Yogi Berra RIP

To be honest I didn't even know he was alive! He had assumed mythical proportions as a historical sporting figure.

Baseball legend Yogi Berra dies

Yogi Berra's greatest quotes

  • It's like deja-vu all over again
  • It ain't the heat; it's the humility
  • Baseball is 90% mental - the other half is physical
  • I never said most of the things I said... Take it with a grin of salt
  • If you don't know where you're going, you might end up some place else
  • He hits from both sides of the plate. He's amphibious
  • You can observe a lot by watching
  • The future ain't what it used to be
  • Never answer an anonymous letter
  • When you come to a fork in the road, take it
  • I always thought that record would stand until it was broken
  • If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be
  • Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't go to yours

19 years of career. 15 times All Star. 13 World Series titles (3 of them as a coach). A true sporting legend. RIP Yogi

He played in New York in a time when it was the very center of baseball. From 47 to 58, a New York team made to the WS every single time, with the exception of 48. Not long after that, the Giants and the Dodgers left NY, which is a shame - the Brooklyn Dodgers being the subject of one of the best sports books I've ever read, The Boys of Summer.

It's over - Vale Yogi Berra - but it ain't over for your many quotes.

His record is the greatest of all the great Yankees players. He was a great player before he was a great character.

Before I spent a year living in North America, I knew about Yogi Berra the 10 time championship winner for the New York Yankees, but I never knew much about the character of Yogi. That year in Canada and USA watching 24 hour cable sports channel and other TV I got to see so much of the man in interviews and stories about him that I fell in love with the little bloke. It wasnt just his managaled language it was the Record plus the character of the bloke and the things he did that made him a true national treasure. To this day I still keep an article from The Weekend Australian 30 September 1989 - the weekend that Yogi last was involved in Major League Baseball and was going to retire after 44 seasons. The Article is title - The master of malapropisms says its over. It has many of the quotes Ford posted but many others.

Yogi Berra’s fork in the road really did exist, in Montclair, where he lived for more than half a century.
