The AFL season has not started, but murmurs of a Victorian conspiracy already abound.

Particularly in South Australia, where eyebrows have been raised at the AFL scheduling all non-Victorian clubs to play each other in the opening round of the knockout pre-season cup.

Talkback radio has been bombarded by cynical callers suggesting a deliberate AFL ploy to reduce the chances of the pre-season cup being won by a non-Victorian club.

Only three of six non-Victorian clubs will progress after opening-round matches between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle, and Brisbane and Sydney...........

I think it's obvious why the fixtured it the way they did. Higher crowds....simple.

Port and Crows will get a bigger crows than say Crows and Freo here esp for a preseason game.

Freo and WC would get the same. as would all the Melb clubs playing eachother.

The AFL wants more money....simple.

It would be funny, if it were true.

I haven't heard it mentioned for months, and it isn't a Vic conspiracy until the 'tiser runs it, which it hasn't.

we "victorians" would rather the two SA sides met in the final, then follow it up with our sides playing an SA side in round 1.

I think it would've been more useful to have Freo vs Port, Adelaide vs West Coast in the first round, with one of those games being in Darwin, potentially setting up a local derby in the second round instead.

The Darwin/Cairns trips really should be done first up, IMO.

The link works just fine for me.

But FWIW, I've never bought into these alleged "non-Victorian clubs conspiracy theory" arguments.

Look, it's a national competition-- and the AFL wanted teams from outside Victoria to participate in a national competition. If there was such a conspiracy, the powers-that-be at the AFL wouldn't want the Adelaides, Brisbanes, West Coasters, etc., to even bother competing, and would have never let them into the competition at various points in time over the last 20 years in the first place.

This paranoia must stop, IMO... simple as that. Just be glad that the footy is back-- and embrace the regional derbies that are taking place this weekend.

This is the real reason-- having regional rivals going head-to-head against each other generates greater interest in a fledgling competition, and that's what the AFL wants.

The interstate teams do the majority of travel in the H&A and that cant be helped, so the wizard cup should be kinder on them to compensate.

I like SA teams, WA teams, Syd & Bris playing each other first round.
But the winners should get second round home grounds as well.

ie Winner of SA v a melbourne team in Adelaide.
Winner of WA v melbourne team in Perth
Winner of Syd & Bris v melbourne team in ... Canberra/Cairns

Then in the 3rd round, home games to interstaters if they are still left.

There will still be plenty of games in Melbourne.

Wasn't my link or post... it was Phat Side's.

Worked fine for me this morning, so his editorial work must be spot-on. :)

Cheers,

From a west coast perspective I think that it is a great piece of scheduling.

With the chance that my team will play on 1 pre-season game I'm guaranteed seeing them in the first round. It doesn't matter if the is an away game cause it's still at Subi.

Less travel for the team. Plenty of that ahead so a week off is welcome.

What better way to kick off the 2003 season than playing against Freo. Great work by Wayne Jackson and Co.

What they said - It's about the money. No surprises since the wizzer cup lost millions last year and wizzer won't up the sponsorship dollars

Who cares - I would have thought starting the seaon with derbies would help promote the game but realistically its only a practice match!

Saving unneccesary airfares would help as well. Collingwood seems to have played a lot of Wizzer games in Darwin, Perth, Brisbane, Cairns, etc.

Why is it when the Age publishes xenophobic articles from a victorian perspective, like how it is all victorians nightmare to have an all interstate grand final, it is easily dismissed by all here as being crap, yet when they print stuff about SAlians that doesn't reflect what we think, it is entirely believable?

I think you need a good lie down with a blanket and a hot chocolate.

Very valid point - this would be particularly relevant for the Perth teams and Brisbane who shoulder the most travel in any year.

Non-Vic teams shouldn't have to travel as much for "official" scratch matches either.

and vice versa?

Probably, but at least I realize it ;)

Do you realise their is no "Victorian" mentality when it comes to AFL football.

We would be happier to see Brisbane win 5 in a row than Collingwood win 1

That was my entire point.

I am told constantly there is no Victorian mentality despite the Victorian papers often talking about it.

Yet I am told there is an SAlian mentality because the Victorian papers talk about it.

I'd rather see the crows bottom than Collingwood.

I fail to see any basis for these conspiracy theories. There are three second round spots guaranteed for non-Victorian clubs. Why is this a problem? The alternate extreme - where non-Vic clubs all play Vic clubs - would mean anywhere from 0 to 6 non-Vic clubs progress, which - wait for it - averages 3! The Age just make themselves look stupid for publishing this uninformed rubbish.

Get a life.
More garbage from the victorian press who think they are important enough to actually care about over here.

While I reckon it's a good suggestion, you'll probably find certain interstaters accusing the AFL of Vic bias, through the twisted logic of the Interstate teams not being given a fair chance to getting used to combining long travel with playing footy!!
