Xavier Ellis has been returned to the team replacing rookie Cameron Stokes in the Preliminary Final team to play against St Kilda on Saturday 20.09.08.

This will be X mans first final for 2008. Ellis was omitted for the first final against the Bulldogs, being replaced by the teams most experienced player Shane Crawford.

Hawthorn recall the X-factor

  • HAWTHORN has recalled skilful midfielder Xavier Ellis for tomorrow night's preliminary final against St Kilda.
Ellis, who played all but one game in the home-and-away season before being dumped for the qualifying final against Western Bulldogs, comes in for Cameron Stokes.
The Hawks said last night that teenage goalsneak Stokes had hamstring tightness.
But the hard-luck story remains ruckman Simon Taylor, who was again left out in favour of Brent Renouf.
As reported in the Herald Sun on Tuesday, Taylor could miss a Hawthorn premiership simply because he stepped aside for the good of the team.
The Hawks went to Taylor in the lead-up to Round 22, asking if he was willing to have a rest.
Taylor obliged, taking the chance to freshen up, but the Hawks have taken a liking to Renouf's hard edge.
Taylor, who played 42 of a possible 47 games before his untimely rest, faces an uphill battle to get back in.
Full-back Stephen Gilham was named as an emergency, raising speculation he could be a late replacement for Trent Croad, who has been battling a foot injury.
Gilham played every game of the home-and-away season before a virus kept him out of the win against the Dogs.
Midfielder Chance Bateman retained his spot in the line-up despite rolling an ankle at training on Tuesday.
Hawthorn had a light training session on the MCG yesterday morning.

The Age wrote 28.09.08 about Xavier Ellis's 2008 Grand Final performance.

By Tony Shaw

" He had 28 possessions, he played above his age. I like the way goes about, could be a leader of the club down the track."

"gave him a score of 8 out of 10 - just behind Luke Hodge & Gary Ablett on 9 each"

21 kicks
7 handballs
14 marks
5 Inside 50's
2 Held tackles
3 critical errors
Awarded 2 Free kicks and gave none away

4 - 1st possesions at a stoppage
4 - 1st effective disposals from stoppage

Scored 1 goal at the 10 minute 50 sec mark.

2 - score assists

Spent 76% of the total game time on the ground. Started on the bench.

With Trent Croad (foot - 2nd Qrt) and Clinton Young (ankle -3rd) off the Hawks bench reduced to 2 fit players so players like X had to spend longer on the ground than may have been planned.

Xavier Ellis' 28 disposal game in the 2008 was a career high for disposals.

Ellis to miss pre-season cup

2009 Season

By Luke Holmesby

4:23 PM Fri 28 November, 2008

HAWTHORN youngster Xavier Ellis is likely to miss the entire pre-season cup after undergoing hip surgery.

Hawthorn confirmed on Friday that Ellis had an operation to repair cartilage in his hip and would be confined to rehabilitation before taking up light jogging for the next six to eight weeks.

Hawthorn’s football operations manager Mark Evans said Ellis would miss the pre-season competition, but that his availability for round one would depend on the speed of his recovery.

Ellis had carried a hip injury into the 2008 finals series and only decided to have it operated on after the soreness continued when he began pre-season training.

Ellis was dropped for the Hawks’ first final against the Western Bulldogs but came back to play a significant role in the preliminary final against St Kilda.

A week later he was Hawthorn’s highest possession winner in the grand final against Geelong, with 28 disposals and 14 marks.

After watching the grandfinal and seeing how this kid stepped up to the plate and played what i believe is the best game in his career to date on the big stage i believe this kid will be an out and out star

Hows he travelling with his injury, has he started any sort of light jogging yet ?? and is he any chance for round 1??

I love the kid, he's simply a quicker, tougher Dal Santo!!

repair the cartliedge in the hip doesnt sound like much how long do these injuries usually take??

Last I heard he was still on crutches, but that would have to be two weeks ago now. I have absolutely no idea how he is going now, but you would think perhaps he'd be held back a little from playing to complete a reasonable pre-season so that lack of fitness doesn't hurt him all year?

Anyone hawk supporter give an update on Xav?? Whats he now doing at training ?? any running or anything. Still has over a month to get right. But 4 weeks of running may see him struggle early in the season with fitness.

Ellis injury not serious

Scans have cleared Hawthorn's Xavier Ellis of serious damage to his foot from the incident that forced the midfielder out of yesterday's match against North Melbourne, but the onballer is still unlikely to be available for Saturday's game against Port Adelaide.

A Hawthorn spokesman today revealed that Ellis had sustained a medium grade foot strain but had not suffered a fracture of the foot or shin. He said the club would assess the injury further in the coming days.

Has there been any update on X's injury? Ive heard heaps of different reports - some say 2 weeks, some a month and one person said he has the moon boot on and will be out for 8!

Do we have anything concrete on when he is expected to return?

I saw X man at training today. Tuesday 21st April 2009

I heard on the radio last weekend..might have been 774 ABC that quote 'Ellis was in a moonboot 24 hours a day for the next 4 weeks and had to wear the boot even in bed.'

Well let me assure you NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

Most definately NOT in a Moon Boot.

Spent his time walking around the Waverley Park oval with rehab co-ordinator Alex Clarke as his companion. He even went for a very short but still significant jog from point post to end goal post and then back to walking.

Having said that I think they will still play it safe with him but so far so very very good :thumbsu:

Thats encouraging news, cheers for that Rusty. Hopefully he can get back on the park soon, need his poise badly at the moment. :thumbsu:
