Would love to know peoples thoughts on who out of young guys.is there most improved young gun for me T Hunt love hes work so far

Yeah THunt has been terrific. Definately his best season so far. He has always shown glimpses - a game here and there he has been very good but he somehow lost that form. Sometimes thru injury. But this season he has had 4 really good games from 4. Definately worthy of a mention.

I reckon Bundy has been been as good as anyone of the young guns coming thru. Not maybe as consistent as THunt but what he does can really hurt other sides. One of the best inside the centre square for me. Getting better and just needs a good run with injuries. Porbably ahead of Duncan this year - which surprises me.

Motlop. Has added really good run and leg speed to our side. Hit the scoreboard and is looking more composed and comfortable at AFL level. Still reckon he needs another 10-20 games to get a bit more composure and make more better decisions. But better than last year already. Links up well with Stokes, Bundy, THunt and Selwood. Is behind both THunt and Bundy in games so not quite to thier standard yet.

Blicavs. Been serviceable as a back up ruckman - and thank goodness he is has been able to do that. Quite a story. Really should be way out of his league but done enough. He may yet be a great story. GFC, unlike GCFC and WSFC - we could get the elite non Aussie rules sportsperson and make them a real player. I like to think that he could, in time, become a player. Still 2-3 years away if this happens.

Murdoch. Really giving it a red hot go. Not just quite up to it yet IMO. Yes has a heap of pressure acts and adds speed to our side - but he needs to get the ball more often and have a few more tackles to go past anyone currently in the team. He will be encouraged by the Ctas giving him senior game time and will know a run of good form in the VFL will see him get more senior game time.

Smedts. We see patches of really good smart footy stuff from Billie - but just not enough. His body seems like it could do with another preseason to me. Injuries have slowed his progress but I think with patience and some more senior game time Billie will be a good player in 2014. Will get game time and will be a sub on occasion. Quite tall and quick - and a likely player to watch in the future.

Caddy. Has the right mind set - a big body and you can see potential in him as a very good inside mid who can take a mark. Not quick but not slow. GFC saw something in him and we recruit players for their footy skills and what they have above the shoulders. Could be a strong minded person and determined to be the best he can - and wants to dominate. Driven players well coached and tutored can become really good team players - and Caddy could become this player. I did not se enough of him at GC and so far he has not done a lot at the Cattery. But GFC is playing him at every opportunity and so they see something in the kid - and this adds to my suspicion he will make it. He is in competition with GHS for a spot in the midfield. It makes sense to expect a lot more of him after a season with the Cats, after 40 senior games experience and another good pre-season. 2014 onwards I think will see him far more influential than now.

GHS. Well he had a very good year by all acounts in the VFL last season - BOG in a winnig GF side. Then has a good NAB Cup and finally gets a full senior game with injury opening up a spot for him. And he plays a blinder. Just have not seen enough of the guy and he has under 10 senior games experience. This tells me it is too much to expect him to be a consistently good mid for us all season. Very few players have done that. But there is so much hype around the guy - a level headed potential leader already apparently.

So GHS is behind all of the younger guys at this stage as he has not had enough senior game time to show us if he can influence a game as much as Bundy, THunt or a Motlop. But for some reason I get this feeling he could be a player, better than most, in his first real senior year. Chrystal ball stuff really.

Yeah so for me it is -

1. THunt
2. Bundy
3. Motlop.

But not much between them. And I expect Bundy by the end of the year to be number 1. But if all keep playing as now, and even improve a bit, we have some good games to come. Love the leg speed of these guys as well.

One of the best things about footy is watching the new guys come through and adding something different to the team. Even when your team is down you can always enjoy a kid giving it his best and showing his future potential.

Right now it's an absolute pleasure watching our young fellas run around winning games for us, it's not just the old boys. I don't expect them to last all season so I don't have high expectations for us, but it's great fun now and I'm going to enjoy it.

I just wish we had Menzel, he was my favourite and he had it all. :(

Just wish we had a young tall in amongst the young group, someone like a Jake Carlisle, I know we've got Blicavs but at the moment he's just a fill in ruckman.
The midfield mediums look ok for the future, but a key sized defender coming through we have none, given a lot of key forwards are now around 200cms.
We need a gorilla to man up on the Gorillas as they say.

Most improved... Would have to be Blicavs, after all he cam from a base line of pretty much 0. THough Jon Douglas is right in saying maybe 2-3 years from really being a player.
Who impresses the most? Poodle without a doubt. Bundy is good for periods of a game but not the full 4 quarters and Motlop the same but T Hunt is running out the game in style.
GHS has had too limited exposure to really show his stuff (except last week:)), will be interested to see how he grows across this year. I don't expect miracles from him but a continuation of the real growth he showed in the VFL last year.
IMO Duncan is underperforming a bit and will need to lift.
Caddy and Smedts both need more time in the first, they are currently showing flashes of brilliance then nothing. Look for a solid years growth from both
Murdoch is a genuine star of the future but not really up to it in the firsts yet. Look for a good season in the VFL with occasional reward for performance by maybe getting back into the 1sts late in the season.

must be man love but i just love watching poodle.cant waite to watch him again tonight hard nut.

Nathan Vardy.

Motlop for mine. Has substantially increased his output from last year.

Probably in output your correct. At times last night he was such an important player. He contributes what few others could.
He seems to have gone from a fringe player to key member of the side. Pre season there were sides without him in it. Doubt anyone would leave him out now.

From where he has come , Ballroom would be my pick
.

Someone, we need a list of Geelong players and their nicknames. Showing a degree of ignorance here, but who is "Ballroom" and why?

Mark "Ballroom Blitz" Blicavs

Straining the memory bank but think there is a thread on players nicknames on here somewhere

edit: Found it

Probably showing my age when I first used it.

Whether I alone named him or others as well I have no idea but in this thread when I did a review of the players , I mentioned the little dance he did V North on the HFF that game. Who know's it may stick.

Smedts reminds me a bit of Enright at the same stage. He makes some stupid mistakes but it seems he is learning from them

Murdoch reminds me of Jared Rooke at the same point in their careers. Maybe he just needs to change his name to 'Max Murdoch' and that will make all the difference

Smedts doesn't remind me of Enright at the same or any other age.
Murdoch doesn't remind me of Max Rooke.
Nor does he remind me of Jared Rooke at the same age.
But I am not the Official Keeper of Your Memories.:D

So many KPP's that could be good for us in the VFL atm... Hamling, Kersten, Brown although not in form and yet only a few spots. Few vultures would be hanging around KP this year

Think about the end of season situation. We must have 4 ND draft selections so 4 players must retire or be delisted. Now I reckon Corey may retire and Sherringham (injured today so sorry for writing this today) maybe the most likely to be delisted.

If Simpson cannot get up after two serious back operations - I fear for his contract.

We have to upgrade Walker and Eardley needs to be upgraded so we can keep him (doing very nicely). But only one Rookie upgrade counts a ND draft pick. Then we have Burbury who must be upgraded or delisted.

It is tight my friend - so the vultures will know we have some hard choices coming up and they may get some cheap meat just yet.

Gotta ask for something back though, like Dangerfield for Kersten lol. You reckon they'd take it with Tex down lol?

I thought his influence against the Swans was the equal as those 3 in the same game. 23 possessions and negated Kennedy's influence is non to shabby to say the least. But he isn't as consistent at this stage but given time (2014 onwards) I think he could be up near those 3.

Before the NAB Cup I didn't think Blicavs would play, certainly not until much later in the year, if at all. So that has to be huge. Of course injuries have played their part but he has shown a bit.

Motlop has increased his output. Clearly fitter and a bit stronger his year and his decision making has improved. He has been doing a lot more hard running this year which is great to see. Always knew he had it in him but just wasn't certain when he would make such a big step. Glad it's this year, especially with Varcoe's latest injury.

Bundy has improved and become more consistent but to be honest I kinda expected it. I really felt he was held back by the niggling injuries he had last year. No that he is over them he's showing what he can do.

Hunt has taken another step which I hoped he would. He did have to learn a new role of being a tagger last year which would have been difficult at times. But it's reaping it's rewards now. Another preaseaon and an extra 20 odd games do add up for younger players.

It's hard to judge Caddy up to this point. Been the sub twice, been subbed out once and then concussed last night. Plus he is still probably getting used to our structures a bit compared to someone like GHS who has been drilled in them since he was drafted. But he has shown enough to say he should be a good player for us in the future. Same goes for Smedts, Guthrie and Murdoch. Consistency is their biggest issue at this point.

We only have to use 3 draft picks in the ND. It all comes down to where the footy department feel where our list is at and how strong Wells feels the draft is. Walker, Burbury and Bathie are in their final year as rookies and have to be promoted or delisted. Bathie is gone by the looks of it. Burbury has to overcome is foot injury first but I was hoping he would get a run for a game or two this year to show what he could do. Walker seems likely to be promoted. But yes the worry is that other teams will come knocking for the likes of Eardley and possibly even Blicavs I think. With Sheringham's injury, if like Varcoe's is a 12 week one, would be hard for him to be promoted this year so he possibly will be kept as a rookie. But seeing how we will have 2 rookie spots available this year at least, and some guys who seem to be rated by the club on long term injuries like McCarthy, Cowan, etc it's possible we could take them off our senior list and offer them a spot on our rookie list. Definitely a juggling act for the list management side of things, keeping all our young talent. But a good problem to have. The biggest issue possibly is we may not get anything in return for most of these young players if any do leave. I'm not sure we have had so many rookies worthy of promotion at one time and so many others trying to shrug off long term injuries as well. This coming off-season could be a big one for the club long term.

Motlop & Hunt have shown the most improvement this year.
Smedts is slowly doing more and more by the week.
Duncan has been pretty much class since day one.

I stand by my 2011 claim that Bundy will win a brownlow one day :thumbsu:
