Always a big fixture in the APS with a lot of history and passion behind it, driven by two very proud (and rightly so) catholic schools. i've tasted my fair shair of vitriole in regards to this fixture over the years, so i'll leave any hostility to other people from the two respective schools.

basically for those who don't know the context of this match, it is now thirteen seasons since st kevin's last beat xavier in football (1996). they are no doubt the bogey school for skevs. on the flip side, skc comes off a premiership year while xavier probably their worst footy performance in several decades.

the match is to be played at Xavier on the 22nd of May at 2pm.
what are people's predictions/comments on the match, its attendance and its likely outcome?

skevs and xavas, have your say here.

SKC 12.7.79 def XC 8.13.61
Conway kicked 5 for Skevs and Gleeson with 3

Conway sent off for striking( whichi he did!) but was punched several times by no 6.

The poor old Xavs guys didn't cope too well with losing.

It must be really killing them to see skevs superior both academically( did you see their results last year??) and football wise.

And to think they charge 6k more..for what?

It was always going to be hard for Xavier to win yesterday especially with the pressure of fourteen years on their shoulders, a superior St Kevin's team opposing them (most of whom had learnt a harsh lesson in this fixture the previous year) and the SKC army in full voice (there would have been more than one thousand people there yesterday (both schools combined) supporting this match. It was actually quite massive.

It would be disappointing to Xavier that their last redeeming quality as a school has been usurped by St Kevin's. SKC has out-performed them in every way for the past decade except for head-to-head matches in football and with that final box now ticked, the SKC hierachy must be scratching their heads thinking "so what now...?" Indeed yesterday afternoon constituted the final frontier for skevs as a school and the last remnant of the "Old Xavier" everyone had come to despise but respect.

Skevs will look forward now, secure in themselves as the premier catholic school in Victoria-a right they have earned the hard way: not through fees and advertising but through sheer results and the fostering of a great culture at Moonga Road. Sportingly, culturally and academically they outperform their competitors year after year. What I am saying is based on facts not assertions.

Xavier can no longer afford to look to the past and must always look forward now. It is a great school that has perhaps gradually lost its way over the past decade- dwelling on the rich history (both academic and sporting) that it had earnt over the years. It can no longer assume its ability to produce winning football teams without importing players-obviously in moderation. It can no longer assume its right to attract the best and brightest catholic students with schools like St Kevin's competing against it. I am not foreshadowing some sort of judgement day for Xavier, simply pointing out a subtle change in attitude required for it to regain its place in Victoria as the state's premier catholic school- which I hope it can do.

Fierce competition between the two schools is a great thing- it brings out the best in both Xavier and St Kevin's and encourages them to continually develop themselves as schools-academically, culturally and sportingly. We saw what this competition was capable of producing yesterday- well over one thousand people (my personal estimate is 1200 [may be wrong]) were there yesterday to see that game. A fantastic effort which isn't often seen in APS football these days. It was a great sight and I commend both schools for their support and behaviour, which though at times fiercely passionate, was certainly in the spirit of the game.

Well said.
IT is hard to find an area where Xavier are superior to Skevs now and this is reflected in the relative " Brands" of the organisations. Skevs have a waiting list of over 6500, Xavier about 20% of that. Families are falling over themselves to get into St Kevins and are avoiding Xavier like the plague
Skevs has been consistenly beating them in VCE results for years, have won three of the past four APS athletics titles, the APS swimming title, the reigning APS foootball, soccer and rugby champions....I am struggling to find where Xavs have beaten them in anything? Debating perhaps?

To see the Xavier hordes invade the ground at half time with the false bravado, was actually embarassing for their school. What did the st kevins supporters do? Looked on and stayed off the ground.
With a revamped admin, hopeully they can gradually lift their standard to compete with a St Kevin's and return to their former glory days

You forgot the Football scholarships though...

no your right. Sorry. It was the football scholarships.

The foootball scholarships helped them smash Xavier in the VCE results five years in a row and saw them ranked no 1 in the APS for scores over 40 whilst Xavier was ranked sixth.

Yep, the good old football scholarships did all that and helped them win the soccer, aths, the swimming and the rugby.

Look, I hate Xavier as much as any - chasing us down Glenferrie Rd and chucking eggs at us on muck-up day is so really really funny.

This is a Footy Board though - so I was jsut making Footy comments.

You skevs boys are pretty quick to forget your past, you weren't much chop for a long time until a few big names appeared at your school, weather they are on scholarships or not is a different issue. And don't brag about your achievements in athletics and vce and the like because this is a footy discussion

mate the very reason everyone at skevs is so happy about their win is because of the past... they havent forgotten it and that is where all this emotion and meaning comes from.

Wel sorry, I would strongly argue that Skevs academic, athletics, swimming etc dominance is relevent as it is all part of their overall dominence of Xavier, which represents a total changing of the guard. You have to understand the past to appreciate the present

IT is explains why Xavier are having so much trouble dealing with the skevs juggernaut, as they used to dominate them in all the above mentioned areas.

Now Xavier simply charge a lot more and ....well...frankly...produce a lot less!

Don't be so harsh, they're retty good at making the news.

Boys boys...Great to hear the school boys got the chocolates against the old enemy...seems like they have a great culture of winning down there at the moment but show some humility please. 1 win after 13 straight losses needs to be enjoyed with a little perspective. Clearly Xavs are a great school (academically & sporting wise) that is what makes beating them great. Go Skevs.

Sorry MIO, Xavier is NOT a great school academically, they are a very poorly performing school for what they charge, ranked with the Mazenods of the world, with Mazenod around 15K cheaper.

Dont go to either school, but surely this is taking the piss??

St. Kevins will never be the premier catholic school, purely for the fact it has only been in existence for what? 70-80 years? There is no real history behind it...its a latecomer to the APS. No matter how many titles it wins or its academic results, it'll always be one of the "newbs" in the APS
