It's interesting that Ken Wyatt recieved the smallest swing towards him of all the WA Liberal candidates* (+1.45%). This is much less than most WA Liberals recieved.

* Does not include Wilson Tuckey.

Insiders was saying this morning that one of the common diatribes he is recieving is "If I knew you were an abo, I'd have never voted for you...."

Compulsory voting, eh.....

I think it's fair to say that the people sending these letters would be in the minority. Every place has them unfortunately.

But, nonetheless, it's an unfortunate fact that his Indigenous heritage would have had some negative impact during the campaign. I used to drive by a large billboard of him which I am sure had been photoshopped, or at least designed, to make his features look similar to that of an Anglo Australian.

That said, I'm sure his Indigenous heritage would also have attracted votes from some people. Some would be proud to be the first to elect an Indigenous Australian to the lower house.

Julie Bishop having a crack at racism and intolerance was a bit much.

After Abbott's spent the best part of 6 months telling us that he'll stop the boats and the Real Julia telling us that being worried about immigrants taking our job isn't racist is it any wonder every dumb redneck in the country now thinks racism and intolerance is ok?

Wyatt's treatment is disgusting, but a result of the so-called 'leadership' we're getting.

Sadly, that's all too true

Ken looks pretty white even in person. He could pass for an islander very easily

Yep. We have become a far less tolerant country in recent years. It's very sad.

If my anecdotal evidence is anything to go by, I'd say that people in Sydney these days display a lot more passive and overt racism and intolerance than Brisbane. Just my observations having come back to Australia and the reception my gf and I have received. Perth, for what it's worth, has its fair share of rednecks but most people were friendly and accommodating. But, then again many Sydneysiders these days are just arseholes to anyone who isn't their friend.

Sydney's largely become a bitter, miserable place with an us versus them mentality, far less friendly than any other place in Australia. I blame several factors for the marked drop in quality of life over the past 10 years: poor planning and governance; too much competition of jobs, houses, seats on the train etc.; lack of efforts to introduce decentralisation to take the stress of extra peopl; talkback radio bigots fanning the flames and playing the race card (hello Alan Jones) and divisive politics.

For what it's worth I'm a born and bred Sydneysider, but in many ways the city is not a pleasant place to live these days unless you are wealthy and I'd recommend any major city other than Sydney to settle these days.

Yeah, after all the ALP put up their Nth indigenous candidate in a winnable seat, after having so many elected to the House of Reps already, showing they walk the walk instead of just spinning shit. Oh wait ....

I'm confused as to what the ALP has to do with it?

i dont have a issue with stopping the boats, why should these people jump the que, immigration is good for the country but it must come through the correct channels:thumbsu:

Thats WA for you with QLD not far behind in the racism stakes.

thats a very ignorant statement, having lived in Sydney 2005-07 i can tell you racism lives very well throughout NSW. and other parts of this wonderful country we call Australia.
