The upcoming season for Xavier 1sts is full of promise and expectation. With a good mixture of talent from last year's yr 11 firsts players and fringe seconds players who are making the step up, and a keen and skillful batch of 10's and 11's this year, the Xavs are expected to be right up there with your Haileburys and Scotchs who have recruited heavily. Pre-Season training so far has turned in many pleasing results with 95% of yr 12's training this year getting 14+ in the beep test and 90% getting sub 4 and 1/2 secs in the 30 meter sprint. Whilst the younger fellas results havent been as good as the 12's, they are certainly following very closely behind.

Players to watch for this year:

David Cooper - Boarder who play in the boarder's XVIII last year and dominated. Has made the step up this year and has been in the top bracket for the beep test and 30 meter sprint. Silky skilled midfielder who is in a similar mould to Jimmy Bartel of Geelong.

Tyson Thomas - Son of Ex Saints coach Grant and beautifully balanced and skilled midfielder. Was unlucky not to get a gig in the 1st's last year but has been training the house down. Fitness and speed is in the top bracket also and also showed last year that he can go forward and kick a goal.

Ryan Craig - New boarder fresh from Wangaratta where he won the Wangaratta Rover's 3rds B&F as a bottom aged player in his first year. Is a tough as nails midfielder who is skilled on both sides of the body and has good pace breaking speed that will see him hard to catch over the first 20 meters. Can also play in defence or as a tagger. A bottom aged player with big expectations on him.

Louis Baird - Touted by many last year as the 'forgotten ruckman'. There are many questions currently hanging over louis' commitment and fitness and some have written him off as a player of little value. However his Clarke Keating-esque appraoch to the game and ability to push forward and kick a goal make him a valuable commodity in a side where alot of the height will come from the inexperienced yr 11 group. If he commits himself and takes the initiative upon himself he should get a regular game in the ruck. But should he fall short then the Xavs will have to look to spring heeled height e.g. Luke Santilli, instead of Baird's Strength and bullocking power.

Ben Kennedy - Another prodigy out of the successful Kennedy clan. Ben played with great poise and skill in his handful of games last year and cemented a regular spot towards the end of last year. Blessed with solid hands and good leg speed, Ben is able to use his versatility to plug any holes in the side. His height enables him to play forward, back or have stints in the ruck, whilst his speed means that he is also a possible option for rotation through the middle. Will most likely hold down a key spot in defence, CHB being the more likely option, but may be used as a pinch hitter in the ruck at various stages. Being only a year 11 and somewhat experienced campaigner, Ben's leadership is also another string to his bow and could see him as skipper in 2008.

Nick Wynne - "Goose" or "Gilligan" as he is known, will be perhaps the most important player for the Xavs this year. After finishing 2nd in the B&F last year, Wynne is a short favourite to win the spot as skipper for the upcoming season and will be expected to lead from the front. Will most likely hold down CHF and is so will provide the opposition with plenty of headaches. Extremely quick and agile for his size, Nick has a solid pair of hands and unflappable work rate. His body strength will also be a key weapon, having maxed out at 94kg on the bench during pre-season testing. If Wynne can have a big year and kick goals regularly, the Xavs will be a fair chance against anyone.

These are just my observations anyhow. Anyone else know of any players who need to be watched?

Matt Sheil year 11, near to perfect skills on both sides of his body only thing against him is his height, it will be a joke if he is not picked in the 1st this year, Kind of in the mold of Nathan Foley from Richmond

Year 11's player 1sts will be Sam Lees, Big Ben, Noonan, Matt Shiel, Liam Grigg, Sam O'Sullivan and then a few more here or there, Xavier are a massive threat, also there is a certain 61 kilo mega monster there somewhere, watch out for him

Louis Baird? piece of schmit player, we got beta tall timber than that. I say give these year 11 boys that have been bringing home flags the last couple of years a run. Keep ur eye's on young James Ulbrick. don't like the kid, but gotta hand it to him, he's got skills on the paddock. Give him a run in the ruck this year and he'll be unstoppable by year 12. Toby Gorman as a backup? maybe, but santilli will be in the mix as well.
midfield looks solid and am excited to c how ryan craig goes. built like a brick **********house and a deadly right foot, will be hard to beat.

haha fair enough. I think Louis will get the gig though because of his experience, size and fitness. And Ryan will have a good year although he is hardly built like a brick ********house haha.

Good sess this morning, the other APS teams have got to be concerned with some of the strength and skill of the players, Darcy Booth, possible captain? Matt Shiel has found his touch, gun

Good signs from the intra-club match on Thursday night. Louis Baird showed some of the talent he has kept hidden with his work in the ruck and strong marking around the ground. James Ulbrick and Toby Gorman also showed good signs when rucking. Matt Shiels played a good game however was unmanned most of the time. David Cooper showed dash and poise off a back flank whilst Matt Skidmore also put in a blinder from a back flank and periods on the ball. Tim Agius was also strong up forward with his marking and darkhorse Sam Elliott played a stellar game up forward, finding lots of space and setting up 3 or more goals. Could be a smokey for a regular forward position?

There are only two teams in the race this year.

One is Scotch, who I think will win it. The other is the sleeping giant Xavier.

Scotch will belt MGS in round 1, no doubt. Xavier will flex their muscle against GC and Caulfield in their first two matches. Then the premiership will be decided in Round 4. Why? Did any see the first final last year? Xavier lost by 4 points in a nailbiter that was decided by a goal umpiring error in the last minute. Many think the return of Josh Kennedy fixed XC and lets face it - he was exceptional that day. The Roche is a difficult ground to master (they play the good sides there), and they had 3 Yr 10s and 9 Yr 11s playing against Scotch in that final.

Several of those young players were influential in the outcome. Wynne took Sherwin out of the game. Kennedy Jnr burnt 4 opponents. Daniher kicked a couple, Sanfillipo murdered them on the wing and Booth broke even with Nick Smith. Add those names to Lees, Noonan, O'Sullivan, Grigg, Ryan Sweeney, Thomas, Armstrong and Hannebery (best Yr 10 since Luke Ball) and Houston we have a problem.

I went to that game along with lots of other Scotch people and we expected another whitewash. By half time we realised that a) they had done their homework on us and b) they were going to be better in 2007. They have John Kennedy (Haw), Matt Hannebery (WB) and Ian Aitken (Carl) coaching them now and I know that they have been doing preseason for ages. Most schools started training a few weeks ago - these guys have been doing 3,4 sessions a week for a couple of months. Instead of putting money into scholarships - its pretty obvious where their cash has gone! Infra-structure to support their already strong football culture. Damn it they have a dozen blokes who are sons of AFL legends! Daniher, Kennedy, Wynne (uncle won a brownlow), Armstrong, Thomas, O'Sullivan, Ambrose, Hannebery etc...

New recruits

Hachem (Yr 11 - son of Poker Joe from Northern Knights) bought his way into Xavier and can seriously play.
Craig (Yr 11 - Wangaratta) Fast, skilled rover who dominated at Senior level.

My ratings are as follows:

1. Scotch - Still strong despite a number of star Yr 12s moving on. Pace and marking power!
2. Xavier - Were an extremely young squad last year and have acquired several new stars in Yr 11.

3. Haileybury - Rely heavily on their key Yr 11s, but will not cope with the depth of the top two.
4. Caulfield - Dark horse of the comp. Big, fit and have recruited heavily.
5. MGS - Have match winners but have a horror draw with Scotch and HC early

6. Carey - Impressive forward line, but will bleed goals at the other end against good sides
7. GC - Incredible year last year with a 'once in 50 yrs list according to DC'. Will be competitive.
8. Skevs - Top 5 as good as any. Bottom 5 wouldn't sell on ebay for 0.01 including shipping.

9. BGS - Where have the glory days gone. Wait.... there were glory days?
10. WC - An exceptional Yr 11 list, but no bookends. Schwabby had them playing a good brand.
11. GGS - Actually on the improve - but then so have the Bangladesh cricket side and will still get belted.

hey guys, what year is that Pash kid in???. I hear he is a pretty good player up and coming. Can you tell me a little about him please.

Pasceri is in Yr 10.
Quick and skillful, 2nd in B & F last year to Hannebery.
His brother kicked 10 in an APS game in '99
He plays at Northern Knights.

I've heard about a dozen of the XC squad play TAC cup.
These are the ones I know.

Knights - Sanfillipo, Pasceri, Hachem
Chargers - Wynne, O'Sullivan, Daniher
Sandringham - Kennedy, Noonan, Lees

Hannebery turned Chargers down. I'm involved there and they were keen to get him. He won't need to play TAC cup to get drafted though that kid just like Ted Richards, Jobe Watson and Luke Ball.

I notice no-one from Xavs have posted their possible lineup.
Any direction from your coaches not too?

Info from around the East Hawthorn district says this is pretty close to your best:

Back Craig (11) Noonan (11) Ryan (12)

Halfback Hachem (11) Kennedy (11) Lees (11)

Centre O'Sullivan (11) Booth (12) Buckley (12)

Halfforward Thomas (12) Wynne (12) Santilli (12)

Forward Daniher (11) Sweeney (12) Hannebery (10)

Ruck Ulbrick (11) Sanfillipo (12) Shiel (11)

Bench Coluccio (11) Romanin (12) Grigg (11)

Squad Pasceri (10) Curran (12) Ellis (12)
Hanger (12) Ambrose (11) Rowse (12)
Evans (12) Baird (12) Armstrong (12)

A fast, skillful side who should be fit with early preseason.
Height is the big query though. You'll struggle to hold teams like Caulfield, Carey and Scotch who have quality tall forwards.

Top 6 - Kennedy, Sanfillipo, Wynne, Booth, Craig, Hannebery

Not too sure why Carey are up so high... From what I've heard and seen there forward line is pretty intense, but as Davo stated, their back line is incredibly weak.

If a team gets on top of them during a match, I think they'll find it very difficult to get back in it.
