Occupation: Senior Business Analyst

Industry: Retail

Salary: $70k + Super

Hours: 40

Qualifications: None for me, just worked my way there. This has changed. They are pretty much after a finance or accounting degree now.

Earning potential: In current job probably $85k, but could go into a buying position that would start at $120k and up to about $200k. It is possible to get one of these jobs as there are plenty of them and I know the job but I have no interest in it. I have no kids, so what i make is plenty for me and I'm not career orientated or ambitious at all. I don't want a stressful job.

Last but not least we are going thru a restructure right now. I'm praying for a payout. I worked out I'll get nearly 12 months pay, so the thought of it is very attractive. Also know I won't have trouble finding a job as the market is good. I know they'll keep me though, just to spoil my dream.

Age: 20
Job: Cadet Journalist
Wage: $31,000 a year
Education: Three years @ Uni.
Holidays: 6 weeks 3 days annual leave. No public holidays.
Work Days: 5 days a week, 9:00 til 5:00.
Earning potential: All relative. I work for News Lmtd as a cadet at a community paper. Within ten years I should be at the Herald Sun and depending on who you are, you could be over $100,000.

It's a very relaxed job. Going to accidents where you see death sucks but it's part of it. Money doesn't mean much when you're happy with what you do.

Was it hard to get into News Ltd? Because when I'm older, I want to be a sports journo. When did you start uni? Or haven't you finished the 3 years?

I started uni in 2005 and finished at the end of 2007. I'm thinking about sports as well, it just means I can't play anymore though. Luckily my job has alot to do with the Geelong FC so there are plenty of contacts and possibilities.

News Lmtd is pretty difficult to get into at times. From what I've gathered there were about 100 applicants for my job, 12 people picked for interviews and three people got jobs.

The best way to get in is do your uni internship or any work at a News Lmtd community paper. That means you become familiar to the editor and everyone in the office and they can gauge how good you are. Pat would be little to nothing, but when you're studying, you can do a couple of freelance articles and it gets your name out there and people start knowing you.

Customer Service representative for Telstra
$35,000 + bonuses & incentives
No qualifications
Hours 8.30 - 5.15 Mon-Fri .. one Saturday a month (get one day off during the week)
Earning potential .. Can get myself into a management position which would be between 80,000 - 100,000 .. long way to go there though.

Bottleshop manager

$40,000 plus freebies

No Qualifications, but product knowledge essential

Shift work, Weekend work, holiday work-the hours suck.

Earning potential- I'm just about there, but the position is flexible for study etc.

School teacher.

Currently on $60,000 per year. Potential to earn over $100,000 if I wanted to work my way up to principal but it doesn't really appeal to me.

Also if the bastard government does the right thing hopefully will have a pay increase soon. Victoria pays teachers a pittance. I worked in the Northern Territory for a couple of years and was on $10,000 a year more with a rent subsidy on top.

Oh diddums! You're still on holidays ey? Poor you! :(;)

You're a teacher, you get what ... 14 weeks off a year? Yet $60,000 isn't enough?

You should be grateful you get that much doe when you're only working 75% of the year.

Yeah we get a lot of holidays but most teachers work damn hard for them. I usually spend 10 hours a day at school, usually without a break and then do some work at home in the evenings. Also a lot of the holidays we spend planning for the next term.

Cry me a river! I'm on 10 hrs a day at the moment as well, it's bloody busy! And I have to work saturdays sometimes!

My mate's a property manager, has an 8am appointment to start, then a 8pm appointment to finish a lot of the time. Not to mention doing opens & whatnot on weekends.

Got another mate that works at woolies as duty manager doing 50+ hours a week including weekends.

All this and we're getting the normal 4 weeks annual leave and you're getting 14 weeks and still aren't happy! Not to mention don't you get long service leave pretty early on? Some old bloke I know took an ENTIRE year off teaching - all paid. What a crock of shit!

Oh and don't give me this "you don't get a break" crap. Recess? Lunch? Change of lessons? I bet you're on yard duty every now and then, that's a fair break!

Can't believe teachers and how much they complain. :thumbsd:

Group Manager/Buyer in the FMCG industry.
$85800
Company car/Car allowance
Phone
Never @ home so most of the my meals are paid for and being single I can't really cook, most of my beverages go onto a credit card so the opportunity to save is enormous.
Lots of benefits like interstate trips, long lunches, corporate events eg AFL GF each year.
I Don't get public holidays, the workload can be very demanding and most weeks are 50 plus hours and the phone doesn't stop from about 8.30am.
Great company and great people to work with!
I am 3 years from Long service, at that time I will assess my career and probably go to the UK for 12 months and come back all refreshed to set up my own company.

Firstly, I didn't say I wasn't happy. I love my job and would it for nicks. However, the truth is most teachers have to spend at least five years at university(I spent six). Compared to other professions that require that long at university(medicine, law etc) the pay is poor. Recess and lunch I spend marking work, lesson plans, general classroom maintenance. I am a primary teacher and so don't have lesson changes as such.

My nephew left school in yr 9 and currently has a job as a Telstra customer service representative. With all the bonuses he gets he is on more than me.

Go find me someone in medicine that gets 14 weeks a year off. They may have spent the same time at uni as you but their work is far more important and they work harder, longer hours than teachers.

Primary teacher, gawd that can't be too difficult. I'm sorry but when I was at school, at recess and lunch the vast majority would be either in the staff room laughing and drinking coffee or on yard duty. You're not on your feet ALL day in the classroom are you? Surely a lot of the time you just give them sheets or whatever, they work quietly and you just sit at your desk? That's a great opportunity to get marking done!

fact is that teachers are underpaid.

Give me $60k with 14-16 weeks off a year anyday.

Without education you wouldn't have doctors.

Don't know what school you went to but I've never seen that at any of the schools I've worked at.

I usually have a group that I work with or else I'm going around giving assistance. I never sit at my desk except for during recess and lunch time when I'm working and after school when doing my admin stuff.

You've obviously been working a few years longer than myself. I think with my next progression i head to about 52K or something like that... Wouldn't want to be a Principal for all the money in the world. Absolute **** of a job.

I won't lie the holidays are awesome, but yes people have no idea of the amount of preparation that goes on behind the scenes, everyone thinks you rock up at 9 and leave at 3:30.

Age: 22
Job: Sports Journalist
Wage: $45,000 a year
Education: Bachelor of Communication in journalism and PR. A complete waste of time and money.
Holidays: 6 weeks 3 days annual leave. No public holidays.
Work Days: Five days a week. Monday and Saturday are my two days off.
Earning potential: **** all, it's journalism. But there are perks, such as attending the Brownlow and getting blind, the GF breakfast and being paid to be at the grand final. It outweights the crap pay and dealing with a public that despises you if you write a bad word about their team. But there is a good chance I will eventually sell my soul and move to the dark side.

The pay and conditions are fantastic which is why it shits me to tears how greedy teachers are. Just because I (and probably 99% of the world) think that teachers holidays are very good, doesn't mean I want to be one

Who would want to be a teacher anyway? Dealing with little Corey Delaney's all day. :thumbsd:
