How's your mate going?So... One of my good friends (Herbert L Festidium) has just been appointed as curator of the Bayeux Cathedral in Normandy, France. No doubt many of you would be familiar with the 'Bayeux Tapestry', which was commissioned in the 11th century to celebrate the succesful Norman invasion of England - and which remains on display in Bayeux to this day. Indeed, I imagine each of you has spent countless hours poring over enhanced images of this wondrous work, debating the meaning and merits of this unique creation with your fellow Bay 13 historians.
What you would not know, nor I until barely an hour ago, was that a litany of other tapestries were produced by the same artisans who produced the Bayeux piece. These are kept under the tightest security in the Western-most mausoleum of the cathedral, with access granted to only a select few. As curator of the cathedral, Herb obviously has access to these tapestries. And after inspecting them thoroughly last night, he stumbled across a good number of works which appear to have curious relevance to Australia's indigenous football code. Baffled by this, given the enormous geographical and temporal distance between present-day Aussie Rules and 11th century France, Herb has sportingly agreed to fax me copies of some of these strange works.
In the interest of feeding the insatiable Bay 13 appetite for Norman art, I'll post some of them here for your perusal...
