XXXX or VB?

I'd really only gotten into VB in the year or so before I left Melbourne for Brisbane. Heard bad things about XXXX Gold but was pleasantly surprised when I first gave it a go up here. Haven't had anything to drink in 12 days now (yep, that's an achievement for me), but the following article interested me.

Apparently XXXX Gold only took over VB in the past 12 months. Surely I didn't make that much of a difference?

:stern look

Agreed. The couple of times I've had XXXX Gold I've found it's one of the better macro beers on offer, behind only Boags and maybe Toohey's. Then again I'm not particularly fussy and will drink just about any beer :D

What I don't get is how people drink Carlton. Easily the most feral beer I've ever had the misfortune of drinking, and the only beer I actually can't drink. Tastes metallic or something. Just disgusting... VB isn't that much better, and clearly Victoria was outside taking a piss when they were giving out state beers.

Also do people not drink full strength XXXX up in Qld?

On topic XXXX>>>>VB>>>>>>>>Carlton.

It is odd. There is a XXXX Red which is full-strength, but I barely ever see anybody drinking it. It is expensive, too: a slab of XXXX Gold (which is only mid-strength) costs about the same up here as a slab of VB does down there, while the Red costs about another $10 on top of that.

Beer prices here are (were?) a grievance of mine.

I don't mind Carlton. Don't mind it at all.

All this beer talk is no good for ol' FD. I'm 12 days into a grog-free thingo and I've got after-tute drinks tonight at the uni pub. Am meant to be just sipping cola but... urge to sink piss... rising...

AUSTRALIA'S TOP 10 BEERS(by volume share)
XXXX Gold 12.4 per cent
VB 12.3 per cent
Carlton Draught 9.3 per cent
Tooheys New 7.1 per cent
Tooheys Extra Dry 4.4 per cent
Carlton Mid 3.8 per cent
Carlton Dry 3.3 per cent
Corona Extra 3.1 per cent
Pure Blonde 2.6 per cent
Hahn Premium Light 2.5 per cent

You know, I could just be making this up but I'm sure VB's market share was up around 22% less than 5-7 years ago. If true, that means cider, micro-brews and the broader range of beers offered by brewers has absolutely eaten VB's dominance.

I quite like VB. Only on tap however. I find it very pleasant to drink at a pub and will often be my first choice. Only ever had XXXX Gold once, when I was umpiring the inter-college cricket competition (a fairly relaxed umpiring standard required, obviously) and it was very enjoyable to drink in the sun.

Is that the one in the black label? If so I've only had it twice, and once was on a tab so I had a decent amount of it. Not as good as Gold, but still a step up from VB and Carlton. Might be more expensive because it cops more tax due to being 1.6 standard drinks from memory.

Interesting that Carlton beers combined sell the most. Can't understand why people would willingly drink the stuff.

Unless you're driving there's no excuses

Nah, the Red comes in red slabs, the bottles have red labels, etc.

Was the first beer I really got into, tbh. Haven't had it in a long time but I'd imagine it'd still go down alright.

'Oi, Jacko, who kicked the most goals in the 1990 AFL Premiership season?'

Does alcohol harming the past three years of my life count as an excuse?

;)

Haven't seen them then.

It was one of the first beers I got into as well after Corona's like all 15-16 year olds. Went to a place where the only options for jugs were Carlton and the more expensive Pure Blonde which I hate almost as much. It was torturous :(

No. Harden the **** up :p;)

Carlton Draught, Dry and Cold all smash them in my opinion.
