with the song, write notes about what the mood of the line should be.

Once it's all done, then put them on the PC, but only once its done.

Here's an odd one.

I write charts quite well, and don't have much trouble with poetry either. So why is writing lyrics posing a great problem? Has for years.

May be because I've always relied on others to do it, and it's never been asked of me. But I have three charts finished right now in the rnb mould, that are only needing lyrics, and I keep drawing a blank.

You're McCartney. You need to find your Lennon :p

Iv'e written some good ones over the years but as I don't have an interest in being in a band they just end up in the bin.

I think often the stlye of music you listened to growing up could have an influence on understanding how to write and structure good lyrics.

Listening to XTC as a youngster will be a better base to start from than say Spice Girls.

I write lyrics been doing it for years. I have like over 50 songs on my computer lol It's a past time I do I guess they're mainly about my feelings or issues in the world here's an example it's called History Lesson.

History Lesson

V1.
We’re in a war that we can’t win
Longer line of next in kin
There’s no time for remorse
We’re on a kamikaze course
But we find it kinda cool
Cause we don’t know what to do
It ain’t fun and games
Sit back and let me proclaim Yeah!

Chorus
We’ve seen it before
Bodies washed upon the shore
Why does history repeat itself?
We’re born to be withheld
Our identities are killed
Why does history repeat itself?

V2.
With the war of Vietnam
It wasn’t lead by Uncle Sam
There was no time for choice
but the hippies had a voice
Communism was the enemy
But more so insecurity
corrupt soldiers gaining fame
Sit back and let me proclaim Yeah!

Chorus

Bridge
Those days were forgettable
We learnt to live with shame
Desensitized children
Slowly going insane!

V3.
Has my point come across?
Is anybody lost?
I didn’t mean to scare
Just want people to care
Respect for friend or foe
That’s how things should go
We should be all ashamed
Sit back and let me proclaim Yeah!

Chorus
